According to the stats from last year. And I rounded up in my initial post.

Actual numbers:

There 532,911 stops made in total. 297,244 were frisked. 32,315 arrests. 6,436 weapons found, the overwhelming majority of which were knives.

732 of those weapons were guns of some kind.

So, out of over a half-million stops, 732 guns.

Or something like 0.001% of all stops resulted in a gun being confiscated.

Again, these are numbers from the NYPD.

America shouldn't be about statistics, and it certainly shouldn't be about justifying violations of our constitution. This law is just wrong. It has always been wrong, and the only thing I find shocking is that it took so long for it to be overturned. It's hard to believe that NYC implemented such a patently discriminatory policy, and even more difficult to believe that New Yorkers stood for it for so long.

A personal antidote: Back in '73 when I had moved out of my family home to return to my High school to graduate (They had moved the beginning of my senior year). I had to have a full time job to pay for rent and living expenses. I had a night job at Hazeltine as a night porter. I would ride my bike to and from work. One night a cop stopped me on my bike and started questioning me as I was on my way home at 1 AM. As he was questioning me he kept slipping his hands into my jacket pockets and pulling out their contents. He also patted me down. I will tell you I felt extremely violated! Luckily I had a loosely wrapped half of a tuna salad sandwich in one of my pockets and he got a rather nasty handful.
The is absolutely NO way this should have been allowed. If it means someones daughter might be taken out, I have a suggestion!

The city’s first black mayor isn’t about to abandon stop-and-frisk.

David Dinkins said such searches can help reduce gun violence.

“I trust Ray Kelly,” said David Dinkins, who first appointed Kelly police commissioner in 1992. “That doesn’t mean Ray can’t make mistakes. We got a lot of police out there, and they’re not all perfect.”

But, Dinkins added, “clearly, it’s a good thing if we can get weapons off the street.”

He joined Rep. Charles Rangel to endorse Bill Thompson for mayor yesterday in Harlem, where the contentious stop-and-frisk issue came up again.

Rangel reiterated his support for allowing cops to do their jobs as long as they follow the law.
