Posted: 6/13/11 at 8:24amfor someone who "loves her job" as much as she claims she does, McDormand certainly didn't know how to dress on the night when her profession was being celebrated.

Posted: 6/13/11 at 8:56amOh, dear. That was a bit of a fail for going to a coffee shop, let alone going to an awards ceremony where you are nominated and, god forbid, actually won!

Posted: 6/13/11 at 9:09amFunny, but I expected that of her. She has never been a glamorus star. Her attitude seems to be..."this is who I am. Don't really care if you like it or not."

THIS is what happens when we allow screen actors to steal roles from stage actors.
My obscure thought: she looked like she had come from the set of a sequel to 1992's Passed Away, a black comedy in which she played a hippie-dippie nun.

What I think was more interesting was the frantic arm flapping she did as she walked offstage. You could only see it for a moment, but it looked like she was frantically warning the escort not to dare touch her, as the guide reached out to guide her in the right direction. Did anybody else catch this? Girl seems a little unbalanced to me.
As for the outfit, I just write that off as "pretentious star makes lame statement regarding not needing to dress fancy to be validated, while accepting validation through meaningless popularity award."

If only she'd worn it with Aretha Franlkin's hat.
artscallion---I did catch that, but my interpretation of it was more an "empowered" gesture. If you recall when she won her Oscar, she literally strutted up to the podium. Another odd walk. As she left the stage last night, she had that "don't break my stride, I'm hot stuff right now" thing going.
I don't get the feeling that she's like this all the time. Not even remotely. She's supposedly wonderful to work with. I think she's a genuine person, albeit a quirky one. And she just got caught up in the "I'm a winner" moment and flaunted it. I thought she was grateful, too, but when she left the stage, she was definitely pumped up emotionally.

Posted: 6/13/11 at 10:14amDon't hate on France McDormand's jean jacket. She brought the glamour like no one else last night. Plus, she's a talented actress who HATES being in the spotlight as a person. She doesn't do interviews and she hates doing press. Her Oscar speech was similarly unhinged and empowering at the same time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Phno8FKSl48

I don't think Fracnes McDormand is pretentious at all. She's always been like that. She's quirky...and doesn't really like the spotlight. I thought her speech was sincere.
"THIS is what happens when we allow screen actors to steal roles from stage actors." Not at all. She gave an amazing performance and deserved to win. I just hope she comes back to the stage soon.

Frances McDormand started on the stage. She's been in more classic plays than many actors without film careers.
That's like calling Bernadette Peters a TV actor.
Or Angela Lansbury a movie actor who dabbles in theatre.

Posted: 6/13/11 at 10:50amI like her. But I found her outfit disrespectful and her speech and manner to be highly pretentious. I know she is a wonderful actress and I am sure she is as sweet and demented as can be. I don't care. It was the low point of the night.

Posted: 6/13/11 at 10:54amI was speaking with a friend who worked with her on GOOD PEOPLE (who by the way said in all his years she was one of the most kind actors he'd ever encountered) and we both thought she'd just show up in jeans and a Tshirt so to us, she REALLY dressed up last night. And I thought she looked great.

Oh, come on!
I'd pay 3 cent!
The speech I found "disrespectful and pretentious" was Mark Rylance. Is he ever not performing or acting? Yuck. He creeps me out with his Master Thespian routine.
Frances wore a jean jacket. I can see why it bothers people. Her speech, however, was anything but disrespectful.

Posted: 6/13/11 at 11:02amI hate it when my attempts at sarcasm fail. I KNOW MacDormand has an extensive stage background. She's terrific in just about anything she does. I loved her in Good People, and was very glad she won. I don't subscribe to the theory that screen actors steal anything from stage actors.

Posted: 6/13/11 at 11:04amFrances McDormand being a "film" actress is a joke right? Cause these kids here will believe it. In the interest of accuracy, she made her professional debut on stage in 1982 in a play by Derek Wolcott. She is a member of the Wooster Group and performs with them regularly. She made her Broadway debut in 1988.

Guys, of course Madbrian was joking. He was riffing on Hunter Foster or whoever the hell it was last year getting his ass up around his ears about "movies stars" invading Broadway.
I loved the speech. And that was definitely a strange moment as she left the podium. I have no idea what it was about.

Posted: 6/13/11 at 11:50amThere was a time when actors, especialy NYC actors, were celebrated and embraced for their unique character and special aura. I applaud her for being true to herself, and not buying into the 'ready-for-primetime' superficiality that pervades our 'culture'. She is an actress, and passionately proud to be so - while also fully celebrating the other actors and their insular world. She showed up to participate with her peers, not play to Peoria.

Posted: 6/13/11 at 11:51amRegarding her exit, I think she was so overwhelmed she was trying to shake out some of the energy. I don't think she expected to win and she was honored to represent the entire play at the Tony Awards.

Posted: 6/13/11 at 11:53amExactly, Q. I'm sure there were many who said similar things about Diane Keaton's 1978 Academy Awards outfit, when she won for Annie Hall.
