I wonder how early we should get in line for the GA? Perhaps we'd have time to catch a mat on Saturday as well??

Tiff, what's the Gibson thing? He's turned into such a nut lately! I think I'd be a little freaked working for him and "his people."

I know, Claire! It's a good thing you did too because I would've procrastinated forever and not gotten it done today. (I should leave momentarily to do that.)

Thanks for the list, Pat. Tres helpful - I just wrote it down.

I'm planning on renting 3 of those movies tonight and getting caught up on my Oscar fix. It's been too expensive and I've been too poor to see movies in theatres this year so I'd like to get caught up on as many as possible! (Will FINALLY see BM next weekend.)

I'll def look for Constant Gardener - I love Ralph Fiennes and Rachel's not bad.

Hm, I'm not sure about GA, but I don't think we'd need to be there all day or anything, so a Saturday matinee might be possible!

*adopts motherly voice* Tiff, you finished your McGill app, right? And remember, you won't get that job unless you actually fill out the application and write those letters!

mabel, it's just his company producing it (it's up in the air if he himself is overseeing it or just his people). It's a movie called Butterfly On A Wheel, starring (and also exec-produced by) Pierce Brosnan (who has only gotten better with age!).

I like a lot of Mel's movies and Icon Production projects. He sort of lost me with The Passion Of The Christ and his ramblings, which I hope were just taken out of context. Unfortunately, he seems to have made the path for another religious loon, Tom Cruise, eh? Still, he's generally had a reputation of getting along really well with people, and this movie looks really interesting, so I'd give an arm and a leg to work on it. (Maybe as Pierce's personal masseuse?)

I'll probably shoot off a letter to Icon's headquarters in LA too. I want to up my chances as much as possible.

I mailed out the McGill documents yesterday. *beams* My time slaving on law school applications is officially complete!

There isn't any application to fill out for the Assoc Producer or Butterfly On A Wheel positions - which sucks and is probably the reason I'm procrastinating. I don't know what they're looking for so I don't know where to start.

That does sound like an interesting project, Tiff. You should definitely cover all potential bases in going for it. But yeah, Mel does seem to have that Cruise loopy, over-zealous religious nut vibe lately. I just have this vision of him freaking out on some interview about stem cell research, where he got the crazy eye and was saying (in a totally psychotic tone) "Well, if life gives ya lemons, you've gotta make lemonade." Actually, for some reason, I want to say that he said something else after "if life gives you lemons"??? Hmmm...but yeah, it was borderline scary.

But on the plus side, like Cloony, Pierce really has only gotten better with age. I also love the fact that he's got a normal looking wife. She's really lovely, but not the typical stick-like model fair that so many celebs seem to cart around the red carpet.

The thing I like about Mel and Denzel Washington is that they've stayed married to an average-looking woman whom they met before they were famous. If you can reach astronomical heights of fame, wealth and success, be surrounded by temptations (of the female and nose-candy variety) and still stay loyal to the woman who was there for you when you were eating out of cans and going on auditions, it totally increases the sexiness quotient.

I wonder what's gotten into Mel lately. In the '90s and early millennium, he was known as a devout Catholic but wasn't really outspoken about his conservative views. But he says The Passion was 10 years in the making and it's always been on the back-burner. So what made him finally click?

Speaking of Clooney, he and Steven Soderbergh (sp?) are producing "Wind Chill" here now - *dies*.

I like Mel Gibson. He seems like a nice, down to earth guy. And I really enjoyed The Passion. I admire him for making films that are meaningful to him even if he has to take some big risks in doing so.

Tiff, you should try to get involved in Wind Chill! Sounds like it's got some big talent involved!

I thought The Passion was really well-made from a technical standpoint (and the acting was good too), but his comments and demeanor while promoting/defending it seemed a bit psychotic.

I applied to be a producer/cast/director's assistant for Wind Chill, but again - no calls. It's such a pain - there's so much nepotism in the biz, and I bet those spots are being filled by someone's brother or kid.

I've never really cared one way or the other about Clooney, but with all the George-mania that's struck Hollywood lately, I've decided that I rather like him. He's interesting. And he really just keeps getting better and better looking. Yeow!

I never saw The Passion, just because I knew it would be uber-gorey, and I have no stomach for that. But, I have to agree with Tiff, something with him just jumped the crazy track when all the mania hit with the film and its promotion.

Also, Tiff, I'd imagine the biz is very much like much of the work force with regards to people's son or niece or whoever getting a leg up on the rest of the competitive job pool. It totally blows, but I suppose it's just par for the course. One of these gigs is bound to come around. I'm fully ready to be totally jealous of you!!!

Me too re: Clooney - I like his personality more than his acting. He's so charming and disarming and self-deprecating. Love it. That's what I like about pre-crazy Mel too.

I have to admit that working for pre-crazy Mel has been a dream of mine for the last 10 years. I wonder if this is fate?

Oh, and re: nepotism, there was on PA yesterday who was the biggeste asshole. His dad was the locations manager, and this kid's a little late-teens/early-20s punkass. Hhe'd bounce his tennis ball all over the set, bitch at people for smoking on school grounds and then light up himself and walk on, and shrug indifferently when people called him on it. I haven't hated anyone in the film industry yet, but I would nearly say I HATE him. And I only dealt with him for one day.

BTW, how's Queer Eye, speaking of jealousy!!!

