Hey all! Dragging my ass back on here.

Bullet points, folks...started moving into the apartment...Strange roommie issues already (shock). I sent Claire a note about it, but I'll spare you, Tiff, unless you're curious and want to hear my verbose ramblings.

Saw a bunch of movies over the holidays (though Dreamgirls was bizarrely not playing in New Hampshire...still isn't, UGH! But I'll catch it sometime soon, now that I'm back in NY...Well, other than the fact that I've also go to squeeze in Children of Men, Pan's Labyrinth, Notes on a Scandal, Curse of the Golden Flower, among others!).

I did see:
-Night at the Museum...fun popcorn movie. Obviously nothing great, but after a long bus ride, it was good silly fun (and Tiff, Patrick Gallagher was great! He seems like he'd be a big teddy bear. Wish I could have met him...and gone to the big shindig).
-Pursuit of Happyness...I liked it a lot more than some of the critics seemed to. Definitely not Top 10 material for me, but still a good movie. I was really shocked at how impressive both those Smiths were. Even though it was based on Gardner's true story, so it was going to have the happy ending, I couldn't help thinking about The Bicycle Theives and thinking that that depressing ending was somehow more satisfying.
-The History Boys...FINALLY saw it. Went in with very low expectations, and ended up being pleasantly surprised. I'm glad I read the screenplay first, so I knew that it was going to be hacked to bits. I defintiely think it lost a lot in the transfer, but it was still fun seeing them on screen. I had a great audience too. People actually clapped and I could hear some sporadic "whoo"s during Frances de la Tour's big speech on women's role in history.
-The Good Shepherd...BOOOORING. What a blah movie. You wouldn't think a movie with that premise, DeNiro, and the slew of quality actors involved could be so sleep inducing. Skip it!
-Charlotte's Web...Very sweet. Not as good as I'd hoped, but a cute family movie (and really Steve Buscemi as Templeton is GENIUS). Certainly not as memorable as the book, but not as disappointing as the cartoon. Oh, and Dakota Fanning kind of freaks me out. She's so pale, she always looks ill to me!

Watched The DaVinci Code (blech), Millions (FABULOUS), United 93 (definitely a one-view-only sort of movie, but I'm glad I watched it. Unsentimental, and very affective) on DVD.

So that's about it review-wise. Nothing else really new and interesting.

Bump...Hey all.

Some quick movie thoughts:

Dreamgirls: It was enjoyable, but I didn't love it (don't think I'd be terribly disappointed if it didn't make the final Best Picture cut. I thought the cast was uniformly strong, but there was just something about it that was lacking that extra oomph. One thing I didn't like was the fact that the first 45 minutes or so, all the songs were pretty much sung on stage, so when it came time for Effie's confrontation, their breaking into song seemed really jarring (it didn't help that the guy next to me burst out laughing (really loudly!). Hudson was great (applause after AIATY). Won't be terribly surprised when she picks up the Oscar...the only thing I could possibly see her losing in the home stretch is the SAG.

Pan's Labyrinth. Great! A couple cover my eye moments, but a beautiful and haunting edge of your seat fairy tale. It was about the closest we'll get to seeing The Pillowman on screen (I wish McDonagh would budge on this, beacuse after seeing Pan's it made me really, really want to see Pillowman as a film). The end was powerful stuff. I was actually kind of shaking at one point (never really had such a visceral reaction to a film...or was it just that it was going after one and I'll I'd had to eat since yesterday at 4pm was a Jamba Juice??).

Notes on a Scandal: Very good. Both Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett did a wonderful job of bringing some real depth to characters that could have gone over the top (though Blanchett had a little over the top freak out at the end that I found teetering on the wrong side of the humorous/effective line). I'm kind of torn now between Mirren and Dench for Best Actress. Eh, Judi's already got one, let's spread the wealth to another hard working Dame.

The Holiday...had zero interest in seeing this after the trailers (especially the "you had sex with her...oops, meant to switch lines...YOU HAD SEX WITH HER...oops again" trailer...I'M COMING HOME!) I still wish they'd had someone else in Diaz's role, but I liked it a hell of a lot more than What Women Want and Something's Gotta Give (by the same writer/director...or is it just director?).

