BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese couple tried to name their baby "@," claiming the character used in e-mail addresses echoed their love for the child, an official trying to whip the national language into line said Thursday.
The unusual name stands out especially in Chinese, which has no alphabet and instead uses tens of thousands of multi-stroke characters to represent words.
"The whole world uses it to write e-mail, and translated into Chinese it means 'love him'," the father explained, according to the deputy chief of the State Language Commission Li Yuming.

At first I was like "wtf?" but actually, what it means in their language...it's sweet. It would be different, I think, if they lived here or in a non-Chinese-speaking country.
It's a great pity that China has a one child policy. Otherwise, they could raise a whole line of expletive deletives.
@##&$*@# etc.
I think I'll name my kid Ampersand.
I don't get parents like this.
It's a lame attempt at trying to make their kid special or unique. How about actually RAISING the kid to be original, instead of slapping a funny name or a fancy coat of paint on to do the job for you?
"@" indeed.
If someone has twins they could be call ( and ) and Rich kids could be named $ What next?
"Prince" started this whole damn thing!
I considered naming my son "Umlaut," but everyone told me he'd be confused all his life with Uma Thurman.

Best12, I hear ya'! My father's wife had a baby several years ago and gave her a 'different' name so she could be 'special'. Then she got upset and almost changed her mind when other women were naming their babies the same thing. Ridiculous.
Remember when the son of Barbara Hershey and David Carradine changed his name from "Free" to "Tom"?
