Haha, yeah, that part was terribly cheesy/corny/unrealistic/impossible. She chould've just as easily found some fairydust from Tinkerbell that gave her a triple axel of something. You gotta have some good old-fashioned Disney corn every once and awhile, though. Mmmmm, cheesy goodness!
I read on the USFSA website that Amber Corwin has retired from competitive figure skating. Personally, I'm surprised she stayed in the sport for as long as she did. You have to give her something for her determination, but in the 10 years of competing she only placed in the top 3 once.
Awww, that's a shame. Smart move though!
Don't forget, the world championships are being aired tonight on ESPN from 7:30p - 11:00 pm.
I'm sad to admit this, but I had a poster of Brian Boitano on my closet door when I was little.
What would Brian Boitano do if he were here today? I'm sure he'd kick an ass or two, that's what Brian Boitano'd do!
I always liked Amber and loved her tenacity. Her, Angela Nicodinov and Nicole Bobek. Tho Michelle is my favorite, I was always rooting for them.
sort of off topic, did anyone see "The Next Skating Star" on the WE network the other night? It was atrocious. One of the worst reality shows I've ever watched.
Kristy Yamaguchi was a terrible host (very awkard) and Rudy Galindo was so overly nasty (trying to be the "Simon" of the group, I suspect) and they didnt make any sense. He told an 18 year old girl that she needed to lose weight. Just disgusting.
Doodle, didn't even know that show existed. Glad I missed it.
Doodle, I'm glad you brought up angela. I was a really big fan of her all during her career, but one t hing kept me from really appreciating her skating. SHE NEVER NEVER SMILED. She made skating look like a chore and was always depressed and sad looking. After a while, I gave up on her.
It is an "American Idol" rip off, taking several skaters who have never cracked the top ranks (at least one is in his 30s) and making them compete. None are very good, but it was hard to tell from the crappy tape they showed of their first contest. It was a tiny ice in, I think, Kristy Yamagichi's basement...at least that is what it looks like. They were all in their practice attire and told they had a minute to show the judges what they could do. No music. It was ridiculous, but only one was really terrible. Kristy looked constipated and was barely in it. Elvis Stojko, Pasha/Oksana Grishuk (who stole the gold medal from Torville and Dean in '94, then stole May Usova's husband and parnter), and Galindo were the judges. You can hear their critiques while the skaters performed. Grishuk and Galindo laughed in the one guys face and Rudy told several people they were not good and very amateurish. Who is he?!
sorry to rant, kids.
I forgot about how Grishuk did that! Gah, that makes my blood boil. Poor Maya Usova.
I think that Usova did okay...she took up with Grishuk's partner, Evegeny Platov who was alot cuter, seemed nicer and they did a few professional competitions and Usova/Platov won.
Jane, I agree about Angela, but in her last year of competing, she got a haircut and seemed to really enjoy her skating and i remember thinking "Anglela Nicodinov's smiling!!" I was surprised how pretty she was. Then she lost her confidence again (always a problem...I call it the "Jill Trenary Syndrome" who was the first sufferer I remember...NOT a clutch skater.)
Angela had such potential but there was always something getting in the way. Unfortunately her mom was killed in a car accident last year on her way to Nationals.
Those who know me, know I'm no big fan of Rudy's either. Used to be, but not any longer.
By the way, Doodle, your comments about the show (and your avatar, as always) cracked me up!
Thanks, Dottie...btw, speaking of 1994 Olympics:

"Why, Why, Whaaaaa!"
I remember being 8 and thinking, "Is she really skating to the theme from Jurassic Park???"
Kitz, I think everyone (no matter how old or young they were) were thinking the same thing!! And then again, it was the perfect music for her to skate to.
Doodle, you're cracking me up too! I hated the way Tonya looked at that olympics.
Nicole Bobek's another one I had to give up on. She also had so much potential but she couldn't be depended on. Either she fell on every single jump (and cried hysterically) or she nailed the program and beamed to beat the band.
I asked my teacher when I took figure skating last semester what Nicole Bobek was like. I said that she always struck me as white trash. The teacher said I was right, and that she's kind of a bitch. Said Kerrigan is a bitch too.
I love it when people speak candidly
Nicole broke my heart too many times...she was actually the most talented, and had that wrong side of the tracks appeal that Tonya had, she just NEVER came through...remember her Zorba number the last year she competed? I saw her skate it clean and it was amazing, but at worlds?...nope.
Kitz, I love when people talk candidly, too. I always got the feeling that Nancy was a bitch.
We all know that the only true skating sweetheart is Michelle.
Doodle, I hope you're being sarcastic, because I'd hate to think that Michelle is a b*tch.
No...I mean that I love Michelle and she seems the most grounded and the sweetest.
Whew, that's a relief.
Somewhere back in this thread there is a post I made -- trust me, Nicole was VERY difficult to work with. She knew she had the pure gift of talent yet never was able to commit the 110% or more you need every day to be a world class athlete. As her fame grew so did her desire to bask in the warmth of it, thus making early morning and/or intense workouts --- difficult. (how's that for being polite). It's too bad -- Nicole had so much further to go but was far too interested in the endorsements and such that might have come.
Actually I recall laughing and thinking just how PERFECT Jurassic Park was for Tanya -- especially that year.
I think Nancy K. has gotten more of a bad rap from the infamous Disney world parade...I did not know her, only met a few times very casually. People I do know who have worked and toured with her have not commented on her negatively at all...but that's just my little bit of gossip to add in.
This is shaping up to be an "interesting" World Championship -- usually an Olympic Year this is the let-down competition...but as already commented (and I was in DC and in the arena) -- the sheer electricity and emotion in the arena with Zhen and Zao and then Michelle's freeskate ranks as two of the most thrilling live event I have EVER had the luck of being at --- four years later it still can't be put into words....
KMF, you've been missed. I'm glad you posted.