Then went back to see Casino Royale again...couldn't pass up a 2nd opportunity to see Daniel Craig in all his buff, blue-eyed glory!

But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)

Hey, I didn't realize you wrote on January 5! I thought I pulled up this thread a few days ago and nothing was there! I'm going crazy...I must be going crazy.

Anyway, replying to your reviews (or at least the ones I can contribute to):

-Night at the Museum...(and Tiff, Patrick Gallagher was great! He seems like he'd be a big teddy bear. Wish I could have met him...and gone to the big shindig).
I wish we could have too! I bet that would be a hella fun movie to see with the cast!! I haven't seen it yet but I think my "Emily" (a la Devil Wears Prada...with reference both to her position relative to me and to her general attitude) Trica was in the credits.
-Pursuit of Happyness...I went in expecting to cry, but I didn't gain anything when I left. Even though I knew it was a true story, I couldn't help but find it manipulative at times. And it wasn't told the way I would've told it. But the Smiths were terrif! I wish Thandie was given more to do though.
-The History Boys...Winnie saw this in NY but I, er, went shopping instead and now it's not playing in Vancouver so I'm kicking myself.
-The Good German...Haven't seen it yet - I feel like as a film geek, I should, but the slacker in me thinks it's a movie I'll fall asleep in.
-Charlotte's Web...I'm too scared to see this flick because I treasured the book so much. And Dakota Fanning is growing up to be a freakish looking child, isn't she?

The DaVinci Code - liked the plot of the book, hated the movie aside from a nekkid albino Brit (pardon the redundancy...heh)

United 93 - Is it really unsentimental? That's my biggest concern. I know the context, obviously, but what is it ABOUT?

Dreamgirls: I think I have the same reaction as you. It was entertaining, but I didn't love it as much as I thought I would. Maybe I just went in with really high expectations because against my better judgment, I read all the threads and followed the hype. The performances were stand-out (esp. Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy) but I thought there were a lot of flaws that I'm willing to guess is Condon's fault. Pacing, set-ups, transitions, things like that. I'm sure it'll get nods for several categories but there aren't too many I would root for them to win (aside from maybe J. Hud for Best Supporting).

Pan's Labyrinth & Notes On A Scandal - Those are on my list to see!

The Holiday...I don't know if I can bring myself to see it. Maybe on a girls night in with pizza when we can just rent it and chat away if it sucks. I like Kate Winslet but I loathe the rest of them. (Well, Jude was hot until it turned out he was a cad.)

I saw Casino Royale for my 3rd time after buying it on Canal Street. Nearly naked Daniel...Tiff all alone...it was good.

You probably aren't missing much skipping The History Boys. I'd be curious what someoen coming in without having seen the play would think of it though. I wonder if the cuts (that I think really hindered character development) would stand out more, or if it wouldn't be terribly noticable without that in the back of your mind??

I'd definitely leave The Good Shepherd for a renter. I saw some review that said it was "action packed" and I almost laughed out loud at my desk at work (yeah, I spend an embarassing amount of time reading reviews at "work")...I'm curious about The Good German as well, but it hasn't been playing (at least not that I can find...I do love me some Clooney!)

-I'll be pretty rip**** if Condon gets a Best Director nomination. I'm rather shocked he made the DGA shortlist. All this hooplah about the LMS team (though, as much as I love it, it is probably a bit of a stretch as well), but I think Condon's the one they should be jumping all over. What was with that last shot of Jamie Foxx with the spotlight (got a HUGE eye roll from me)? While I'd imagine he deserves a fair amount of credit for getting those performances (even Beyonce's was surprisingly good), I think it would be a joke for him to get in over del Toro (and from what I hear Cueron, though I've still got to see Children of Men...next week, probably with Letters from Iwo Jima...oh, and Clint!). You saw Letters, didn't you? What'd you think? Super gory? I need to brace myself. I already know Children of Men's gonna be rough (something about a woman wandering around the streets holding her arm that had just been blown off. Yikes!

