Oh, good! Thanks!
Mabs, what do you think of the Oscar noms? (you may have posted in the Oscar nominations thread, but I didn't feel like reading through that whole thing). What does everyone think? I was glad to see that Kiera Knightley got a nod in the best actress category. For best picture, I was thrilled that Crash got nominated (I LOVE that movie), but I was disappointed that Walk the Line wasn't there. I wish it were in place of Capote (I've heard that film isn't spectatular, even though PSH gives an amazing performance).
ETA: Never mind, I just checked out the Academy Awards Nominations thread and found that you've all posted your thoughts over there!
I'm not going to post in that thread because I'm afraid I'll be chased away with pitchforks for saying that I hope Crash wins best picture and Reese wins best actress.

I definitely didn't love Crash. I didn't hate it as much as some on the boards seemed to, but I felt like it was a bit heavy handed...and I hope Reese wins too. I don't really know why, because I also really enjoy Felicity and I'm sure her role was much more of a challenge. I just loved Reese (and Joaquin) in Walk the Line. I guess I just want one of them to win, and there's pretty much no hope for Joaquin at this stage of the game, so I'm projecting it all on Reese!
I don't really know what I'd like to win for Best Picture. To be honest, I wasn't really enthralled with anything this year. I loved WtL, and I would have loved for it to have been nominated, but I also don't think I would have been pulling for it to win. While I thoroughly enjoyed it (and I'm itching to go back a 3rd time to see it...mainly to see it on a big screen, having seen it at our Town Hall Theatre), I would never expect it to win (certainly when it isn't nominated for director/screenplay, etc). I'm actually rather shocked it didn't get nominated. Usually they have one big box office hit in, and I'm pretty sure it's the only one to have gone well past the $100 million mark.
Awwww, I'm sorry. She sounds like a wench. It's always easier to get accepted when you know all the requirements of the application...such a charmer, passing along false info to you.
At least your still pending, Tiff. And there are always the others that might come through...And did you mail out those resumes/cover letters yesterday??
Anyway, I'm sorry it sounds like your having a lousy day. Please don't throw yourself out a window though (unless you're on the ground floor).
...and even then watch out for rose bushes.
Well the SH*Tty thing was the university's online program was stupid for not telling us the character limit in advance, and forcing us to cut and paste until, oops, we can't type anymore. And SHE finished her application first! SHE knew what the character limit was - and not only told me the wrong info, but told me to write MORE!
Argh. ARGH!!!!
What happened to your other post, Tiff? *shrug*
Yeah, that's really shady of that girl. Is she uber-competitive? She must be to go out of her way to lead you totally astray by telling you to write more, when she knew you were already over the limit...either that or she's just horrifically vicious! But yeah, you'd think that the university would give you some semblance of an idea about how much to write. Even if it wasn't an exact word/character count, they could have said "about 2 paragraphs/less than a page/2 pages," whatever, and then if you were ridiculously over, put some kind of block up asking you to condense. Very screwy if you ask me.
Wow, that's strange...I wrote a post on here awhile ago (about dvds and why Tiff's might not be playing) and it's gone. And apparently one of Tiff's posts is missing, because I have no idea what girl y'all are talking about or what kind of application problems occured.
Hmmm...I didn't notice your post missing, but Tiff posted about her wenchy friend who screwed her with her law school personal statements, and I noticed it disappeared (I had two posts in a row, her's that was in between got deleted). Very strange!! What else is disappearing?!?!?
I asked this to Tiff in the Harry Potter thread, but I feel like I am more likely to get responses here.
Have any of you read "Killing Bono: I Was Bono's Doppelganger"?
I have it out from the library and figure it's either really good or really bad and don't want to waste time if it's bad.
The reviews on Amazon are great, but I want to hear from someone I trust.
Also...I watched Hustle and Flow last night. Very interesting film. I am still processing whether or not I feel Terrence Howard's performance was Oscar nomination worthy, but I think it's a great sign that the Academy recognized and nominated a film that is outside of their box.
