I swear to god, I keep reading this thread title as Gay Bears in Manhattan, and thinking it is redundant.
I have been on BWW too long.

I went to the Townhouse for the first time just this year, and I found it terribly uncomfortable. It looks like the lobby of a hotel that's putting on airs or the set of a soap opera- very artificial "classiness". If I want to drink and sing around a piano, I'll go to Marie's Crisis.
In midtown, I think Barrage and 9th Ave Saloon are my faves. Barrage's happy hour is wonderful and they give very generous pours. A glass filled to the brim with Jameson for only $6!

That's one of the things I loved about it. I kept waiting for Dr. Dorian Lord Vickers Buchanan to walk in and greet me warmly.

The impression I got from being there, and from those I know personally who frequent it, is that although the hustler dynamic is gone, it's very much young gays with a eye on being upwardly mobile and older men who are into them.
I do not mean to disparage those members here who frequent and enjoy the bar.

I enjoy the Townhouse in a very Margaret Mead kinda way.
Or perhaps it's more Dian Fossey. Who can say?
But I genuinely love it. The whole 'sugar daddy' aspect doesn't bother me in the least. I'm not yet a daddy...and I ain't never been a twink...so it's just fun to watch! You come with me next time, Kad...we'll have a delightful time. The last friend I brought with me seems to have enjoyed himself quite a bit!

From the TownHouse website:
Here is a list of items that may inhibit your entrance to the club:
Hats or baseball caps
Gym or workout gear
Sleeveless shirts or tank tops
Ripped or torn clothing
Oversized jeans or t-shirts
Head bandanas or do-rags
Cut off shorts
Lycra spandex
I'm pretty sure that at any of the gay bars in Vancouver, Seattle and Portland you won't be let in unless you ARE wearing at least one of the above

The Townhouse doesn't totally adher to that list. I think that list is from when the place was full of hustlers. They have since gotten rid of, most, of them. I love the Townhouse.
Stopped by POSH a while back after the opera for a drink. It was a Friday. They scanned my ID and when I walked in it was packex and loud. I used to go there a lot but it now thinks it is a dance bar.
My favorite spot has become Uncle Charlie's. Decent drink prices. Strong drinks. A piano bar room, seperate from the main bar, that reminds me of the Brady Bunch's den. They have open mic nights and a rooftop patio. They also have shelves of books to choose songs to sing from.
Haven't been to Barrage in a while. Then neve seemed to know their drink specials and 9th ave Saloon bumped up prices. It is a dive. The bathrooms are just skanky but I had fun there when I was going. They have a jukedbox. If things are the same as last year, expect to wait up to 10 minute for a drink.

Posted: 12/31/14 at 7:43pmThe main problem with POSH is there really isn't room, if it wants to be a dance bar. Get some drinks into the patrons and there all over the second half of the bar, which happens to be the widest area. If I go I tend to stick closer to the front, that way, I'm avoiding the drunk twirling and carrying on. But then I feel squeezed into a narrow space, especially if it's busy. 9th Avenue Saloon, I never had to wait at all to get a drink. However, the few times I have been there, there were never more than 10 people in there.

Posted: 1/1/15 at 10:40pmWe ended up only being able to visit three bars that night, so we started off at Barrage, went to Flamin' Saddles (loved the barmen dancing on the bar) and then danced away at Therapy. Thanks for all the other suggestions. I have written them down for my future visits. I did want to go to The Townhouse but couldn't fit it in. Next time...
