What's your fav?
Mine is REBECCA--Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, and that MENANCING Judith Anderson as Mrs. Danvers!
"Last night, I dreamed we went to Manderlay. . . :)
REAR WINDOW is one of the most perfect films ever made.
And M_E, REBECCA was made in 1940, just ONE year after the last good movie was made according to you.
So close.
REBECCA is my favorite Hitchcock too.
Wish I could find the BBC version.

The Man Who Knew Too Much with Doris Day.
Hey Undie,
Did you know that Hitchcock shot ROPE straight-through from beginning to end, just like he was directing a stage play?
He thought it was the best way to heighten the fear of the John Dall & Farley Granger as Stewart comes closer and closer to the truth...
A WHOLE semester on Hitchcock?
Undie, that sounds GLORIOUS! :)
Dg,
When you refer to PSYCHO, I presume you mean Gus Van Sant's marvelous "remake" in 1998? :)
Rear Window is my favorite, although I'm partial to Stangers on a Train because most of it was filmed in my town in CT.
playing devil's advocate here -but whats marvelous about a remake that is shot-for-shot exactly the same as the original, with the exception of the cast?

Not sure why, but "Dial M For Murder." Yes, it's "stagy" but I like stagy (it's the reason I go to so damn many plays).
Redhot,
I - Was - JOKING !!! :)
thats what I thought, also.
Hey Margo,
Ever see the 1981 TV-remake with Angie Dickinson(!) and Christopher Plummer?
It was also scary, but in an entirely different way! :)
I cannot decide which of his films I love most - just saw Lifeboat for the first time and that was fun. I've always had a thing for Rebecca, and certainly get creeped out by Rear Window..but I might have to choose The Family Plot - just for the sheer brilliance of Barbra Harris!

I also enjoy Lifeboat and the original The Lady Vanishes.
Call me crazy, but I still love the Tippi Hedren duo: THE BIRDS and MARNIE.
Margo,
THE LADY VANISHES is GENIUS!
Ever read the novel the film is based on?
now HOW could I have forgotten Vertigo - one of my favorite films of all time? I guess all this business of opening in a week has me all strung out!
Hey Morosco,
Did you know that VERTIGO was based on a Ftench Novel "D'Entre les Morts" (From Among the Dead) which was written specifically by authors Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac so Hitchcock could use it as the basis for a movie?

My favorites are TO CATCH A THIEF and REAR WINDOW.
Question: Where does Hitchcock show up in 'Rear Window'?
Winding the clock in the songwriter's apartment, a half
hour into the movie.

thanks, I never could find him. I guess I have to rent the movie or wait until it's on Turner Classic Movies to see it.