That sounds like an...interesting book. I haven't read it, but if you read it I expect a full book report!
I haven't seen Hustle and Flow yet, but it's on my list of things to see. I agree with you and think that the Academy is going in the right direction by recognizing a piece of work that doesn't necessarily fit the traditional "Oscar profile," so I'm glad Howard was nominated. He's a good actor (I really liked him in Crash).
Yeah, I really enjoyed Howard in Crash. In fact, I think it might be a better performance. I really wanted him to be nominated for Best Support Actor as well as Thandie Newton for Supporting Actress.
Although the more I think about Hustle and Flow, the more I like it.
#1Elphie, why is your post missing?? There was nothing vulgar or inappropriate in it! Reading this entire thread is just plain confusing now.
Anyway, did you guys read touchmeinthemorning's thread on Bono's sermon? I didn't have the energy or attention to Google it, but do you guys know where this was and in what context? Looks like he's fed up with Bush and he's not planning to keep silent on his thoughts about Bush anymore. Good for him!
How was Queer Eye for the last few days, Mab? You were on set, right? Anything fun with Thom? Furniture advice? Freebies?
Also, can you PM me your new dorm mailing addy? I'll bring your parcel with me to Seattle and mail it from there - it's cheaper and I'll get it over with! (Watch me forget something...it's been 3 months!)
I should really get more on the ball with watching the Oscar noms this year, but the money sitch really is making that prohibitively expensive. The little bro just started working at the movie theatre here and can probably get me in for free if he accompanies me, but I'm thinking Brokeback Mountain probably isn't his speed.
Hey all...Let's see (I think I'm going to have to go the #'d route on this post!):
1.) Pat, I haven't read that book, but I skimmed through it a bit at the Virgin Mega Store once, while I was waiting to meet someone. It looked interesting. I'd give it a go.
2.) I rented Hustle and Flow when I was home (in the lot of post-wisdom teeth, keep me amused all day while I have a valid excuse to do nothing but lie on the couch movies). I'm kind of up in the air about it. I think Howard's performance was good, and probably on par with several other performances for that 5th slot. Personally, I'd rather have seen Jeff Daniels sneak in for TS&tW, but that was never going to happen. Russell Crowe may have been a smidge more worthy of the nomination, but he's had his due for the time being. It's nice for them to recognize a worthy performance in a real break through year for Howard.
2b.) How funny would it be if the "Pimp" song won the Oscar?!?!? I don't see how they could give it to the Crash song, if it'd already been recorded on an album 5+ years ago (how it got nominated is still a mystery to me?!?!). And I don't know about the Dolly Parton song, but if it's just another "play it over the credits song," that leaves "Pimp" the only non-questionably eligable/actually pertinent to the plot/in the movie song. Maybe it's just me, but I always find myself pulling for those songs. I would have died if "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" had won for A Mighty Wing (or if the title track had been nominated!!!).
3.) I haven't read that Bono speech, but I saw the post yesterday. Frankly, I was just too damned tired to read it all when I got back last night. I'll give it a read today, and post a link to that thread for the rest of you guys. Sounds interesting!
4.) Queer Eye was fun. I didn't really do much of anything on set on Thursday, but it was interesting to see what was going on. Plus, I'm always for free food (even if it's just snack and such)! Everyone was really nice; very funny. Someone even bought me two squares for the Super Bowl pool (though I ended up with two really ratty pairs of numbers). Yesterday was long. It's a long (not so interesting) story, but I ended up going on a late run around 4, that had a few unexpected twists and turns, so I didn't end up getting back to the office until 7.
5.) Tiff, if your brother can get in to the movies for free, would he be able to get you in and then kind of go do his own thing? Do they check your tix right at the actual theater door, or do they just tear the tix near the front? If it's by the front, he could try to find another movie that starts around the same time as one you're interested in and just meet up with you afterwards??
