Oooh! I'll most definitely want details! Pity if this reunion tour is confirmed the tix are going to be UNTOUCHABLE! I'd love to go (with nosebleeds, of course), but what are the odds: a) that even nosebleeds will be quasi-affordable, and b) that I'd be able to get anything anyway?!?!?

I just posted on The Police Reunion thread. It's 90% definitely the whole band on the lot. I actually went onto their sound stage last night and it's set up like a rehearsal, not a video or a recording session or anything. Would they really be rehearsing if they haven't even ANNOUNCED a reunion though??? They're in the building across from me so you KNOW I've parked my car in front of it so I hve an excuse to walk back and forth there!

Maybe they're just trying to see if they can make it through X-number of rehearsals without coming to blows before they decide to commit to a full-fledged reunion tour??

Whatever the case, it's still pretty F*CKing awesome!

That could be it. I haven't heard any yelling yet, which is a good sign. I have a feeling you're right; maybe they're contemplating the set list and whether the animosity will kabosh the whole thing before they announce it officially.

I finally got around to seeing The Departed last night. I loved it. I really hope Marty gets his Oscar this year. And all the actors were fabulous; I'm a big fan of Leo and he was in top form here.

Glad you were able to catch it in a theater. I think The Departed is definitely one to catch on the big screen! Was it rereleased near you, or was it still playing? There's a theatre in NH that's had it playing the whole time since it opened! Geez, it comes out on DVD in a couple weeks; is it going to still be running then? Hmmm, should we go see it or just pick it up at Blockbuster?

I would be shocked if Scorcese doesn't win this year for Best Director. While it still smacks a bit of "pity Oscar," I think I'd much rather him win for this than Gangs/The Aviator. Both of those were kind of "eh" for me (though I did like The Aviator a lot more the 2nd time I saw it at that special screening, not only for the Q&A but for seeing it on a HUGE screen, in a HUGE theater, with a jam-packed house). I must say, one (incredibly nit-picky) thing that irritated me about both Gangs and The Aviator is that they each feature a scene where DiCaprio's character supposedly gets maimed beyond belief (including conversations about how his flesh was burned off by the iron in Gangs and how he had disfiguring lascerations to the bone in Avaiator), while other than a token scratch on his nose in the latter, Leo still had his pretty little mug all in tact. I'M COMING HOME! Why make such a fuss about the damage done if you're just going to ignore it by the next scene when he's miraculously recovered (aparently the skin graphs were seriously top notch in 17th century NYC's slums!).

That being said, I am really coming around to ol' Leo lately. I saw Blood Diamond yesterday (and watched Catch Me if You Can again on TV), and I think he's really coming into his own. I saw that he's playing Teddy Roosevelt in Scorcese's next movie...that should be interesting!

I've been in love with Leo since What's Eating Gilbert Grape?
I used to be obsessed with that movie. I'm glad he's been getting more respect lately. I still have to see Blood Diamond. I'm very interested to see The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt.

I'll be so mad if Marty doesn't win best director. I really enjoyed both Gangs of New York and The Aviator and would have like to see him win for one of those, but as long as he gets it this year I'll be satisfied. I do like The Departed a little more than both of those.

I do like Leo. I was shocked that he was such a class act at that Q&A. I totally would have expected him to get the hell out of there as soon as it was done, but he seemed more than happy to stick around, answering individual questions, posing for pictures, signing autographs...And I do feel like he got kind of a raw deal with the whole Titanic juggernaut. It took him a hell of a lot longer to bounce back after that than Kate did (not that she ever had the teeny bopper following he did).

And I definitely liked The Departed more than I thought I would. I'm generally not a big fan of that genre, but I thought it was pretty damn good (other than that horrendous last shot! What a groaner. Surely Marty could have found some way that wasn't quite so on the nose to end it!)

Hey guys! What's up? I figure I can respond to Nic's PM and kvetch about London to Claire all at the same time!

Okay, first thing's first, I got my Police tickets this weekend! I'm in the lower bowl, close-ish to the stage. EEE!!! "Only" $100 too. (Better than $250?)

Second, CONGRATS ON STARTING YOUR JOB, NIC! WOOHOO! Excited? Scared? Dreading the beginning and end of your life as you know it? Uh-huh! Does it start this Tuesday? How's the living situation? Loving or hating your roomies?

