Love her?

I saw the subject line and said to myself, "What are the chances that papa didn't start this thread?"

Yes, particularly her three or was it four appearances on THE JULIE ANDREWS HOUR. I loved the blend of their voices.
The Julie Andrews Hours should still be on today!
Cass was also on the Carol Burnett Show a few times.
my question--how could she have been both a junkie AND fat?
She was a junkie? Really?
Poor thing...
"She was taking pills to get to sleep, was using drugs carelessly, and at times required full-time nurses to watch over her. Some people suggested that she was even using heroin towards the end of her life (though no drugs were found in her system by the coroner). After her death, her sister became the legal guardian of Cass's daughter Owen."
Middy--you can be a junkie AND be fat if you are addicted to downers. Anything with amphetamines or cocaine will stimulate the metabolism and curb appetite, but habitual use of marijuana, barbiturates, heroin, quaaludes, special K--anything that slows down the metabolic system--can put weight on. Mama Cass was NOT a speed freak.
But Glebb meant this thread to be about how wonderful she was.
How many other singers can take an old Louis Armstrong song and do it BETTER than Satchmo?
Stars shining bright above you,
Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you,"
Birds singing in the sycamore tree,
Dream a little dream of me.
Say "Night-ie night" and kiss me.
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me.
While I'm alone and blue as can be,
Dream a little dream of me.
Stars fading, but I linger on, dear,
Still craving your kiss.
I'm longing to linger till dawn, dear,
Just saying this:
"Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you,
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you,
But in your dreams whatever they be,
Dream a little dream of me."
y'know iflit, i expect that from robbie, but you? *shaking head*

Okay, I just watched a JA Hour where she and Julie did the music of Simon and Garfunkel. Gee that was swell!
Is there an episode with Peggy Lee on an airplane singing with some very lazy tears slowly falling?
Love Peggy on the Judy Garland Show.

That's JULIE'S CHRISTMAS SPECIAL, from 1973, with Peter Ustinov and Peggy Lee. Peggy's singing...oh, my, I forget. It's the age thing. I used to be a walking encyclopedia about all things Julie. It's starting to fade. Anyway, Peggy also appeared on an episode of THE JULIE ANDREWS HOUR, with Robert Goulet, where she sang a wonderful rendition of "Who Will Buy", among other things.
Edit - just came to me. Peggy is singing "Clouds/Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" on the airplane.

If Mama Cass had given Karen Carpenter her ham sandwich, those two gals would have been alive today.
Buh-dum-pum.

To quote Bette Midler - "Why bother?"
oh, Glebb, I LOVE her!
In fact, I am putting a CD in right now. Thanks for the suggestion!
PalJoey - that's one of my all time favorite songs.

Jeez, please don't quote Bette Midler around a Karen Carpenter mention! I loved Karen Carpenter (still do), and never forgave Midler for her cruel jokes. Especially, since it all began when Karen covered SUPERSTAR and had a great big hit with it, when Bette felt her version should have been the hit. Only in her dreams could she sing a song as haunting as Karen's rendition of SUPERSTAR. Or anything else for that matter.

And to get this back to Cass. She was a wonderful singer. One of the best, and she was taken too soon. I loved her rendition of I CAN DREAM CAN'T I?

I recall about 5 years ago on Thanksgiving I was watching the H.R. Pufnstuff movie on TV... there was a scene where WitchiePoo and her sister (Martha Raye)go to a witches' convention. There was this one big fat witch there, and I kept thinking, "how did this woman get this role - she can't act at all!" Then she started to sing... it was Mama Cass!
Later that same day I was flipping through the channels, and came across an old episode of Scooby Doo - with special guest star Mama Cass!
Ah, Glebb...you have inspired me to put on my soundtrack from "Beautiful Thing" I love how the film used her music -- and so much of it I hadn't heard before.
Today is yet another gloomy day in the city, I'm sure (the other) "Mama" will help brighten it.
"You've got to make your own kind of music"
Terribly sad that she's no longer with us...what a VOICE that woman had!!! Oy!
mama cass had such a beautiful voice. her voice soared on her mamas & papas recordings. she was truly gifted. too sad she was taken so soon. but her voice lives on through those recordings.
words of love, so soft and tender
won't win a girls heart anymore
if you love her then you must send her
somewhere where she's never been before
worn out phrases and longing gazes
won't get you where you want to go, no!
words of love, soft and tender
won't win her
