Darrins could come and go; the heart and soul of that show was Elizabeth Montgomery's Samantha.
I can't imagine anyone with a fraction of the grace, beauty, and wit that she brought to even the silliest of episodes. (Can you tell she was my first TV crush?)
I understand the impulse to reinterpret things for a new generation. But I can't say I hold out high hopes.

Anyone remember TABITHA?

Melissa Joan Hart probably never wants to play another witch.
I've seen the whole Tabitha series. Whenever I catch it I just marvel at how good looking Robert Urich was and how sad it is that he's gone

Ooh, Jennifer Aniston would be great!
Perhaps Tabitha could be the lead character in this new version, and Erin Murphy could reprise her role. Unlikely, but I for one would watch.

I don't think Jennifer Aniston is right for Samantha. She's too light in her energy. For example, when Elizabeth Montgomery would confront Agnes Moorehead "You turn Darin back right now" you knew she meant it. Aniston can't pull that level of heaviness off.
If you've ever studied Laban, Aniston is a Float and isn't able to use one of the heavier energy shapes in a way that is believable.

I think I might know what you mean, Goth.
Montgomery never played the jokes; as ridiculous as the situations were, she always seemed to be taking them seriously--and was funny in the process.
I would argue that Aniston--though a very different actor--did a similar thing on "Friends." I've come to admire her performance the most. Rachel was going through real stuff in that series, and Aniston took it seriously--and was funny in the process.

But Montgomery had a gravitas that I've never seen anyone else bring to a sitcom (and a silly one at that). It shouldn't have been funny, but it was.
Maybe that's what helped us buy all the supernatural stuff. And maybe its lack in "I Dream of Jeannie" is why I preferred "Bewitched."

Posted: 8/10/11 at 1:23pmI've always been on the fence about Bewitched. I loved the cast, but I never cared for the stories or the writing. I found the array of peripheral characters the most interesting aspect of the show.

Reg, I do have to agree with you and you've expressed it very well. Elizabeth Montgomery took the situations seriously and no matter how whacky the story got, we the audience always believed her.
I've seen Jennifer Aniston in several roles and while I think she is talented, I think she's limited as an actress. I don't think she could distinguish between Samantha and Serena as well as Elizabeth Montgomery did.

I am sorta rooting for Up All Night to be good but Christina Applegate would be at the top of my list of choices for Samantha.
The Kelly Bishop as Endora choice is inspired. For some reason, Lisa Kudrow came to mind for Endora. I guess everybody has a Friends cast member in mind! :) Jessica Walters (screw her TV Land show, she needs to return to network TV) would also be great.
I could see Eric McCormack as Darrin. In another universe, Ty Burrell would have been a great choice.

They shot a pilot back in 2004 for a partial remake, or at least a series heavily inspired by Bewitched. In this version however, the witch was the man, played by dave annable and the witch was a woman who worked for the mayor and wanted a career in politics. In the end of the pilot (I don't think it was ever broadcast but I have a copy of the script) the witch agrees to give up magic, like samantha, to be with the girl.
Oh and best of all, his disapproving mother? Played by none other than Christine Baranski!