Ah, Good Shepherd! Oh no, it's boring! That one I was excited to see. Good German looks like a snoozer, honestly.

I think the screenplay was pretty terrible (I guess the source material is partially to blame but I think the screenwriters could have improved on it in various places) but I place the majority of the blame on Condon. There are so many things that didn't work for me, I'd have to start from the beginning and go onwards. I can't just pinpoint one.

I want to see Children of Men but it got mixed reviews. I'm trying to talk myself into seeing Venus at 10am tomorrow but I want to sleep in!

I did see Iwo Jima, yeah. I really liked it, and I'm normally pretty mixed on Eastwood movies (in fact, there isn't a single movie of his that I've ever thoroughly enjoyed). The performances were strong (I mean, Watanabe's acting was just relatively average and his average is still pretty awesome), the screenplay and direction was strong, and it completely moved me. It is quite violent though - there's a scene involving several people and grenades that some people were cringing at. I don't know if it's really graphic by North American standards - I'm really good with gore and blood, but the scene involving emptying a pee and poop bucket made my stomach lurch more. I'M COMING HOME!

-Yeah, I think The Good German looks kind of eh, but I've heard great things about Blanchett's performance, so I'm curious. I was thoroughly let down by Shepherd though. Maybe I was going in with the wrong frame of mind. I expected it to be somewhat more high octane film, rather than a slow, kind of plodding meditation. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with slow, reletively action-free films (say Capote from last year), but I definitely think I went in expecting the wrong thing.

-One thing I hated about Dreamgirls was that they made Beyonce into such an innocent. Sure they all had their little pre-AIATY spat, but is it wrong that I really wanted her to be a bitch? Everyone else had unlikable qualities, while coming out kind of endearing in the end (well, minus Foxx, I suppose). Why was she so afraid to be ugly at some point. Oh, Effie, I was blind to the fact that we've been royally screwing you over for 10 years, so now I'll relinquish the rights to the big song and we'll all come together for one big singalong at the end. Am I really supposed to believe she was that clueless all along?...Ok, maybe I can.

-I haven't checked out Rotten Tomatoes to see what the overall consensus has been on Children of Men, but the few I have read seem positive to raves. I'm defintely curious. A friend of mine saw it last week and said it was incredibly difficult to sit through, but excellent.

-I'm kind of unpredictable about violence in film. I'm definitely not a fan of horror movies, but if the film is good I'm generally okay with it. As far as Eastwood goes. I haven't seen Flags or (obviously) Letters yet. I was kind of on the fence about Mystic River. I definitely didn't love it (thought Penn was WAY over the top), but I'd rather have seen that win some major awards than had Return of the King sweep. And I did like Million Dollar Baby. I can see why many didn't, but I didn't think The Aviator was any great shakes either, so it didn't really break my heart that that lost out anyway.

-Oh, and I forgot...I did think United 93 was did a fairly good job at being unsentimental. It almost felt more like the camera was more like a fly on the wall, than a vessel for creating sappy (can you hear the strings) glory shots. I think the choice to go with reletively no-name actors was a smart choice.

And yeah, Winslet's defintiely the one out of The Holiday lot that I really enjoy. I do kind of like Jude Law though. There's something about his lack of shame in becoming weepy and pathetic that I weirdly enjoy (his sniveling mess of a scene with Clive Owen in Closer comes across more "I don't care how pathetic I look" than "hey look at me, I'm such a great, ego-free actor that I'm willing to sacrifice my looks and go there".) I don't think I've done a good job of making the distinction, but it makes sense to me. He's not a faavorite by any means, but I like him well enough...Definitely don't care for Diaz, and I don't think Black's very successful in his attempt to play it "serious."