Claire, are you really going to London in May? I'm so choked - I already knew I was going to Asia this summer but I was trying desperately to go to London for a week in May with my best gay friend, and then he bailed suddenly and then waffled for a bit, and then ultimately bailed - meanwhile, my parents were putting my head in a vice and I was getting into trouble at work if I didn't give them a definite answer, so I'm pissed as hell. And REALLY pissed that I don't get to see Equus. That was the whole POINT!

(BTW, love the pic you PMed me, Nic. Makes me EXTRA bitter that I have no one to go to London with!) I'm so cheesed; I found a cheap flight for $700 incl. taxes roundtrip. GAHD!!

What are you guys up to? What are your Oscar predictions? I still have to see Last King Of Scotland, Departed, Half Nelson and Notes, so I'm panicking a bit!

Hey Tiff!!! So jealous that you got Police tix. I was debating and opted not to. I probably should have bought a pair and sold one to pay for them both. Oh well. I just figured I'm not that huge a Police fan. I do so love the hits, but I only have Synchronicity and The Classics, so it just didn't seem like a "must see" for me. I figured if I couldn't even get my ass to The Who this time around, I probably shouldn't be shelling out the cash for The Police.

The apartment and roommates are just fine (from what I see of them!). I'm definitely looking forward to making the final/official move-in on Friday! Word on the street is they're giving me a monthly MetroCard as a farewell gift at work, so that'd be nice. They were batting around that or a gift card to B&N or Amazon. Either would be nice (and way more than I would have expected them to spend on me). The other person who left a few months ago got a WP Desk Set (with a pen, money clip, and business card holder). It was about $25! Nice little bump up there for me...watch, I'll be getting my very own desk set (quality gift, since I'd never use a money clip and I'm going our on a limb guessing I won't be getting business cards).

Sorry your London plans are kind of fizzling out, Tiff. I'd really love to go to London to catch it, but I know that's just not going to happen this year. My mom and I have been tossing around Claire's May trip (London, Ireland, Scotland) for YEARS though, so maybe we'll finally get to it next year sometime. And in the meantime, maybe Equus will transfer? I'd imagine they'll try like hell to get it over here, as I'd imagine it'll make money hand over fist (especially if it gets decent reviews).

I'm totally at a loss about the Oscars. I feel like everything could go to anyone. You've either got the BP race with no clear leader, or all the acting categories (and director) that have been swept all season, which just BEGS for an upset. I feel like even the untouchable Mirren could lose. Everyone will probably think "well, everyone else is voting for her" leaving someone else with the win, but who? Dench who's opting for knee surgery rather than show up to the show?

I still have to see Half Nelson. I'll probably try to rent it this weekend (and I should probably rent Cars, but I really don't care about seeing it...and Water, though I didn't have much luck with the rest of the Foreign Film nominees, since The Lives of Others and Days of Glory didn't get released at an AMC). Tiff, at least The Departed and Half Nelson are on DVD, so that should make it easier to tick those off the list, right? Good luck! What's everyone doing?

I'm still kind of mixed as to whether I actually want to see the Police or not. (Well, I guess $100 later, I BETTER want to see them!) It just seemed like the obvious thing to do after everything that happened at work, but really, my appreciation of them is pretty limited to - like you said - Synchronicity and The Classics.

I did just get tickets to Lily Allen though - I haven't heard any of her stuff but she's been all over Perez Hilton and apparently she's huge in the UK. My friends swear I'll love her stuff.

So you've got another 4 days of freedom until work starts, eh?? What's in the new wardrobe? Where are you working anyway? (Location-wise, I mean.)

Yeah, I'm getting over not going to London, especially if it pans out that it's coming to Broadway in the fall (which doesn't make sense since isn't that when HP6 is supposed to start, but I trust that the news is reasonable credible). You KNOW, Nic, if it comes to Broadway, ummm...we're seeing it. And I'm likely crashing at your place. Just sayin'. What's everyone doing?

The category I'm most conflicted about is Best Picture. Now I really feel like it can go any way (except for The Queen, and who the hell knows now at this point). There seems to be a lot of steam for The Departed - at the very least, I'm quite sure that Scorcese will get Best Director...in which case I don't know if Departed will get the top honor or if it'll go to Babel, or a LMS upset.

