Amazon has the 6th season of Grey's Anatomy on sale for $19.99 today. I have no idea if it will be that low after that. And they also have the entire first season of Glee for $14.99.

We must have different Gods. My God said "do to others what you would have them do to you". Your God seems to have said "My Way or the Highway".
These are the old Columbia Pictures titles via Sony. They've been selling their on-demand titles on their own Sony site, but now also on the Warner Archive site. They must have struck some sort of percentage deal with them on sales, since Warners doesn't own the rights to these films.
Very interesting backstage business dealings going on.
Thanks for the heads-up, Taz!
EDIT: By the way, the Sony back-catalog kinda sucks here. Seriously scraping the bottom of the barrel! There's not many "hidden gems" here, the way they have 'em at Warners, RKO, and MGM. Sheesh!

Does anyone else feel like they can't buy new DVDs once they own a Blu-Ray player? I've loved some of the deals on this site but I feel like it'd be such a waste to get DVDs at this point, yet at the same time I feel like a lot of these will never see the light of day on BD. I'm pretty torn.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
I still buy DVDs for rarer films that I think may or may not ever come out on BD. Part of the reason is that I have a very good upconverter built into my PS3. DVDs look pretty damn good on my 60" TV when they're converted to 1080p. Not all of them do, but if they have a good encoding from a good master, it's sometimes hard to tell the difference between a DVD and a BD.
If I have an option to buy DVD or BD, I'll buy the BD. But otherwise, when I find a movie (especially a rare one like "Dreamchild" or "Girl of the Night" or "The Phantom Tollbooth") that I really want to own, I'll definitely buy it on DVD.
Also, movies from the '70s were all (with very few exceptions) filmed on very lousy film stock. This was partly due to a trend in capturing a certain "grainy" low-light look, and partly to save money for the studios. There was also an odd return in the early 1970s (actually late '60s, too) to Mono sound. It wasn't until the late '70s sci-fi movies that sound went back to stereo, let alone surround, as the norm.
With that in mind, many '70s movies on DVD are looking pretty much as good as they can, and if you buy a BD of them, they don't look any better. They're still grainy, low-light, flat, etc. Movies like "The Goodbye Girl" or "The Godfather" or "Jaws" are fine (for me) on DVD. I actually own the DVD and BD of The Godfather trilogy because the latter was a gift, and I've compared the two visually. Not much difference. Same with Close Encounters (although the audio is a big improvement on BD).
So it's up to you, ray! With newer movies, you can definitely tell the difference between DVD and BD. And there are some older 1940s-1950s classics that look incredible on BD now (Ten Commandments, Gigi, American in Paris, Red Shoes, Casablanca, It's a Wonderful Life). It all depends on how good the original source material was, and how meticulous the restoration was.

Can't wait to get the Blu-Ray of FANNY AND ALEXANDER and RULES OF THE GAME. Man oh man...

Problem is I already own most of the ones I want on DVD. And even at 50 percent off, I don't feel like double-dipping. I do own the BDs of The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus, and they both look incredible.
Roscoe the (5-disc) DVD set of "Fanny & Alexander" looks stunning. I can only imagine what the BD would look like.

I actually really needed to get a particular criterion collection copy (Peeping Tom) to screen in the future at my house for a dinner and discussion about it, so that link to B&N was a godsend. Thank you, tazber!
Best, yeah, I own that DVD of FANNY AND ALEXANDER, and it is just astonishing. The Blu-Ray should be a real knockout. One of my all time favorite films.

Heads up that DeepDiscount.com is doing a 25 percent off bi-annual sale. Some good deals, but you have to sift through to find them. They're playing the old game of raising the "regular" price, then offering the discount, which in many cases makes it the same price (or even more) than it was in other weeks. So not every sale price is a good one, in other words.
But they still have plenty of deals to be found, especially for Blu-ray discs. And for me, it's no tax and free shipping, too. (I pay tax on Amazon purchases where I live.)
One of the biggest surprises I found today is THE MUSIC MAN Blu-ray, which went out of print shortly after its release, for some reason (I'm assuming they may do a 50th anniversary release next year, but nothing's been announced). I can tell you that the image and sound on this disc is fantastic. The DVD was blurry, due to bad color separation on the negative. That's been fixed, and it's sharp with plenty of detail.
They seem to have fixed the sound mix problem on LOST HORIZON, yes. But to get my copy exchanged, I had to jump through some hoops with Warner Archive, where I bought it, to get them to acknowledge the issue at all, and they're going to send me a new one when I return the mono disc. Big of them, right?
