Posted: 11/17/06 at 10:07amAmen, Hannah. I usually avoid this thread at all costs even though I am a soprano at a conservatory majoring in Vocal Performance because I strongly disagree with half of the things people write... I just had to say THANK YOU for saying that.

Posted: 11/17/06 at 10:37pmwell, of course i wont study the enitr thing over night...to learn the aria properly is somehting thatlll take TIME and patience and will require many many repetitions of each tiny little section in order to do correctly...but I pretty much trust my teacher. Most teachers wouldnt feel comfotable to give a young singer difficult pieces because they lack the capability to teach it or for fear, etc. alot of teachers out there DONT know what theyre doing..Ive experienced it. Luckily I found one whose got a good head on her shoulders. She is after all, a juilliard grad and above all went to AVA in Philadelphia, arguably one of the best vocal schools in the world. Shes also taught there so if she says I can do it I know shes not lying to me. And above all she kNOWS the proper technique..without it she wouldnt be a porfessional . heck, shes sung in Europe for decades with placido, pavarotti, Scotto, etc. She knows whats shes doing so i have no fears.

So I've got a studio recital coming up on Monday! I take lessons at school, and so the college requires that we have a studio recital at least once a semester to showcase our progress, and I'm singing Schubert's "Heidenroslein," Faure's "En Priere," and Weill's (forgive my spelling) "Barbara Song." Can we say pumped?
Yes we can!

good luck clumsy! I love studio recitals, their so intmiate and relaxed. Heidenroslein's such a fun song too!
bwaywatchout- I'm only speaking from my own experiences, but i'm sure there are many out there who teach differently. Have you ever heard the 1994 Solti, Gheorghiu version of Traviata? it's wonderful if you're looking for a good recording of it.

I'm so glad to hear it!
After a recital is always the worst for me. No matter what I never feel lke did well enough. It takes about a day for me to really look back and judge how I did.

I agree...hmmmmm why not start a topic!! i'll start!!
Name your favorite soprano
The new voice for me is Anna netrebko. She has a powerful, beautiful, yet flexible voice. She's also not to mention a wonderful actress. Her violetta perofrmance was phenomenal at the MET.
My favorite singer from the past must be Joan Sutherland. TRuly amazing technique and control. I findher Lakme Bell song performance one of the most enthralling I've ever seen.
Dessay and Jo are also quite talented.

Uhh, bwaywatchout, Netrebko never did Violetta at the Met, that was Angela Gheorghiu. Who was phenomenal. Netrebko did it in Salzburg.
Oh god, Anna Netrebko is NOT to my taste. I feel like she has no prescence, lovely voice, but no real extra something.
My favorite nowadays soprano is hands down the one and only Angela Gheorghiu. Opera's most tempermental and passionate diva, and with as close a voice to perfect as you can get. The emotion that she puts into all her characters, even in a recital is astounding. She's a very interesting person as well. She can do pianissimo at higher notes than I've ever heard. Her puccini album that came out last year is a perfect exapmle of her artistry, and I would recommend her DVD of Traviata with Solti in 1994 to anyone.
Okay, sorry for the tirade!
Of the old times, Renata Tebaldi, Anna Moffo, Roberta Peters for coloratura, and Birgit Nilsson rank among my favorites. Mirella Freni was wonderful as well.

u are right it was the salzburg festival..i onfused myself with her Le Bhome perofmeance. What I find wonderul abtou netrebko is her wondergul all around package. NO PRESENCE?! the woman is full of presence. she is charismatic-a real gem and a wonderful dramatic actress...I eman just wtac her Violetta peformance of "Addio del passato"...its just WOW.
i have conflicts about Ms. Gheorghiu. At times she can sound too monotone, some arias are just filled with sameness and no color or variation. Of course, she has a beautiful voice but the outcome is always sporadic..some good some bad, etc. Esp., in her Puccini album. her articulation can aslo be problematic. What i also find disnocerting is her broad rnage of arias that do not correspond to her fach. I mean one second shes singing Carmena dn the next the Jewel song?! come ion!! look what happened to Callas because of the same error.

I think we have exact opposite tastes! What I like about one, you like about the other, etc!
Well, to each her her own. They are both wonderful wonderful performers and singers, no doubt about that. (That's why they're famous)

I'm not the biggest listener of classical music, but I would definitely lean more towards hannahshule's tastes...

*mwah* elevenprincesses!
I just got back from Il Bariere di Siviglia at the Met. Very zany production, and Juan Diego Florez was loevly, and the Rosina (some German woman, wilol have to look in program for name) had excellent technique!
Next up, La Boheme in a few weeks, and then Simon Boccanegra (with my darling Angela)!

I just had a master class with Jane Bunnel, a professor at DePaul AND she's done tons of shows at the Met.
She was talking about how she lives in chicago and is flying to NYC in two days... to work on her shows at the met...
I'm like damn, I want your life.
! I just sent in my tapes for pre-screening to colleges! I kissed them, and told them to give me a good audition.
Is it wrong I'm going to be a vocal performance major, yet I've never seen an Opera? Eh... I'm sure I'll be fine.

You know, I wanted to be a Vocal Performance major for awhile... but I really don't have the amount of formal training that most applicants do.
Plus, Musical Theatre has always been my passion.
So hooray for happiness.
And I'm sure it's okay you haven't seen an opera... just don't tell them.

You have a great voice! I actually only saw my first live opera about 2 years ago, at a local theatre.
I'm sending you with lots of good luc for auditions!

I hope you do wel!
Unfortunately, i can't go to the met as often as I'd like since I live in Florida!
I go every summer though and I always try to go to those shows they hold in the park ..i think the last one i saw was Turandot...its something different. You dont't have that in miami. but actually, they just opened up a new state of the art opera house. Very beautiful. I just saw Aida the other day-blew my mind. The next show is la Sonnambula but what I'm reaaallly waiting for is Samson et Dalila with Denyce Graves..so exciting!

Huzzah!!
So, new question: who or what inspired you to study music/singing?
Mine, as silly and cliche as it sounds, was Sarah Brightman in POTO. I was 3 years old. I always wanted (and still want to) be able to sing as high and as powerful as she.
Though, obviously, I have more qualified vocal role models now that I am old enough to know who they are

Justagirl, that's awesome! My sister can't sing for her life.
Until a few years ago, I was really more of a musical theatre singer who occasionally (sp) did some artsy songs. Then, I don't quite know what triggered it, but my voice teacher had me do this exercise (Bella Signo-o-o-oraaaa) just a four step scale, but facing out towards the room (not the piano) and once we got into my top register, I realized this whole new quality of my voice, and it felt so powerful and rich, and decided that classical music was for me. The after that, I started to listen and watch more and more opera and classical performances, the more and more I loved it.
