I recently started watching Grey's Anatomy and they're surgical interns and get paid.

You know Sue it shocks me how you can relate to almost every single situation ever brought up on these boards. I find that suspicious.

I appreciate that this is an unfortunate story, but describing an investment bank intern--**voluntarily** putting in extremely long hours in the very reasonable expectation that it will result (in the near future) in a highly lucrative career--as a "slave" is shockingly inappropriate and suggests a very poor understanding of what slavery entails.

In my opinion.

That would be the histrionic attention seeking.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

I don't mean to minimize the young man's death, but his hours were no different from those I worked at a large corporate law firm in NYC in the mid-1980s. (I'm not being coy: it was Skadden, Arps.)

And while we didn't have interns, our first-year associates regularly worked all nighters and continued into the next day.

Was it a healthy system? Probably not.

And I'm not suggesting anything about this particular case, but in the 80s, a lot of the late hours were fueled by cocaine use, which was pretty rampant. (In my case, cocaine makes my nose bleed, so I got by on gallons of coffee and cartons of cigarettes (the latter still being smoked right at one's desk).)
