"Avoiding Times Square like the plague" -- I'm with you on that one, Orangeskittles! Other than that....

-walking through the park (esp. during the spring months)
-walking around (particularly the village) while listening to frank sinatra or billy joel on my ipod (TRY IT. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
-sitting in a nice comfy starbucks, reading a book, or people watching
-strolling the west side streets longingly (as I am an east sider)
-finding a new street or bookstore to explore
-taking pictures
-going to museums....

My first trip will be this spring.

I definitely want to see Bethesda Fountain (I'm a fan of "Angels in America") and will go to the LDS Temple in Manhattan (Lincoln Center area)...and hope to spend time walking around and just looking.

Also, will be seeing "Barefoot in the Park" and hopefully at least one other production...probably a musical.

I can't wait!

Shows, duuuh.
Shopping...I have an unhealthy obsession.
Walking. I have a horrible sense of direction, and pretty bad memory so I usually get somewhat lost if I take a new route, even in the neighborhood I live in. It's pretty sad, but it's fun. I'm still trying to peace together the West Village, but once I find Magnolia's, Marc Jacobs, or Condomania I know where the heck I am.
The East Village...getting somewhat lost, and always winding up at Veniero's somehow for a canoli.

i like checking out those second-hand bookshops and sidewalk stands. more than once i've purchased beautifully aged copies of old favourites or fair-conditioned or even brand new copies of books i'd been meaning to check out. and for like, $3 a pop. i tell ya, nothin' makes me happier than walking home on a sunny afternoon with a tote full of newly bought books

i also think Teany is a lovely place to visit. i've only been there twice m'self but it's simply adorable. great food and AWESOME tea!! (my favourite's vanilla berry cream). definitely worth a look

really, phoenix? I don't like Teany's--I had a horrible experience with their food and drink. I'm with you on the book-hunting, though.

At my hotel there was a Broadway preview channel. I have no idea if a regualr person can get this in their home but it has behin the scenes footage/show footage/interviews and it just cycles through over and over again. It was on everytime I was inside!

We had that at the Doubletree. The clips are pretty terrible though. Rent was kinda cool (I think it was the OBC, don't remember) but Wicked's was dreadful.

When I went to Teany, I had the tea for 2. It came with tea, scones, tea sandwiches, and little desserts. It was both delicious and adorable.

Sigh....the hotel broadway channel. I have never seen anything so corny, but the shots are nice. The quotes are highlarious! "If you haven't seen this show, your rent is seriously past due!!!"

All of these involve (without mentioning it) at least some starbucks if not food as well!

Times square- pretty much only for cool eats or a show.
Central Park-picnics with the boyfriend!! Then to the Met.
Tompkins Square Park- Fun conversations with homeless people
Washington Square Park- Meeting NYU students and very interesting people
China Town-For cheap stuff!
Upper West Side- People watching
Upper East Side- More people watching
Astoria-Sleeping
