A good, smart review from Salon.com

"It's a movie that succeeds, often beautifully, not by forcing its characters to be as naughty and gross and pathetic as men are. It soars by letting them be as naughty and gross and pathetic as women are. Three cheers for equality."
I like that. :)
And I can't wait to see it this weekend.

Mr.Midwest, thought you might like this good news:
Early projections based on pre-sales and strong matinees place Universal's Judd Apatow-bannered comedy Bridesmaids big at the box office this weekend. One of the few R-rated female-targeted laffer (underperforming The Sweetest Thing was another), it's looking to open to a $20 million weekend and a Friday gross of $7.5M. Of course, these are still very preliminary numbers. But they follow weeks of decent tracking that popped dramatically going into this weekend, especially in the' unaided awareness' category. The expected gross is especially impressive because the movie lacks big name stars (Saturday Night Live regular Kristen Wiig leads a cast of TV actresses), had a trailer that was redone when it was deemed not funny enough, and is releasing into a middling but by no means giant number of North American theaters (2,91
.
Good News for Bridesmaids

Witty, funny, too gross, too long, and great chemistry among the cast.
And Jill Clayburgh plays Kristen's mother, in what is prob her last performance. And the film does not pay tribute to her over end credits. Shame.
You will learn one important lesson from this film: if you want to date a cute cop, never fix your rear tail lights. :)

Posted: 5/14/11 at 12:56amI liked it. My favorite gag involved the C word.

I have to say I have soft spot for the C word, I just think it can make for some of the best jokes (and I apologize for who I offense, I consider myself a feminist but I still think it makes for really funny exchanges if used in a smart way).
PRS, how was Rose Byrne? I know you're also a fan of DAMAGES, was curious how she was in this since the roles are SO different.
BRIDESMAIDS..a triumph for vomit and feminism#12
Posted: 5/14/11 at 12:17pmI liked her. Her character was drawn in pretty broad strokes, but she's funny and made a good foil for Kristen Wiig.

I saw it last night. I would give it 4.5/5. It was about a half hour too long, a problem that could have been solved by cutting some of the long-running gags in half. I would have had more of a problem with this aspect of the movie if the gags weren't so damn funny.
The casting was excellent, though I wish Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper had more to do. But Kristen Wiig and Rose Byrne were hysterical. My one qualm with their relationship was that *SPOILER ALERT* I wish Annie had slapped the **** out of Helen. It would have been a great payoff for Annie's character. **/SPOILER**

Saw it last nite and loved it even more than I thought I would. I don't like bathroom humor, and this didn't have as much as I thought it would. The best friend story line is sweet and Kristin's character is actually fully developed.
@ Phyllis- I loved the "c" word bit. Did not see that coming and I died laughing!

Looks like the movie is at #2 with 24.4 Million. Nice take.
I also agree the film was way too long. I like that Wiig steered clear of using too many of her SNL mannerisms and inhabited the character of Annie and gave her some real depth. I think the acting chops of Maya Rudolph helped Kristen get a bit deeper.
However, I think the film kinda belongs to Melissa McCarthy, giving a pretty fearless performance as Meghan and gives the movie much of its tender heart at the end.
I was pleased that the gross out stuff was not taken as far as I thought they would and was done to the point of really funny but not overkill.
SPOILERS++++
The best moment for me was Kristen and Rose in the car trying to get Rhodes attention. Classic Wiig pulling out all the stops.
I think the film was really well done and the running time was lengthened by the "bits" that were really given time to develop like the engagement party speeches and the entire airplane saga.
A nice diversion for a Saturday afternoon.

I can't remember the last time I laughed harder at a movie. This makes THE HANGOVER look like a limp, repetitive romp about dull-witted homophobes!
Yeah, the direction is sloppy and its overlong, but its flaws are also its strengths. If Paul Feig doesn't quite have a sense of rhythm, he certainly has an almost Altman-esque way with the actors...even the bit players perform their parts with pride and gusto (I loved the teenage girl in the jewelry store).
Catching the trailer on Youtube is interesting as nearly all of the scenes in it are alternates...this is one DVD that is going to be loaded with extras.

Borstal-I totally agree with you. I was so PLEASED to discover that the best bits were NOT in the trailer, so you weren't seeing re-hash on the screen. Brilliant marketing!
Best line ever by Maya Rudolph.

I just got back and loved it. My favorite line was at the very end and I swear I was crying I laughed so hard and was laughing for a half hour after

Saw it today and really liked it.
It may sound odd, but I thought it was far more character driven then I expected. I found Wiig great and believable in her downward spiral, and Rose Byrne petty prettiness all too familiar (in a good way).
I have been to enough showers, weddings and the like to witness a lot of what was shown in real life (in far muted tones).
And Clayburgh as the mom just added icing to the cake.
A little long, but all in all, well done!
