Posted: 12/19/06 at 6:11pmI actually got the college talk today. I'm hoping to intern for a Broadway producer this summer. That would be amazing. Unfortunately, it's virtually impossible to get a good journalistic internship in high school.

For a late Hannukah Present I just got "Beverly Sills: Made in America". It's so interesting and at times a very inspiring documentary of a great coloratura soprano.
Also of note: a few weeks ago BBC1 had an incredible documentary "Imagine...Beinga Diva" but unfortunately, I am unable to find it on DVD
Does anyone have summer plans yet? I have lots of auditions coming up!

Got an audition at DePaul, got rejected from CCM.
February is going to be the worst month of my life (auditions every weekend)
and a Josh Groban concert in between. :)

Summer...auditioning for Boston Conservatory, still not sure if I have time to audition for Tanglewood because I can't make it to any of the dates, sending in app for Carnegie Mellon as soon as I can and NYU's out.
Busy busy busy!

Isn't Tanglewood at Boston conservatory?
EDIT: My bad, it's Boston University. (And I should know, I live here!)

Hey all. another lyrical soprano joining. i can sing up to an f above high c, and i keep going. my goal is 4 octaves, i have 3 1/2. but recently i've been singing tenor in Felix Mendelssohn's Lobgesang. It's fun. So i've got the lower range to strengthen my upper. does anyone else have this? because i think a lower range is essential to singing, especially opera and musical theatre.
Soprano Love!

Posted: 1/5/07 at 12:40amI've been working out my lower range a lot lately, especially my belt with the role I am currently playing (Reno in Anything Goes)... so yes, it can be quite challenging sometimes, no? Especially if you are used to singing high all the time... oi.

F*CK... I just got denied from Oberlin... and I was also denied from Cincinnati.
So that doesn't mean my grades suck.
It means my voice sucks.
Goddamnit
I'm having a really hard time right now guys. I just want to go to college and study music...

LilMiz, your voice does NOT suck! From what I've heard on your myspace, it's absolutely gorgeous, and if they don't want you then I don't know what they want. Where else have you applied?
I haven't heard from Oberlin yet, but if they denied you, then I'm certain they denied me. I've already been denied at New England Conservatory and Mannes.
At least I got an audition at Rice though, which is where I want to go the most out of those conservatory-type places.
This whole situation has got me thinking that while I love classical singing so much, musical theatre is my passion and I don't think I can give that up for four years. I love straight acting too much. I've been applying to NYU, Fordham, and Pace just for English or Dramatic Lit just to see how I do not performing for a year. If I can't do it, then I'll transfer into a performance program, whether it be voice, musical theatre, or straight theatre.

Thanks for the support Blair, it means a lot. :)
I've applied to
DePaul
Northwestern
U of M
Oberlin
Cincinnati
Manhattan
Roosevelt
I have auditions at DePaul, Northwestern, U of M and Roosevelt, and I haven't heard from Manhattan. Probably got denied from there too...
Gah, I really hope I get into DePaul.

You aren't the only people scared... I have this awful fear I'm going to be stuck in my home state, not getting my degree in Musical Theatre, but in English or some other "back up" plan... honestly, if they rejected you, their loss!!! So many factors go in though... where you are located, whether or not they can offer you good financial aid, whether or not they have too many people similar to you vocally and whatnot at their school...
Such is life. But what will be, will be... sometimes this stuff is out of our control (and I mean this in an entirely non-religious way...just as a general idea)

Don't worry guys, you'll all end up going to great places!
And lilmiz, you have an amazing voice, when I heard you sing "Vedrai Carino" I was like 'damn, I'm jealous!'. It's still relatively early in the year (school year). If they didn't take you, it's not a reflection of your voice. A lot of times, they are looking for a certain type of soprano (not good or bad), and since every school is different, there is bound to be some that are a perfect fir for you, and THEY'LL recognize that you'd be an asset. All your school choices are great, at least one of them will be the right spot for you.
Don't lose hope guys!
*sends out lots of good wishes to all of you*

wow, i can only send compassion, i haven't applied for colleges yet, but anyway i am sure there is a college for you. LilMiZ, you are auditioning for some of the most competitive colleges in the nation, so it's not your fault. i have a friend who auditioned for Ithica in NY and he's amazing, but it's still unsure if he got in. i mean it could be something in your actual application (i.e. types of classes taken, personal essay) so don't worry.
could you give me a link to your myspace, because now i want to hear your voice?
I have confidence in anyone who has confidence in themselves.

wow, i'll tell you what, wow! i cannot believe you even thought you suck, LilMiZ! i can't believe colleges aren't begging for you to come into their department. wow! how long have you been singing. I would kill to sound that good, and i've been singing for 10 years!
I would love to find a way to hear other sopranos here. maybe then i will learn to be a better soprano. the problem is, i'm scared of my own solo voice, but not in a choir or anything, just solo! so kudos to everyone able to control that fear or don't have it!

Join the club Wardrobe (and welcome to thread by the way!).
I'm one of those people who would has an intense aversion to hearing myself on tape or DVD, (though my teacher says I'll get used to it). It's a combination of lack of confidence and the classic case of Singer's Insecurity.
It'd be awesome if more people posted them singing, unfortunately, I know that I am computer dumb when it comes to putting outside files onto a computer. Heck I can't even figure out how to get an avatar (if you guys have any adivce on that, let me know!).

thanks for the welcome, you're the first to do it. and it's good to know i'm not alone in my fear. I mean there's that whole stereotype of all sopranos being cocky and arrogant, and i was a little scared i would be shunted on this thread, but i guess not.

Posted: 1/7/07 at 4:53amYup, denied from Oberlin here too. Oh well, I'm not really that upset. It's not like I could actually spend four years in rural Ohio, anyway.

Yeah, when I first started looking, I was detetrmined to stay in a City, but now I've been convinced to look at some schools like Oberlin and IU in less...cultures areas.
I still think I'll end up going to a city setting though, I need the stimulation my dad tells me