I'm on the waitlist for Half Nelson and The Departed. Can you believe it?? A freakin' waitlist. But I'm seeing Last King Of Scotland (and probably movie-hopping to Notes On A Scandal) on Saturday, so I hope it all works out!

Just a quickie before work.

I'm not sure what to make of the Equus transfer. Part of me thinks it would only make sense (like I said, I'm sure it would be an instant hit, especially if it opens to decent reviews). BUT, I know they're filming HP6 right after the West End run is done, and there's some scuttlebut about them filming 7 alongside it, so they aren't all in their 20s when they finish up the last one. I'd say, if they don't opt for doubling up shooting, there's a decent shot of it happening. If they do, I don't see it panning out until early spring, if at all.

I'm so torn on Best Picture. Like you said, I think The Queen has the least hope of the lot, but all things considered, I think it's the (overall) strongest of the lot. I know a lot of people didn't care for it (especially complaining that it was too small) but I really liked it. I thought the performances were great all around (not just Mirren), it was an interesting look at a very public figure that we also know little about, and I thought it did a great job of depicting a government completely out of touch with the people. I think it's too easily dismissed.

I think I'm going to try to rent Half Nelson this weekend (maybe Water). I've given up on Cars and some of the others nominated for technical awards that I haven't seen yet (Flags, Black Dahlia, Superman Returns, Poseidon).

Ah! Gotta go to work if I want to get a parking place!

I know, it's been ages. School hasn't been kind. And I was away, as it says above. And my AIM is no longer working, and I don't plan to fix it because it only caused trouble and more trouble on my PC. Nice to see you all though!

I'll post my own pictures here asap, but you see they're all on the school laptop we brought with us, I uploaded them as I went along. The ones on the blog are mostly the teachers' pics. This is one that I do have, the one which would go with my last blog post, 'Sunrise, Sunset';

Dying turtles being eaten by dogs?! Eeek.

So what was the highlight and lowlight of your trip? What surprised you the most?

Highlight: Perhaps sitting out while all my friends slept that morning in Puri, looking at that beautiful sunrise.

Lowlight: Digging a 6' x 8' x 6' trench in Diamond Harbour for school foundations, or when I had a fight with my classmate Alice over bricklaying. The heat was getting to us!

I think what surprised me the most was not the poverty, but my friends. I got to know them so much better, and I feel so much closer to them. I've always been slightly separated from the class because I live further away from the school than all of them, and I don't really get to socialise with them because of it (in fact I don't really get to socialise at all).
On the last night, all of the boys (except me) and all of the girls that were still awake got a bit 'tipsy', and lets just say it was wuite a funny experience for me, who had never seen them drunk before. Now, they weren't drunk-drunk, just a little wobbly, that's all. We're all 15/16, by the way.
Well, I was determined not to drink, and didn't. I found out a lot about them in that night, if you get my drift.
It was also wuite painful at times. Our last day in Calcutta was Valentine's day. I spent the day before helping some of the lads to buy stuff for their valentines, knowing I would neither give nor recieve anything. I had played matchmaker for various couples on the trip, and by the end I had realised that the wole thing was uncannily like a rom-com film, and I was the narrator. Twas a lonely valentines day.

That's probably it. I think.

It's the trip of a lifetime! I really think you never truly know anybody until you've had to travel with them. It's like living with them, except within the stressful parameters that only delayed flights, heat and sightseeing can provide! I'm planning my upcoming Asia trip with a good friend of mine who's never travelled with me before. It seems a bit ambitious - we know each other well but I haven't travelled to such a foreign locale with anyone before (aside from family).

It's still a bond you and your classmates will always have. What WAS your impression of the poverty? Most of the people I know who've been to India say it's at a level that you can't really comprehend until you've witnessed it, even after travelling to Mexico and Central/South America.

Believe me, I've been around, and it compares to NOTHING I've ever seen before. We prepared for months, fundraising, briefings, vaccinations, visas, meeting with Bengali people now in Dublin, and yet nothing can prepare you. There are people with body parts missing, people who've lost their minds, people with nothing to lose. But there's something else. It's not the smog, which prevents you from seeing the sun from one end of the day to the other. It's not the filth, the sewage on the streets, the mosquitoes. It's something very different, that you can't put your finger on. If you could, you probably wouldn't want to because it might give you something.

Don't go to India to see poverty. Go to see the dignity behind the struggle.
