Posted: 12/18/10 at 6:38pmAccording to ABC News, the Pentagon could take 3 months to a year to "roll this out". What are they "rolling out"?

Here's where the real shell game begins.
First, the president, the JCs, and a few others have to "certify" that the repeal wont "impact the function of the military during war time" (which, these days, seems to continue on into perpetuity, but anyway). Then there's a sixty-day period in which they think about how they're going to do all this. *Then*, there's anywhere from six months to a year of implementation.
And during any of that time, the ban can be reinstated.
But it's nice to see the US finally dragging itself into the 20th century.

At the risk of making Roscoe implode, Maddow states that
"this is the President's victory."

Posted: 12/18/10 at 9:10pmI remember reading an article a few months ago that the potential repeal of DADT could lead to other liberties, like DOMA being throw out by the courts. The military is very egalitarian, but DOMA would allow them to deny things to spouses of gay or lesbian like medical coverage or housing. That won't sit well with the courts.

Posted: 12/19/10 at 12:08amI think Dan is cured. He's been quoted ad nauseum in the past few hours. At least now he no longer has to shoulder the burden of being the face of DADT and go now go back to just being an average, ordinary, anonymous citizen.

Not now. Nothing's official. After the roll out, perhaps, but I doubt the Pentagon has much of a clue what it's going to do.

This is a victory, first of all and last of all, for lesbian and gay servicemembers.
But credit will be taken by all sorts of people we may think don't deserve it, from Joe Solmonese and the Human Rights Campaign to Dan Choi to the junior senator and centerfold model from Massachusetts to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and Joe Lieberman and President Obama.
And you know what? They're all entitled to take credit. Each and every one of them. Because this is politics and, as they sing in Evita, Politics IS the Art of the Possible. They all put their bets on saying it was possible--and whether we feel they did anything to make it happen or not, they won.
They win. The lesbian and gay servicemembers win. And the country wins.
The only loser is John McCain.

"The only loser is John McCain."
John McCain looks like he is going senile. And I am being absolutely serious. He does.

Maybe its the optimist in me (or the fact its 145 am and I'm home from the bar and feeling pretty good right now)...but I believe that this could be a major stepping stone for the gay community. Once America sees that this doesn't "ruin the military" or whatever other crap they were saying....maybe this will pave the way to get rid of DOMA and other forms of discriminatory legislation.
And John McCain needs to go away. The man has made me lose every ounce of respect I had for him after he lost the Presidency. His comments on the floor of the Senate today made no sense. They were completely incoherent. I'd feel bad for the man if he wasn't such a DB.

Posted: 12/19/10 at 1:48amHe must be. He's spent the past two or three years pretty much contradicting everything he said and did before then, so if he's not going senile he's just a liar and a dbag, and I don't think a professional war hero can be a liar and a dbag, can they?

Posted: 12/19/10 at 8:46amAt the end of the day, John McCain is nothing but a sore loser. He fought the Bush admin in their early days, not because he was a maverick, but because he lost to Bush in the primary. And he's abandoned any sort of principles he might have had to fight Obama at every opportunity.

The issue is discrimination, open bigotry aimed at a specific minority. Make no mistake, this is an important civil rights victory. I can't feel much enthusiasm for it, as I can never understand the motives of those who want to put their lives on the line in services of Big Oil Companies, and to participate in the active oppression of others overseas. Just think, gay folks can openly participate in Abu Ghraib and Gitmo. As Bill Hicks once said on the issue: "Anyone dumb enough to join the military should be allowed in."
This may of course pave the way for greater equality in other matters, as the issue of partner benefits (among others) will doubtless come up, which I'm sure will be fought tooth and nail by the Fourth Reich.
