Loved Cass and Karen. Several years back, Richard Carpenter released a CD of previously unreleased recordings of Karen. It's brilliant! She had a voice like no other. They both had crystal clear voices. Amazing talent, and I miss them both.
WARNING: VERY CRASS JOKE ABOUT TO BE TOLD - DON'T READ IT IF YOU GET OFFENDED EASILY.
I know I'm gonna catch hell for this - but it cracks me up every time:
If Mama Cass had just shared that sandwich with Karen Carpenter - they'd BOTH be alive today...
wow, that's even less funny than it was the first time it got told in this thread.
interesting - I just re-read the entire thread and this joke was not in any of the posts -
That must have been posted by someone I've blocked - because it doesn't show up on my screen.
Ahh - that explains it - yes - I blocked that ()*%&^$$^*&) a LONG time ago.
I still play my "Creque Alley" 45 with scartches and all because I feel like she is still with us.
now that's irony, redhot.
That joke isn't going to score points in the angelic miracle karma bank.
Why does the story persist, after all these years, that she choked to death eating a ham sandwich?
duh, orion, because fat people choking to death on food is funny! just like anorexics not eating is funny! put the two together and you've got a can't miss combo! sheesh.
For die-hard Mamas and Papas fans, a Creeque Alley "analysis."
John and Mitchie were gettin' kinda itchy just to leave the folk music behind
Thanks PJ...some of them I knew, but others were fun to learn about.
You're welcome, Boobs. I've always thought of the line "Broke, busted, disgusted, agents can't be trusted, and Mitchie wants to go to the sea" as a kind of mantra.
PJ....I always thought it was mean to sing "all that's getting Fat is just Mama Cass" and I was mortified the 1st time I heard it...but thought what a good sport she is...now I know what they really meant by that line.
channel 13 wnet in nyc recently ran a fun documentary of the mamas and the papas called "california dreamin' - the songs of the mamas and the papas."
it featured michelle phillips telling a story about how she spoke to cass the night that she died. cass had just played two sold out shows at the london palladium and was set to play two more. michelle said that when she spoke to her she was so happy and excited. she said, "so i know one thing, she died happy." i'm paraphrasing a bit here, but that was the gist of the tale. it was a fun documentary.
I always loved her voice - so rich and smooth. Dream a Little Dream was one of my favorite songs when I was growing up. I don't think I ever owned any of their stuff, but my brother, who is ten years older, may have had some and played it around the house ...otherwise I'm not sure how I would have heard it - we didn't play the radio, only records, for some reason.
Look what just came out!

How can you NOT love Mama Cass?!
What is sad is that she would NEVER be a huge pop star if she were discovered today.
i love cass. she is honest and refreshing.
for me, the greatest version of SUPERSTAR was recorded by bonnie bramlett, the woman who wrote it. it's such a contrast to karen carpenter's version it's almost a different song.

I love Bonnie Bramlett! Her version of You Belong to Me gives me chills as well as Superstar. She was great on Roseanne too...very talented woman.

Loved Cass ... what a great voice. Also still playing her sister's album (from 1979) -- Leah Kunkel -- another great voice!
Welcome to the world of love and laughter baby.
