Noticeable snubs for Spielberg and Hooper in Best Director. Perhaps the buzz for Lincoln has calmed down a bit over the last few months, and it is no longer the overwhelming favorite? And Hooper has no business being in the category this year anyway. (Or the year he won the Oscar.)

The BAFTAs and Oscars align about 2/3 of the time, so I don't expect a "snub" for Spielberg when they announce nominations tomorrow. He's a frontrunner (as is Bigelow). I don't think Hooper has strong enough opinions this year to put him in the top 5 for an Oscar, so I expect him to be missing from the list.

Interesting about Ben Affleck for Best Actor. The director nod is expected, but Actor? I wonder if that will be repeated tomorrow. It's a tight category, which means that some surprises can sneak in when the voting is close.

I'm confounded by all the love for Alan Arkin in Argo, as well as by the inclusion of Christoph Waltz in the supporting category for what is clearly a lead role.

Ben Affleck was sleepwalking through that film. And since Riva was nominated for Amour, that spot was easily open for Jean-Louis Trintignant. Mirren also got nominated. Shame Rachel Weisz and The Deep Blue Sea got ignored.

First of all, thank you BAFTA's for not recognizing Denzel's overrated performance in "Flight." I sat through that film with my mouth wide open at how nothing he and that film are. However, that being said, Helen Mirren? Really? No "Silver Linings Playbook?" These are a shame.

What is with all of the animosity towards Hooper? Did he kill your kittens or something? The man is talented and puts together a good film. He deserved his win for "The Kings Speech" over the trite and overly praised "The Social Network" and I think what he did with "Les Mis" (though not my favorite film) is definitely worthy of a nomination ... not a win, but at least a nomination.

Waltz over DiCaprio for Best Supporting Actor in "Django Unchained"? Ugh, he's becoming one of those actors who gets easily praised for not much. Glad to see all of the "Argo" love' I'm surprised to see a Best Actor nod for Ben Affleck .

I wish 'Wreck it Ralph' was nominated for Best Animated Film. I'm not surprised to see 'Lincoln' get so many nominations. I saw it on Monday and really enjoyed it. It's also nice to see Judi Dench get recognized.

I'm just so happy that Bradley Cooper is getting nominated for pretty much every award there is this year. It was the best performance by ANYONE I saw all year and I am really praying he gets nominated tomorrow.

Naomi Watts' stunning work once again gets snubbed over something like Helen Mirren's serviceable, if entirely expected, performance in HITCHCOCK, absurd.
Spielberg will get in at the Oscars, there's no doubt, however I do think this puts Affleck ahead in the race to win the actual award. So happy to see him cited for Lead Actor, I think he makes it look effortless but it's a very subtle performance that makes complete sense in how "unshowy" it is, considering he is playing a spy. Sad to see David O'Russell miss out.

I think there's exactly a 0% chance of Cooper not being nominated. I think the sure-things in the Actor category are Cooper, Day-Lewis and Jackman.

I don't know about a win. Everyone seems to think Day-Lewis is a shoo-in. I don't necessarily subscribe to that point of view. I think the Academy may be shy about giving him his third statue, opening up for someone else to come in and grab it. I'm just afraid that the person who could do that might be Jackman.

Is it enough merely to have tackled a hugely complex film with a massive budget and a cast of thousands? Or does one have to have, in the end, created a truly great film in order to be nominated for the Oscar?

In my opinion, the final product matters, and Hooper did not make a 'Best-Picture' candidate.

In a similar vein, for Jackman to win over DDL would, to me, be a grave injustice.

Hooper's already got one grossly undeserved Oscar, for that snoozefest THE KING'S SPEECH. His direction of LES MISERABLES is laughably bad -- even Ed Wood would have demanded retakes from Russell Crowe.

Gary Oldman did a low-key performance so much better in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. In fact, Hardy, Hurt, Firth, and Mark Strong all did low-key performances as spies that were much better than that. It just seemed like he was forced to star in this project against his own wishes rather than an actual Latino actor in the role.

I'm happy for the Argo and Les Miserables love, but in an ideal world Leonardo DiCaprio would have been nominated. However, I thought John Goodman was almost better than Arkin in Argo. I also am LOVING the nominations for Anna Karenina - if only Keira Knightly could squeeze in there...

How was Dench in Skyfall? I thought she was brilliant in Marigold Hotel...

I completely agree about Goodman. Not to take anything away from Arkin, but I thought Goodman was superb and am shocked to find him getting passed over for Arkin.

I actually this is a rich year in the supporting categories. Many fine performances out there that will likely be forgotten.

Again, Arkin is just playing a cranky old man with a heart of gold. Instead of being a debauched grandpa, this time he's a sidelined movie man. Same schtick.

I think Anna Karenina absolutely deserves technical nods. But I think that's all it merits. I found it too cold and relied too much on artifice.

The problem with Anna Karenina somewhat was what I had issues with the novel (which I have playfully referred to as Levin since that was the story I was invested in) in the Anna-Vronsky that was further amplified by the miscasting of Aaron Johnson as Vronsky. Not only a bit of jerk but a too big for his britches, too young kind of a jerk. Jude Law gave a great performance though that has gotten lost in the shuffle.

Honestly, Joe Wright is more than capable of bringing life to his technically-driven direction be it high-brow Atonement or cheekily low-brow Hanna.
