Oh Fox News...So this happened the next town over from me. It is listed as Burlington, NJ but it is Burlington Twp, NJ (there is a difference) and I know people who have kids that go to the school and Fox news was only taking quotes from people who were outraged(there weren't many)...a majority of parents were fine with it, they weren't fine with it being posted on youtube without there knowledge (which I don't blame them for). They are still pissed that fox has a picture of their kids on their website as well. Also the death threats came from out of state (Oregan, Texas, Colorado). It's sister district also got phone calls this morning because they did not have the right school district on their website till this afternoon, and they still haven't written a retraction from it.
As for content of the assembly, we do the same song for MLK jr and other famous African Americans in Feb, so whats the big deal?
fox
Teaching children to respect the President of the United States?? What an outrage!
Uhhhhh I am left of center and this sort of doesn't sit right with me. I read the lyrics to the songs and I can see where parents could be alarmed.
The scary thing is that alot of my friends in Virginia were looking at it like they were brainwashing these kids. I'm so glad I don't live down there anymore.

The lyrics are a little ridiculous, but this was done for black history month, right? Honestly, like SNAFU, I don't think it's so great or anything, but at the same time it's not like they were singing about stem cells or anything.
From an objective point of view - I think we're still free here to not respect the president if we don't care to. So - maybe that is one of the issues brought up by the parents.
Also - I don't think it's to teach respect for the president. Were there any songs sung about any other US president in the same vein? I'm not sure.
I am for Obama as president, but this doesn't sit well with me either.
... I'm praying for you even though you're already blessed...

Isn't that in Feb?

Me?

There are probably a million similar songs about Washington and Lincoln.
Although I do think it's way too soon to have one about Obama.

Jane, it is in February. For some reason I misread this has being done during Black History Month.
"There are probably a million similar songs about Washington and Lincoln."
How do you know? Can you reference just one out of the million?
I honestly think it's just a tiny bit creepy, too. But hey, we had to do a similar song about Christopher Columbus when I was in Kindergarten. It's not all that different.
SM2-- haha, I see what you did there. ^_^

Oh ok, you mean it was from last Feb~ thanks.
Old George loves me this I know,
cause Tom Jefferson told me so!
Ha! No, Jane. It's an excerpt of a song from EVITA, when the children are literally singing the first lady's praises. That's what it reminded me of.
Incidentally, in real life schoolchildren were required to sing the praises of Eva and Juan Peron each morning before class. Here is the song and below it is the translation:
Los muchachos Peronistas
Por la patria lucharemos
Por la patria que queremos
Con Evita y con Peron
Viva Peron! Viva Peron!
Por Peron y por Evita
La vida queremos dar
Por Evita Capitana
Y por Peron General
Eva Peron, tu corazon
Nos acompana sin cesar
Te prometemos nuestro amor
Con juramento de lealtad
TRANSLATION:
We children Peronistas
For the fatherland we will fight
The fatherland that we want
With Evita and with Peron
Long live Peron! Long live Peron!
For Peron and for Evita
Our lives we want to give
For Captain Evita
And General Peron
Eva Peron, your heart
Is constantly with us
We promise you our love
With an oath of loyalty
LOL SNAFU!
How do you know? Can you reference just one out of the million?

And this one is about Washington AND Lincoln!
OK those are really pretty horrible. They weren't however being sung in schools while either of those presidents were seated in office.
I don't like it, but it looks like the mistake of a teacher and/or principal who didn't think. People are freaking and saying, "this has to stop!" It's not like this stuff is being sent from the White House.
"Hooray Mr. President, we're really proud of you!
And we stand for all Americans under the great Red, White, and Blue!"
This is what is pissing everyone off. One frigging line.
Okay! We get it that SOME PEOPLE don't like Obama! Sorry we made the kids sing that they stood for 'all Americans'...
Maybe they should just change 'all' to 'some' or 'most'.
They sang a spiritual replacing Obama's name for Jesus.
It's no small thing and if my kid were in that school I'd raise holy hell.
It's extremely creepy, but what's even more shocking is the teacher's complete ignorance in not realizing how inappropriate this was.
This is wrong.
I hadn't seen what the actual song was....that is sort of creepy Taz. But what I don't understand is how is this Obama's fault? He didn't tell them to do it.
