I am glad that they did not wait the full 30 hours.
And, if this vote goes as expected, Obama, and his DOD deserve some credit. Not all of it, but some.

Posted: 12/18/10 at 1:50pmI agree...if it does pass the Obama admin deserves SOME of the credit.

Posted: 12/18/10 at 2:13pmOkay folks, help a deserter out. I can't figure out what's happened and what still needs to happen. I am traveling and getting conflicting info. Has the senate passed the repeal? Is there still another vote? Is something still coming at 3est? I can't seem to get a straight answer.

"WASHINGTON -- The Senate voted 63-33 on Saturday to end Don't Ask, Don't Tell, defeating a 17-year policy of banning gay and lesbian service members from serving openly in the military.
Five Republicans crossed the aisle to vote against the policy: Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Scott Brown (R-Mass.), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) and George Voinovich (R-Ohio)."

The Senate filibuster failed, which means now the vote can come to the Senate. You needed at least 60 votes for cloture so that the matter could even be voted on. There were 63 votes for cloture.
At 3PM EST there will then be a vote to actually repeal DADT. It is presumed that they will have at least 63 votes for repeal.
If DADT is repealed, then I believe there will by 60 days at least for implementation.
The biggest hurdle for all of the legislation in the Senate has been getting the 60 votes to close off debate/end filibuster.
So in about 40 minutes, we should know for sure.

Posted: 12/18/10 at 2:26pmI hope that mean old people will still be able to go on tv and talk about how gay people being open will destroy the fabric of the country and the military. It won't feel like America anymore if they don't.

Posted: 12/18/10 at 2:32pmDon't worry. There will always be pushy bottom Marines (redundant) who will want to demonstrate basic Jungian psychology by whining about how dangerous having soldiers free to name their sexual experiences will be to their morale.

The actual vote is underway now. They need only 51 votes.
In the arcane rules structure of the Senate, they need 60 votes for "cloture" (closing the discussion and moving to a vote, ending "filibuster"), but only 51 votes to pass a bill.

It just passed 65-31!
Thanks to all those cowardly Republicans who switched sides only when it was safe to do so.

Thrilled!! All that needs to happen is the President needs to sign, and the Pentagon needs to certify repealing the policy!! Amazing!
If Joe Lieberman keeps this up, I may to rethink voting against the man in 2012.

Strange logic you have there, Jordan. You blamed Obama when it looked like it would not pass, but now that it did, you give him no credit at all. Make up your mind, would you ?

It was 232 years ago that the first soldier was discharged from the army for being gay. This is historic! Enjoy the win and hope it's a glimmer of things to come.