Hey gals! I found this thread with tons of movie reviews to read, so I kinda skimmed. I saw Notes on a Scandal this weekend and really enjoyed it; great performances from everyone. For some reason I got hooked on Dreamgirls more than you two did, and I'm not sure I can explain why I loved it. It just made me want to applaud. I want to see Children of Men but I think I'll have to wait 'til it's on video. I don't mind waiting to see Letters from Iwo Jima, The Holiday, The History Boys, The Good Shepherd, and The Good German on video either. There are just too many movies to see.

What are your predictions?

SO excited about the Golden Globes. I need to head out of the city early enough to be back in time for trashy Red Carpet stuff! Who's E! got this year? Is it Mizrahi again? He did seem to be more toned down after the Scarlett grope heard round the world, but I still don't like him. Not that he's any worse than Star Jones (oops...SJ Reynolds) or Freaky Rivers and her yappy little spawn.

Hmmmm, predix...I really don't know.

BP Drama: The Departed (though I'd love to see The Queen take it).
BP Musical/Comedy: Dreamgirls (I'd rather have LMS, and I wouldn't be terribly surprised if it upset...other than the fact that they're only going in with one other nomination in Colette).
Actress Drama: Mirren, duh!
Actor Drama: Whitaker (though I feel like if one of the two of them are due to end the winning streak, it'll be Whitaker losing out to O'Toole).
Actress M/C: Streep
Actor M/C: I'm grudgingly going to say Cohen (blech!...or maybe Depp, since he's been nominated the past 3 years in a row, isn't it, with no wins. Actually, I'd rather have anyone but Cohen win, especially if he's going to accept it as Borat)
Sup. Actress: Hudson
Sup. Actor: Pitt (blech!)
Director: Scorsese
Screenplay: Babel (no clue...I'm still shocked LMS wasn't in the mix).
Song: Dreamgirls
Score: The Painted Veil(??)
Foreign Film...not really sure what to go with here, since they've got Apocalypto and Letters in here...I'm going with Letters, I guess, but probably would have picked Pan's otherwise...or Volver...Ugh, I don't know, watch it go to The Lives of Others, the one I'm not really considering!
Animated:...Happy Feet I'M COMING HOME!

What time is the E! coverage happening? I won't he home until at least 7pmPST (10pmEST) but I don't want to watch the Pacific airing if I can catch the end of the Eastern airing, but I also don't want to join in part way!

My predix:

BP Drama: Babel (but The Departed might upset)
BP Musical/Comedy: Dreamgirls/LMS (I'm really up in the air right now...I feel like if voters watch their LMS screener and Dreamgirls screener within a day of each other, it's fresh in their minds that LMS is superior, but my edge is going to Dreamgirls)
Actress Drama: If anyone but Mirren gets this, I'll eat my hat.
Actor Drama: Whitaker with a possible upset from O'Toole but I just think Whitaker's got this in the bag
Actress M/C: Streep
Actor M/C: Cohen although I would've rather seen Ferrell get it
Sup. Actress: Jennifer Hudson and I can't wait!
Sup. Actor: Jack, possible Eddie as an upset but I think Jack
Director: Scorsese
Screenplay: Babel
Song: Dreamgirls
Score: Er, The Da Vinci Code but I really haven't a clue
Foreign Film: I'm so torn. I think when people watch Iwo Jima, they think of it as an American film simply because it's Eastwood, so they'll find it hard to compare to Volver or Pan's. I think Volver had a lot of early buzz but Pan's took over. But I also think voters would've put Iwo Jima into the Best Pic category if it qualified. So if they're as conflicted as me, they won't know which way to go. I'll say Iwo Jima or Pan's.
Animated: Happy Feet. Maybe a Cars upset but I think they'll go for the penguins. I'M COMING HOME!

E!'s website says that their coverage starts at 6, but that's probably mostly recap stuff on the nominations and stupid other banter about fashion trends. I doubt the actual interviews will start before 7 (at least not with people of interest).

I'm a bit up in the air about BP Drama. I could see Babel winning, since it has the most nominations, but the response to it has been so mixed, I'd be pretty surprised to see it win. It's so strange not to have a real front runner for Best Picture. The Oscars should be intersting.