I used to like Clooney a lot, and I agree that he just keeps getting more and more gorgeous, but lately his political tirades have been bugging me. I found his Golden Globe spiel about Jack Abramoff inappropriate and immature.

The one thing that does make me wary of Mel Gibson is something I remember hearing that may not even be true. Did he claim something about the Holocaust never happening? I seem to remember that. I may be wrong, though. I didn't have any problems with him regarding The Passion, though.

Queer Eye is going fine. Most of the intern work has been getting the episodic bibles in order, and that seems to be just about done now, so I'm curious just what we'll be doing now...especially when they all go to Vegas for a couple of weeks. It's been fun though. While most of the work isn't necessarily of particular interest, the days don't really drag, so that's always a plus...Some of the FF pop by the office every now and then, so that's always interesting!

Oh, did you guys see that they're interviewing PSH on 60 Minutes tonight? One of the headlines on IMDB from Friday notes that they'll be talking about his past issues with addiction, etc. It looks like it should be interesting.

I'm glad the internship is going well!

I read that on IMDb about PSH, and it sounds like 60 minutes will be interesting. I don't get the channel that it's on, though, so you'll have to tell me how it is.

You don't get CBS?? I thought everyone got ABC, NBC, CBS!

Oh, and btw, Reese won the BAFTA for Best Actress. Whoo!

Oh, it's on CBS? I'm an idiot. For some reason I got the impression that it was on CBS News, a separate channel, which I couldn't find in my channel listings. Obviously I don't watch 60 Minutes very often.

And HOORAY for Reese! She's been one of my favorite actresses for years now, and I'm SO glad that she's finally being recognized. Next step, the Oscar!

I'm so happy for Reese. She totally deserved to get more supporting awards for Election a few years ago. Genius performance! I have a feeling she might not end up pulling out the Oscar for some reason though. I feel like there's going to be an upset for either her or Hoffman. I don't know. To be fair, I haven't seen Transamerica yet, and I've actually been a fan of Felicity's longer than I've been a fan of Reese's, but I'd still be kind of bummed if Reese lost at this point.

I don't watch much of 60 Minutes either, but I caught it last semester when U2 were on, so I remember it just being on regular CBS. Though, my TV appears to be acting really strange, with the sound going out, so I may be the one not watching it!

Actually, I watched U2 on 60 Minutes as well, but I think that's the only time I've seen it! I forgot about that.

I really want Reese to win the Oscar; I'll be pretty bummed if she doesn't. I haven't seen Transamerica either so I know I can't say that Reese gave a better performance than Felicity, but I've been a fan of Reese's for so long. Who do you think could pull off an upset?

mabel Profile Photo

Oh, I think Felicity's the only one who'd pull off an upset. North Country got pretty blase' reviews, plus Charlize just won. I don't see Judi Dench winning, and I think Keira was lucky to be nominated. So yeah, I think it's pretty much Reese and Felicity. I just get the feeling that they might want to award Transamerica, being "the little movie that could." Though, actually, that line of thinking is fairly flawed. In general, I think the movie got pretty bad reviews on the whole, just a lot of praise for Felicity Huffman's performance. I don't know.

Though, from what I gather on the Actor front, while PSH is still way out front, Joaquin seems to be the one picking up speed behind him, while Heath is kind of dropping out of the picture. I could actually see just about any of the Best Actor nominees winning, to be honest though. I'd almost like to see Strathairn win, just because nobody would see it coming! He was quite excellent as well, which certainly doesn't hurt.

Oh, ok, I thought you were saying that someone else could take Best Actress besides Reese or Felicity.

I haven't seen "Good Night, and Good Luck" but I have heard good things about his performance. Basically I have no strong preferences about Best Actor; I think it's between PSH, Joaquin, and Heath, and I love them all.

Claire, the Mel-Holocaust thing surfaced when The Passion was being promoted/defended. It wasn't him who denied it, but a radio talk show host phoned up his father and tricked him into declaring on air (unbeknownst to him) that he didn't believe so many people were killed in the Holocaust. Mel wouldn't say anything against his dad in public (except to say, "My father has never lied to me.") so he got criticized for it. I'm sort of torn on that - on one hand, it's probably not savvy to not condemn statements like that; on the other hand, it's his father. And if we get into semantics, that could be interpreted as meaning, "My father never intentionally mislead me." It doesn't mean he believes it. It was his stem cell research rant and that Terri Shiavo stuff (which happened after The Passion) that had me going, "Hmmm..." But by all accounts, he's a good guy and really easy-going.

I desperately want to work on this movie. It's the only production company (well, that's not true - I'd work for Ron Howard's or M. Night Shymalan's happily too) that I've ever really wanted to work for.

I'll be missing 60 Minutes tonight since I'm heading over to a friend's house. We're going to watch Constant Gardener, June Bug and Crash. Finally! On a publicity front, I would say that Joaquin's set to win based on buzz but PSH would be the upset. And I think Felicity Huffman will beat Reese. (I do like Reese though.)

Ladies, advice -

http://www.hoarseraven.com/angels_america.html

That's the production of AiA that I'm interested in Associate Producing. Take a look at the site. Does it seem like community theatre or regional theatre? Do you think I'd be in over my head? And does it seem like a worthwhile experience judging from the other productions they've done?

First of all, it's not going to hurt to put in for the position. Always best to have as many options available as possible. HOWEVER, after looking at the pictures from their production of Hedwig, I think I may be having nightmares this evening. YIKES!
