The privacy issue really doesn't bother me, because I don't really care who sees anything, but I get what it's troublesome to some people. I'm really surprised we haven't seen this sooner, because the fact that it's cost prohibitive that has kept this from coming too soon.
What are the alternatives, though? The TSA never really seems to come up with effective procedures as it is; they just look at what happened the last time and incorporate that into your travel time. Do you mean to tell me it's going to make us safer to keep everyone in their seats during the last hour of the flight?

"What are the alternatives, though?"
I think an alternative is to have competent people in security positions who will do their jobs instead of punishing us for their incompetency.
But that'll never happen. Things have changed drastically during my lifetime.

Posted: 1/5/10 at 5:41amSo, who will the first celebrity be who gets their full body scan printed in the National Inquirer or on Perez Hilton's Site? I can see the headline now, "Airport Screener sells Zac Efron's Body Scan for 2 Million Dollars To The Tabloids!" If the Tabloids can buy medical records from hospital staff members anything is possible. Of course, I'm not being totally serious, but this is not really that far fetched in today's world.

As an older woman, I am not happy about these scanners at all.
Had they gone a step further and incorporated a health scan, I may have been a little more enthusiastic.
Eww, look at the size of that tumour, excuse me sir/madam, may I advise a visit to a health professional?!

Phyllis, I agree with you. It seems that they aren't looking ahead. Just reacting to whatever happens.
As far as the divulging of information, I kind of agree with that also. After the fiasco at the White House, I was watching a Sunday morning political show (or CNN. Can't remember which) and they had a former White House security person on who sat there and listed all of the flaws in the system at the White House. (I hate when they drag these people on camera) Granted, the flaws may not still exist but in my opinion, I feel that if a person takes this job they should sign an agreement never to talk publicly about security issues. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I have seen this done on several occasions. I have heard some information that I have literally said out loud to the tv, "Why not just hand over all of our security information".
It still kind of amazes me that with all of the military technology, space technology and personal technology we have, we still can't get this right (so to speak)or find Bin Laden. JMO

I've noticed this. Last time I visited NY, it took ages to get through security at Heathrow, but they hardly even sent me through a metal detector at JFK. Thanks, guys!
By the way... what on earth do you mean by "CHEEZE"? Can't work it out. O_O

Posted: 1/5/10 at 12:34pmI'm going to have to vote nay on this as well. Not only do I find it way creepy but there's already a history of cancer in my family. My father died of a very brutal form of the disease so I'm already more likely to get it than someone else.

Cheeze is my variant on cheeze louise or sheez louise or i guess even sheesh.
I picked up the expression about 35 years ago from Jayne Eastwood's character in "Goin Down the Road". Which if you are not Canadian ( and even sometimes if you are) is absolutely meaningless.
(her other great line was "I'm bummed out" but on this board that could lead to trouble!)

Posted: 1/6/10 at 3:46pmNo. The government should be putting our money into hiring qualified security screeners or having Homeland Security staff our airports, rather than installing these ridiculously intrusive and expensive scanners, to be operated by under-trained, under-paid, unqualified airport employees.

the quote is: they who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.
what specific liberty is being sacrificed here?

Which is often paraphrased as "Those who sacrifice freedom for security deserve neither."
Either way, it's a saying, papa, not a law.
How about the liberty to not be oogled at in an xray to get on a damn airplane?
TSA is all about safety after the fact. Too much, too late. People shouldn't be degraded to the point where they need to be xrayed because of THEIR fck up! It followed the same formula as the shoe bomber. WHY was TSA not watching him? WHY was it up to passengers to take care of him?

Oogled at?!
Do you think a screener is going to have enough time for oogleing?
As a theatrical dresser, after you've seen the first 50 naked people, you don't care any more.

"How about the liberty to not be oogled at in an xray to get on a damn airplane?"
Well...there are several alternatives. Driving, taking a bus, a train, or a boat just to name a few. None of which require a full body scan to be a passenger. Flying seems to be the mode of transportation that the terrorist favor, so it follows that more scrutiny will be given to passengers who fly. No one is forcing you to fly, so no one is forcing you to be "oogled" thus no one is taking away any of your freedoms.

"Exactly. What happens when planes do become bomb free?"
And this would be a bad thing?
"Do the terrorists give up?"
Probably not. So, should we simply allow them to carry their bombs on board now, because in the future they might turn to bombing something else, if they can no longer bomb planes. Yup, makes sense to me.
Since most cities have more than one carrier that serves them how bout we have one carrier for the people who don't mind going through a full body scan and another for those who do. That way you have a choice. I wonder which one the terrorist will choose to fly?

You obviously haven't spent much time at an airport.

Supposedly, this will be only a 2ndry search for "suspicious" individuals and you will have the alternative of being personally patted down/frisked.