Thread with Bono's speech
1. I skimmed Bono's speech and thought it was interesting. Do y'all get those One Campaign emails? Here's the most recent one that I got about the Prayer Breakfast:
"Today, Bono addressed the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C., reaching across divides to ask policy makers and faith leaders to do more to beat global AIDS and extreme poverty and calling on the U.S. to give an additional 1% of the budget to this fight.
In a statement today, Bono said: "It must be an emergency when an Irish rock star is being invited to speak at the National Prayer Breakfast and the House Democrat annual retreat all on the same day. And it is. Because in this long day 6,500 Africans will die of AIDS and 110 million kids won't get to go to school. The good news is that politicians on both sides, and more importantly the people who elect them, are all joining as ONE against AIDS and the extreme poverty in which it thrives. The great news will be when the effective programs to beat AIDS and extreme poverty are finally fully funded.""
Tiff, it just sounds like another call for leaders to do more about the problems in Africa, and I didn't take it as a Bush-bashing.
2. I'm glad being on set was fun, Mabs!
3. Remember when Eminem beat out U2 for an Oscar? I wouldn't be surprised if the Hustle and Flow song won; the committee has already recognized a similar song that isn't traditionally "Oscar material." I love the Bird York song from Crash, and I still hope it might be elligible. I've read all the controversy about it here but I don't know if we're missing something. I think whoever said that it was released earlier on another album of hers got confused. It was on her album that was released in April, 2005. I read this on Amazon: "Blissed Out Recording artist Bird York is soon to be heard in the Lion's Gate feature CRASH. York co wrote and performed the film's theme song "IN THE DEEP" (off this CD) at the request of the film's writer director Paul Haggis (writer of the four time Oscar winning Million Dollar Baby.)"

Yeah, I'm not sure what the deal is with the Crash song. I'd like to see a full-out explanation of it. I would tend to think it would be far too blatantly obvious (if the song was indeed recorded as pointed out by someone earlier) for that to really be the case. Though, I don't seem to recall that song being nominated for any of the other awards (critics' choice/GG).
And while part of me was hoping U2 would pull off a win for THTBA, I was secretly kind of giddy that Gangs of New York was totally shut out. I don't know. I really didn't care for it at all! And to have it nomintated for something like 10 Academy Awards and walk away with ZERO of them! I was a happy girl! I definitely preferred pretty much every other film nominated for major awards that year (About Schmidt, Adaptation, The Hours, The Pianist, Chicago, etc, etc).
I can't believe you wanted U2 to lose. And that you'd admit that fact on a U2 thread.
*shuns Mabel*
I didn't want them to lose, but in the grand scheme of things, I was able to cope with their losing by relishing the fact that their loss constituted a complete shut out of GoNY. That's all. Had Gangs picked up some random editing award and nixed the shut out, I would have been livid that U2 lost as well...and yes, I fully concede that this mode of rationale makes NO SENSE whatsoever!
Oh, and Claire, did you see this bit about Joaquin volunteering in Texas after Katrina??
Joaquin WHO ... ?
John Fouts of Okemos was a Red Cross volunteer working in Houston immediately after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast.
"Many times during my deployment," Fouts wrote in a recent e-mail to me, "I encountered celebrities - famous clergy, singers, actors, sports figures and politicians - usually with negative results.
"They would come in for very brief periods of time for 'photo ops,' seeking some sort of publicity."
Often, Fouts said, the nuisance created by the celebrities actually hindered legitimate efforts.
One volunteer, however, while turning heads, also stood out in Fouts' mind.
"This volunteer," he wrote, "worked with the staff for hours without a break and seemed to be everywhere, doing anything that was asked of him.
"In fact, I worked with the volunteer, shoulder to shoulder, for hours, loading trucks and trading jokes ... "
Fouts noticed that the young man was causing quite a stir among some of the other volunteers. They were pointing and buzzing and secretly taking pictures.
Finally one of them, a young woman, broke the news to Fouts: He was working with a movie star. She mentioned the star's name, but it didn't mean a thing to Fouts.
