Well, charisma is like beauty. Not everybody responds to any performer the same way. The first time I saw Sandra Bernhard live, circa 1983, she did a funny bit about "Madonna, beautiful Madonna, she's so beautiful. At least the media keeps telling us she is." And it's true, there was entertainment industrial machinery contributing to the Madonna phenomenon, the same machinery that grinds on and expands geometrically to make a Beyonce happen today.

Beyonce has something a lot of people respond to, so does Madonna. But there is nothing inherently more charismatic about one over the other in my opinion. Beyonce is just a sort of later iteration of the Madonna template. I cringe when I read quotes from her when she talks about her "brand," using the same language as Snooki, of all people. But it's really no different than the way Madonna constantly works it, to keep the machinery going, to keep the millions floating in and out.

i think "charisma" is too vague a term to describe what's going on with these women, sorry, "brands" today. At another time, in another place, I bet even Madonna might consider it reductive.

I remember almost every single thing about it, including wondering why there were so many pairs of masculine-looking women there. She had a pianist who was named Brian who was onstage before her, but she opened with an acapella version of the Burt Bachrach medley... replete with the occasional breath in the middle of a word. It was that funny mix she had at the beginning of her career where she was simultaneously an amateur singer and making fun of amateur singers. The medley was long, Brian just sat there, the place went crazy at the end. She thanked the audience, introduced Brian, and then berated him for not playing and leaving her hanging there in the medley. And we were off...

Namo I saw her around 83 as well. It was somewhere in the West Village. I don't remember where. She became a neighbor of mine in Valley Village years later. She only lived in her house for about a year and then she rented it. It was around the time she was working on Roseanne. I did not know it was her till she hosted a neighborhood garage sale. She made me tongue tied.

I tried watching it too...but part way in switched it off...I love her music and I think she is a great entertainer but the documentary really wasn't very well done or necessary.

I got home late last night and there was another Beyonce interview on one of those entertainment -extra whatever shows. Seriously..... I have had enough Beyonce. Maybe a low profile till the tour comes out will serve her well? Overexposure might be the nail.

I'd never given much thought to Beyonce until I started reading all of theaternut's posts about her, so I checked her out.

SHE'S AMAZING! Lip synched or no, that national anthem was awesome! And I wouldn't have known about the documentary, so thanks to theaternut for turning me on to that, too! I invited some friends over, and we're all die-hard Beyonce fans now!
