Posted: 12/1/06 at 3:55pmI do that excercise too, even though I'm still primarily a musical theatre singer. Speaking of theatre, is it sad that I had to correct my English teacher on the spelling? Usually, I don't correct teachers, but this was for a spelling test, and I had to ask her to specify, and she didn't know what to do.

well, technically there are two speelings. TheatER usually means a movie theaer or cinema and theatRE usually pertains to theatres with a stage. I also think that's the British spelling.
I'm pretty shy about correcting my teachers, especially because i have the hardest AP english teacher in my grade, and I feel like it would be just plain wrong to go against her.

2 random rants will be tonite's entertainment.
Rant 1) So my 26 year old choir director tried to tell me that I'm going to be a mezzo one day. I looked at her and was just like "You're kidding right? Yeah... that' EXACTLY why I've had three NORTHWESTERN college professors and another one tell me that I'm a soprano..." I really wanted to tell her that she didn't know anything, seeing as my passagio is at a Gb, making my range super high... God... I hate it when you feel like you know more than your choir director.
Rant 2) I have State Honors Choir/All-state auditions tomorrow, and yes I procrastinated and I'm learning four choral pieces tonite. But my accompianist decided to record one of them so fast that I can't actually learn it. Goddamnit. I'm soooo angry right now. I know it's partly my fault, but c'mon, he knew it was a learning CD, so there's no need to go super fast.
GOOD GOD I'M SCREWED

Posted: 12/1/06 at 10:40pmI know a bunch of y'all love Traviata. I found at today that my friend will be a maid in it at the Met soon...she told me and I thought of this thread.

She'll be Anina? That's wonderful! Tell her congratualtions!
LilMiz- don't worry, when you're singing Donna Anna or something at the Met, your 26 year old teacher will find that she is mistaken. That must be frustrating though.
It begs the question, how well do we know our own voices as opposed to our teachers? I think especially if the teacher has less exprience, and we know we've been a soprano, than we are indeed sopranos. Although, maybe you should ask her what made her say that, (ie, was it the color of your voice, etc...)
Good luck with auditions! (I promise you are not the only one who procrastinates)

I have some definite Mezzo qualities, but among talking with several college professors and private voice teachers, they are all in agreement that I'm a soprano, probably a Dramatic, which makes sense.
Eh, I didn't make state. But hey, gives me more time to focus on College auditions.
Speaking of which, just got an audition at Roosevelt for February 10!!!

reviving the thread!
How'd your audition go elevenprincesses?

Oi. That's how it went.
First one of the year, and I got nervous. I mean, I got through it okay and everything, but it wasn't spectacular like I had hoped for.
The good news is though, I got the lead (Reno Sweeney) in Anything Goes without being double cast @ my H.S.! Huzzah!! Not a soprano part at all, lol, but it sure made up for a mediocre college audition.

Awww, thanks hannah!
A huge congratulations, elvenprincess! Reno's an amazing part, and sometimes it's fun to play those non-soprano roles...i.e. every role I've ever played!

Posted: 12/9/06 at 1:25amLilMiz, they could've been referring to you being a mezzo in a choral sense? I'm most certainly a soprano, but usually get made a mezzo when I sing in groups.
If we touch,
Warning's fair:
I don't care
Very much

Posted: 12/9/06 at 2:24amThanks you guys! I'm nervous to be primarily belting... I need to work on being more comfortable with it, so a lot of practice will be involved... anyone know any good exercises to help?

Posted: 12/9/06 at 8:14amYou know when italians (on TV at least) see someone they know and they yell "Ay! Tony!" I think that that's sort of the position you wnat to be in for belting, like with the high larynx and all. Hmmm, I wish I knew more, maybe the mezzo's can help?

suchclumsy, I don't think so. My soprano section is composed of seven sopranos (including me) and I'm the only one that can hit the high notes in Schubert's Mass in G without complaining like a five year old...
Man, the college acceptance anticipation is KILLING ME...

Doesn't college anticipation suck, btw??

Posted: 12/10/06 at 8:33pmI got a G above High C but I'm a better belter so I tend to stay in the Mezzo range. Speaking of high soprano territory... anyone got any suggestions of an audition song for Brigadoon.
#168re: Calling all Lyrics! (Sopranos, that is)
Posted: 12/10/06 at 10:10pmAnd I need suggestions for my Tanglewood auditions. I don't know many age-appropriate classical pieces. I think I want to do When I Have Sung My Songs for my English piece, but I don't know what to do for my foreign language piece.

Getting ready for all my auditions for summer programs, very exciting!
I'm now doing two lessons a week instead of one, which is also nice
My Fair Lady- any luck yet? I would suggest looking at the book 26 italian Songs. Perfect for our age, with beautiful italian songs. Go to amazon or any good music store and you should find it.
just make sure that you get the one for HIGH voice, not LOW voice, as these kind of things usually come in both versions.
Good luck!

Posted: 12/14/06 at 6:49pmThank you! Ugh, I've been so stressed and I really need to call my voice teacher. But I started some new songs that are promising.

Posted: 12/15/06 at 11:38pmSoprano here! I only just started serious singing in the 8th grade, but with voice lessons and good family talent I'm making my way up in the choir world in my town! The highest I've hit is an E6, which was an incredibly happy day for me. My dream roles are Cosette in Les Mis, Johanna in Sweeney Todd,Glinda in Wicked, Clara in the Light in the Piazza, and my far fetched dream of Christine in Phantom of the Opera. Plus, if I get my belting good enough, I'd love to play Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors. I'm best as the stereotypical blonde ingenue!

I think it's time for a bump!
Have any of you guys found out about colleges yet? I still have a year, but I've already met with a counselor and lined up some choices. Eek, two years will go by so quickly!
