Watched the pilot this morning and it was ok. I loved 24 and after hearing the premise I thought it sounded like a ripoff, but with Colette I was down for the ride. Unfortunately I realized that "Hostages" would never have been the main plot of a 24 season, but rather an interesting, but pesky subplot Jack would have dealt with in 3 or 4 hours tops.
I agree with the above posters that there wasn't enough heart-pounding action. The acting was good, but the plotting was not.
Wickedrocks, I do disagree slightly that it was free of camp/ridiculousness. The family is basically allowed to function and the hostage takers are more like guidance counselors for the kids than scary bad guys.
I mean the family was able to cook and prepare a nice dinner? Did you see that spread? The hostage takers are very concerned about the family getting their chances to shower and change clothes. Are they idiots?
The son is WAY more concerned about his pot dealer than the people with semi-automatic weapons in his house. Likewise the daughter is more concerned about her love life/potential pregnancy than the bad guys too.
All of these things made me laugh and certainly took away from the seriousness and peril that the family was in. Their primary concern should be making it out of this alive (and what the choices their mother will make). If their personal issues are more important than the hostage situation the show will not work.
