I'd like to thank all the little people of BWW and the large people, too. The bitches, the lovers, the sockpuppets, and, yes, the Madonna haters. With me...I mean...without YOU I am nothing! Thank you!

I loved Jerby in Rainbow Explosion, but he's started to look like he's had too much work done. I survived this thread.

You may be passionate about:

Grey Gardens
That yummy chocolate-covered popcorn
Cheyenne Jackson
Champagne
Crayola Crayons
Exploding Rainbows

What's silly:

Toe rings
Decaffeinated coffee
Blooming onions
Cat litter wipes
Wheelies
Pizza crust stuffed with pizza

Does this help?

Where do dryer balls fit? And Patti LuPone?

I don't know what "dryer balls" are...and I don't want to know.

I'm not touching Patti LuPone with a ten-foot pole.

Oh, and YOU may be passionate about Madonna. But just you. I survived this thread.

That might be a good rule. I'm not one one millionth passionate about Madonna compared to some people. If someone linked this thread to a Madonna message board, none of you would be left alive!

I used to be on a Madonna mailing list (!) and there was a girl in Canada who called herself "Little M" who was CRAZY obsessed with Madonna. I remember when she and others tried to raise money to put an ad in Variety when Madonna didn't get an Oscar nomination for Evita.

Well. Jerby, I have an inkling what the Madonna boards are like because I was on BWW when Patti appeared in GYPSY at City Center, the immediate period following that before GYPSY was confirmed for Broadway, the opening of GYPSY at the St. James, and the months leading up to the Tonys when Patti in GYPSY was the topic of 80% of the threads on the main board.

One thing I'll say for Patti: she's never had plastic surgery.

I don't think Madonna has has plastic surgery either. Though it's possible--she's not against it.

I was on a Madonna mailing list in college in the mid-90s (this was before I even knew what the world wide web was) and those people are CRAZY. Referring to Madonna as "our queen".

In fact, my first knocking of horns online was over Evita! Some of these people had heard a rumor that Madonna was scrapping Webber's score for a new one by herself and Babyface. No reason could convince them otherwise and I was supremely put in my place.

Her brother Christopher confirmed she had a facelift recently.
Im so sick of Madonna, enough of it already, JRB why don't you join one of those Madonna message boards then?
She is one of the richest women in the world, she doesn't care if some people say bad things about her, she will never even find out about anyways, I doubt she is reading BWW.

Greekmusicalfan...honestly...I am really glad that you (and others) enjoyed the Madonna concert. For the price of those tickets I am always glad to hear that those attending had a great time and felt that they got their value for their heart earned dollar. Just as I respect your enjoyment...I would hope others respect my opinion that I did not think I got my value or enjoyment. I am not knocking her for her abilities, energy or even looks. I was merely stating my opinion on the concert and how she did not live up to my expectations. Those expectations included how she played songs, her appearance...yes - I will admit that I have grown attached to the way I have become so overly familiar with how Vogue sounds - that was not what I heard at the concert - or how I always see the Diva to appear on TV and in magazines - at the concert I thought she looked less than her best (or what I was expecting.) At no time did I think this thread was going to get a little verbally tense between us - let's all just have fun and share opinions? We all have a right to love or hate what we see! If we all agreed - this board would be boring. Peace to all - enjoy the show (what ever show that might be).

Oh, of course I respect your point of view and I am really sorry you didn't enjoy the show ! She is always feeding off the energy of the crowd, the more wild the crowd is, the more relaxed and happy she is ! It also depends on the venue. She did only stadiums in Europe and I saw her in arm's reach, leaning at the front catwalk barricade with 75,000 CRAZY Greek fans, who created an unbelievable atmosphere she clearly LOVED !! Maybe the show does not work as well in arenas or maybe you caught her on an off day. But I still think it is a fun, energetic, spectacular show, with just the right dose of new and classic material ! We all LOVE the oldies, but she is not a washed out act, doing a farewell tour !

I wish I could be passionate about Madonna, but I started losing interest after Vogue. There were a couple of songs I enjoyed, but personally, nothing of hers resonated with me as much as her 80s tunes.

Wow and people wonder why she left the states!!