He was in "Gladiator," she said, but that didn't mean anything to Fouts, either.
Three months later, Fouts watched on TV as the go-getter volunteer accepted a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of Johnny Cash in "Walk the Line."
He was, of course, Joaquin Phoenix and, suddenly, Fouts had a favorite movie star. Ahhh, he's definitely my favorite actor du jour!
Link to article...
That's such a great story! He's always come off as something of a stand-up guy with a couple of personal demons. I've only seen him in Signs and Gladiator though (and if I've seen him in anything else, I don't remember) and he's got so much charisma! I dare say I watch Gladiator more for him than for Russell!
BTW, JFTR, I totally don't like THTBA. Not one of their stronger singles...I dare say one of my least favorite (cuz they're always still the Pop stuff...and I dare say I would almost choose Discotheque over THTBA - yeah, you heard me).
What's the plot of Killing Bono?
#1Elphie, I gotta admit, I just skimmed the sermon and didn't read it in too much detail. *blush* From what I picked up, I thought he was being very critical of Bush, more so than usual. I could be totally talking out of my a$$ though.
Yeah, Joaquin is wonderfully wretched in Gladiator...then Signs is amusing just because it's so far removed from what he usually does. I'd say another pair of good flicks with Joaquin are Quills and To Die For. I tend to really dislike Nicole Kidman, but I liked her a lot in TDF. And Quills...well, you really can't go wrong with Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslett, and Joaquin!!
And yeah...definitely not a fan of The Hands that Built America. It's one of my least favorite U2 songs, so even though I love them to pieces, it wasn't as huge an upset that they lost the Oscar on a song that really wasn't up to par with their catalogue of music, imho. Maybe they'll give it a go with another movie some day.
Oh, and Killing Bono is a book by a guy that grew up with Bono and was a friend of his in Dublin. I'm not sure if they went to school together or were friends from elsewhere, but they both kind of had the same interests, and the other guy was into music, etc. And I guess he was really talented, but while Bono ended up having all of this success, the other guy fell into obscurity.
*BUMP* for the Grammys tonight! Hopefully U2 will walk away with something.
I'll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed for them, but I'm kind of up in the air about whether they'll do well or not. Part of me thinks the album just came out too long ago for it to have much spark left in it and be remembered. We'll see, I suppose. I'd love to see them win album of the year though!
Nothing else of interest here. I saw Capote and WtL again yesterday with a friend who hadn't seen either of them (besides, the only other movie I wanted to see at my theater was Transamerica, and it wasn't movie-hop-able...I was not going to wait an hour for another movie!).
Guess that's about it for now!
Why I love The Edge.
ETA: an interview with Bono will air on Ellen tomorrow! Set your VCRs!

Aaahhh, gotta love Edge! I hadn't really heard a lot about the Music Rising project recently, but I'd be curious to hear just how many instruments they've been able to distribute.
Also, re: your PM question about the album being nominated even though it came out in 2004...I think the album came out in November, and the cut-off date for the Grammys is sometime in October. I think this would mean that OotS could be nominated next year, because it was released as a single in November (I think?). That'd be kind of nutty. Three years of the Bomb?? I'm not sure how it works exactly though, so maybe after this year, they're done, regardless of a song like OotS being released as a single after this year's deadline.
Uuuummm...guess that's it. Oh, on my current "I'm obsessed with Joaquin Phoenix" fit, I saw that he was at the Coldplay concert last night. Apparently he was in the front row and they mentioned him being there (maybe before the little Johnny Cash segment of Till Kingdom Come/Ring of Fire?).
Talk to you guys later...GO U2!
The cut-off being October doesn't make sense! I mean, I don't get why they'd do it that way. Oh well, I guess it's like the Tony season; the time frame isn't decided by a calendar year. That would be so strange if OotS were nominated next year, though.
That's cool that Joaquin was at the Coldplay concert; he has good taste in music!
Grammys start in 2 minutes! Yay!
