God the Soundtrack for this is dire and so predictable, the music does not have a single moment of creativity in it.
Its one bland sound a like RnB song after another (even the title song has had an RnB make over), thank god for Out Here On My Own and one other new song which was pretty good.
Im all for updating the sound of the insist on doing a remake of what was an amazing gritty film, but when will America (no offence) learn that people listen to more than just RnB and Rap, in fact in the rest of the world is does not do as well.
What a let down, i will still see the film as its part of my childhood (its what gave me a passion for theatre, and oddly enough my first job was in the campy Fame The Musical for 2 years) but i dont think it will be any good
What's the track list?
ETA - I found it on amazon and sampled most of the songs. I heard a lot of electronica and ballads as well as some R&B.
But I'm pretty sure you're right that the movie is going to be another riff on the current trend of dance flicks.

I'm American and I don't listen to RnB or Rap at all.
SF, you must go to your local City hall and hand in your U.S Passport.
I thought Americans only listened to showtunes.

Megan Mullaly has a song on the CD as well...that basically sounds like Karen singing.
Mullaly, you have a lovely voice in person, use it again.
lolol i didnt mean every single person in America, i just meant as far as music culture today goes in America (Top 100) RnB seems to dominate
People on here just have taste lol
Some r&b is good though. John Legend's music is great and artists like India.Arie are very talented...

And in other decades it didn't. Art and music trends change and evolve. I'm not a huge RnB fan and can't stand rap, but it's not like there are no alternatives. I'm really not surprised that this remake is RnB-heavy. The racial and ethnic diversity of the original film (and subsequent series) is one of the reasons it was so iconic and successful. Now, a bad song is a bad song just as a bad remake is a bad remake, but I think if the idea is to update the original story, an RnB-heavy score is an indication that at least they had the right idea. The songs should be indicative of the current styles and trends of today's youth, NOT musical theatre performances. If I remember correctly, "I Sing the Body Electric" was the only number that truly reflected what they were rehearsing and performing at the school itself. But if we're lucky, the film won't include "Can't Keep it Down" or "Let's Play a Love Scene".
The original album only had about 3 good songs to begin with. Granted, I haven't listened to any clips of the new one, but just wanted to put my $.08 in there
Come on dj, the original has more than 3 goods songs!
It has 4:
Fame
Out Here On My Own
Hot Lunch Jam
I Sing The Body Electric
The musical however only has 1/3 of a decent song. It's total crap.
Excuse my ignorance....I meant 4 haha
I do agree with you though that the music in the musical version is pure crap. I didn't even get all the way through the cast recording before putting it away and never listening to it again
I loved the original album. I won't buy this one and I won't see it in the theater. This went straight to rental for me when I heard the line the girl says about being seen on YouTube. I just knew what I was in for.
Well, to be fair that is what musicians, dancers, etc. do now. They start a youtube channel to gather a fan base and, hopefully, get noticed by execs. A lot of the fans of the original have to remember that it is no longer NYC in the 80s where it was a lot rougher around the edges. I am not trying to promote the movie or anything, seeing as I have not watched it yet, but again.......$.08 :)
The Music in the original was great, it was all styles from pop, Gospel to Dance etc
I have no problem with Fame moving with the times, and yes with the racial diversity in the original and in this it should have some RnB, but other musical styles should have been looked at as well, this is to RnB heavy.
The original did not use music that appealed to a teen market (the comments on here show that) it was not even a film aimed at that market, hence the age certificate, they chose music that represnted different styles of the school and era. This one is just trying to appeal to the youth market.
"The songs should be indicative of the current styles and trends of today's youth, NOT musical theatre performances"
Its a performing arts school!!!! not a school for RnB 101
"If I remember correctly, "I Sing the Body Electric" was the only number that truly reflected what they were rehearsing and performing at the school itself"
I Sing The Body Electric, Out Here On My Own, Dressing Room Piano, Never Alone and Fame to an extent since its a song they were writing
"It has 4:
Fame
Out Here On My Own
Hot Lunch Jam
I Sing The Body Electric "
Dogs In The Yard was a great song as was Red Light
" But if we're lucky, the film won't include "Can't Keep it Down" or "Let's Play a Love Scene".
LOL I have to agree, they were the 2 main songs we HATED when performing in the show (as well as Think Of Meryl Streep) but i would much rather hear There She Goes, Dancing On The Sidewalk, These Are My Children, Bring On Tommorow than the rubbish on this New Soundtrack

I'm sorry, if you were there at the time, you know the original was hardly cutting edge or representative of anything artsy kids were performing or listening to. It was just pop, aimed squarely at the top of the charts.
Namo thats stupid
Except for a few of the songs (Fame, Out Here On My Own and maybe Red Light) the rest were nowhere close to being pop aimed at the Charts (You really think Never Alone and I Sing The Body Electric were chart gold lol)
I like R&B and I don't listen to show tunes. Throw figs.
Why do show tunes keep getting mentioned?
I dont think it should be full of theatrical songs, 1 would be fine, im talking about indie music, dance, latin etc

Don't kid yourself that any of it was artsy or edgy or creative.
Where did i say it was Artsy, Edgy or Creative?
It was music which represented different styles of the kids performance ambitions and tastes etc, it was well thought out and leant to the overall feel of a highly acclaimed, oscar nominated movie. The music in the new one says *we want these songs to be singles*
Hell Black and Gold was a huge hit here in the UK, thats the direction they have gone, the music does not lend to the feel or the charachters of the film, it lends to the charts.

"Highly acclaimed?" Where were you that year?