And I'm also kind of torn with my prediction of Pitt for Supporting Actor. Personally, I don't think he has much business being nominated, but I feel like it's going to him for some reason. I really don't want Nicholson and his scenery chewing fangs to win it though. It was just Nicholson doing Nicholson again (albeit it slightly more cracked out with an iffy Boston accent).

Actually, I really hate their lineup for Best Supporting Actor. While I've heard great things about Affleck in Hollywoodland (I still haven't seen it), I don't understand how he and Pitt are in there over Jackie Earl Haley, Michael Sheen, Alan Arkin, Djimon Hounsou, and Steve Carell. Even though I'd bump Nicholson too, he's got the nomination sewn up, and even though I probably wouldn't have nominated him, I can't begrudge some Wahlburg love. I've also gotta say I'm shocked that James McAvoy is getting zero attention for Last King of Scotland. Even though the Lead/Supporting placement would be debatable, I thought he gave a pretty damn good performance. He should have at least been a blip on the radar at some point, I think.

Bump!

Nothing to say really, but this thread was buried so I thought I'd dig it up. Student teaching is exhausting me; it sucks out all of my energy and brainpower.

Any beastly student confrontations yet? Did you finally get a better idea what you're going to be teaching this semester?

Just read Billy Crudup and Claire Danes split before the holidays (apparently she's moved right on to Hugh Dancy).

Nothing new here. We got a bit of snow this afternoon, and it's been FREEZING all week. Brrrr! Winter's finally here.

The weather's the same here. It started to snow today and the kids went crazy, hoping they would get out of school early. Of course it didn't even stick and they were disappointed. No crazies so far, although there are definitely some with distinct personalities! I'll have more than my fair share of class clowns, which I actually think will be fun although it will make things challenging for me. I've got my first unit outlined and have been working on lesson plans.

I hadn't heard about Billy Crudup and Claire Danes splitting up, that's too bad. I thought they were cute together.

ETA: Ha! I just found this article on Hugh Dancy/Claire Danes. I'm not sure how reliable it is, but if it's remotely true Dancy seems pretty sketchy.

Sounds like monsieur Dancy likes to party hearty!...I miss not having my theatre "in" from ushering so I could get some (quasi)reliable dirt. Scuttlebut I read had Crudup calling it quits after she was pushing marriage. Then there was something else about him being on reasonably better terms with MLP (which would be nice for the little kiddo).

Sounds like (even though it's been tiring) things have been going pretty well at work thus far. It is rough having to haul your ass out of bed early when you're used to sleeping in. I'm not sure what your class schedule was usually like, but I never had a class before 10am, so having to get up to be at work for 8 kind of blows, since that's when I'd usually be waking up.

Bump!

So...those Oscar noms. Thoughts? Y'all may have commented elsewhere, but I haven't read any Oscar threads. I know you folks weren't crazy about Dreamgirls, but I can't believe it didn't get a best picture nod. I am happy about Little Miss Sunshine's nominations (congrats to Alan Arkin and Abigail Breslin!), although I'm surprised it was left out of the director race. And I haven't seen Half Nelson, but from what I've heard Ryan Gosling deserved to be in the best actor category. I'm not sorry to see Brad Pitt's name missing from the supporting actors.

Honestly, I was kind of giddy when Dreamgirls wasn't announced. Sorry! I dunno. It was just OK to me. It's not even in my top 10 of the year; neither is Letters for that matter, but I think it's at least more ambitious. I'd rather have seen Children of Men, Little Children, or Pan's in there (though they'd all be taking that last slot for me...no maybe not. I wasn't that gaga over Bable either.

I know it's not the movie itself's fault, but frankly, I'm so sick of being beaten over the head with Dreamgirls hooplah. The night after the Golden Globes, there was an ad for it literally during every commercial break. ENOUGH!

The one thing I really like about the nominations (and I hope studios take note of this) is that, other than Letters, every one of the nominees was released in July-October. I wish they wouldn't just assume that they can hang on to their biggies until the last week or so, and just expect them to get in there as a BP nominee.

Ok, some other thoughts. I have no problem with Brad not making the cut. I'm generally not a huge fan, though I do think this was some of his better work. There were already others that got left off the list (another LMS guy, Michael Sheen from The Queen, James McAvoy in The Last King of Scotland, hell, even Sergi Lopez in Pan's or Ben Affleck for Hollywoodland). I'm very glad this list is a departure from the Departed-heavy Golden Globes list! So glad Nicholson didn't make it!!

What else? Less than thrilled about Dreamgirls' THREE Best Song nominations (love how they're going to ride on their "most nominated" bit, even though almost half of them are in that category!). I really wish "Till the End of Time" from LMS had gotten in there.

I was rather shocked that Volver was left out. I'm not an Almodovar addict or anything, but I enjoyed it (and it kind of pisses me off that now I don't think I'll get to see all the nominees, and that would have been a first for me!).

Guess that's about it. My biggies to see are Venus (which I'll probably see this weekend), Blood Diamond, and I'll definitely be sure to rent Half Nelson when it's released in a couple weeks. I suppose I should probably rent Cars too (and Jesus Camp...I don't think any of the other docs are available; I saw An Inconvenient Truth). Then, I'll officially be all movie'd out!!! I'M COMING HOME!

You've seen many more than me! I've only seen one best picture nominee, and I'm sure I won't get to any of the others before the Oscars. I know I really don't have a right to complain about anything because I've seen so few of this year's nominees. But of course that's not stopping me. I'M COMING HOME!

How's life, work, etc.? Is it really cold there?

What do you mean? You have as much right to complain as the next person. I'm the queen of "let me bitch." Doesn't mean things might not shift around for you when stuff starts coming out on DVD (The Departed and Babel will both be out before the Oscars)...and you very well may stay put on your picks. It's not like there's any right or wrong here. There are plenty of people who were on the Oscars thread who've seen most of the nominees who loved Dreamgirls and were less than thrilled about it's omission.

I'm kind of excited because I read that last year they had a screening (in NYC and LA) of all the Animated and Feature Shorts, so I hope I can go to that this year (wish I'd known about it last year, so I could have seen McDonagh's Six Shooter). I was shocked that it was only $5 for both!!!

Not much new here. It's been really cold, though today was actually pretty mild (nice and sunny). Work's been fine. Nothing to write home about. Though, yesterday afternoon, some funky smell started to surface, and today it TOTALLY REAKED (just outside the office I share, but still "in" our offices, like a fax/copy area). It was brutal. People went crazy spraying air freshener, so then it just smelled like citrus ickiness. The general consensus is that something must be dead (either behind the cabinets or in the ceiling...we've got a work order in, and I'm hoping they get to it tomorrow!!!).

Guess that's about it. The new roommies all seem nice (though, I haven't seen a whole lot of the Hugo Boss intern who had his week-long guest). I think we're all supposed to go out this weekend, which should be fun. Roommates who want to be personable and friendly...what a novel idea!

Ooh, roommate bonding, fun! I'm glad that's going okay.

I'm sorry about the smell at work! I feel your pain; I had to deal with the smell of raw, molding chicken being pumped through my vents for a couple of weeks. It sucks. Hopefully your office will get it cleaned up.

Thanks for letting me complain. I'M COMING HOME!

News that made me really excited: my parents want to take my bro and I on a sort of "final family trip" after my graduation and before I enter the real world. So we're going to The U.K.! London, Dublin, and someplace in Scotland, to be specific. I'm already scouting out U2 sites to see in Dublin.

Oooh! I'm so jealous of your UK trip!!! Are you going to see any shows in London. And I'd LOVE to go to Scotland (I'm Scottish on my mom's side). *sigh* Some day, I'll do some serious travelling.

So allegedly The Police are doing something on my studio lot, in the stage next to mine! I have no idea if this is true - I mean, they haven't even confirmed that they ARE reuniting, much less touring, so what would they be rehearsing??? - but it was reported on my classic rock station...and Sting is definitely hanging around. Very curious indeed!