The concert was phenomenal (watched it at Wembley Stadium) the energy was electric and the show was a brilliantly performed and expertly designed extravaganza. If you read most of the press for the tour since it went to the states you will see it's all been raves except for the times.

To insult her looks because of the fact the woman is getting old simply shows a very superficial view of how certain people view pop icons, which is a shame. For 50 she looks phenomenal, madonna has always been muscly it's hardly a new thing, and her face looks fine (i know tons of women who would give their right arm to look like her when they are 50)

Enough about her appearance though (i will leave that to the ones who haven't even been to the concert)
The opening was great along with Beat Goes On, The Vogue mash up was stunning and the 80s section with In To The Grove etc was inspired (Shes Not Me with all the Madonnas on stage was great).
The spanish section (especially La Isla Bonita and the brilliant Devil Wouldn't Recognize You) were highlights, but the best moment was the incredible Like A Prayer mash up with Felix, the track was unstoppable and 80.000 people at Wembley went crazy for it.
Like i say, check out the reviews for the US leg and the European leg and dont just post one negative review.

Im actually shocked that anyone could not have a great time at this concert, maybe you have been spoon fed Mariah Carey for far to long lol

No, you've got it all wrong. I celebrate old age. I'm 45 myself. And I don't look like I did when I was 20. I adore old people. I learn from them, and I hope to be one, someday!

HOWEVER... I am disgusted by people who massacre their faces with plastic surgery. They don't look any younger. They look like tightened freaks. And I will hold no punches with them. I will tell them how they look like an extra from Close Encounters.

Age gracefully, and you have my full respect and admiration.

Cut open your face to pathetically try to fake your age? And I come at you with both barrels.

It's my little way of discouraging anyone within earshot from succumbing to this hideous idea that it actually makes you look BETTER. It doesn't. You look like a surgical freak, and everyone can tell.

Let me tell a personal story of why I love Madonna. I discovered her in 1998 when I was 13 and extremely closeted, overweight, and a bit isolated. Discovering Madonna's music and history just somehow woke something inside of me. It's like through her beats and her deceivingly shallow lyrics, I was able to get started in finding myself. I was able to express everything that was repressed inside of me. Even to this day, when I need to work out that extra half-hour or not eat that extra dish or indulge in something that I know I shouldn't, I think of things that inspire me and Madonna is one of them.

I know it sounds cheesy and pathetic and not to mention cliche, but some people read self-help books, others need affirmations, others go to therapy, others go to church, while others hang out at stage doors while others go on message boards and make fun of those that do...I have Madonna's music and performances. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of other artists too, but there's a special place for Madonna.

I mean, I do get the hate. She's totally image-driven, not naturally talented, and does things in the media that are times ridiculous. However, to me, what makes me love her so much is that's what her art is about. It's always been more Andy Warhol than true musician. I mean not everyone who wants to make a name for themselves can be blessed with a voice, but she works what she has and does her best with it, and I think what she crafts can be visually incredible or at least interesting. She works really hard with whatever new project she's coming up with and puts everything she has into it until she picks something new.

Regarding the Sticky and Sweet Tour, from what I've seen on youtube, it looks like a hell of a show to me:

Vogue
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE14jrkaKpg

Borderline
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUds06gLGhU

P.S. I think her new CDs are musically much more interesting than her more famous music in the 80s. Her albums, Ray of Light and Music are incredible, and even Confessions on the Dance Floor and Hard Candy are very well-done.

I also like American Life because it was her first and only CD to not to even try for the mainstream pop singles sound. It may not have been a total success, but I like the singer-songwriter folksy vibe she was going for and I think she should continue on that road for at least one more CD (just let someone else have more control over the song-writing and have more than one producer do it).

"she is not a washed out act, doing a farewell tour !"

Not if she keeps picking those up-to-the-minute collaborators like that Justin Timberlake the young kids are all crazy about today.

"Wow and people wonder why she left the states!!"

I don't. She married a Brit and Madonna starts out her relationships conceding to her man's will. Long before her brother wrote the tell-all, Rupert Everett explained how the marriage irrevocably changed Madonna's relationship to gay men, because her macho husband is uncomfortable with the poofters. A right lad like that ain't about to move to poncy New York City because some bird lives there.

"To insult her looks because of the fact the woman is getting old simply shows a very superficial view of how certain people view pop icons, which is a shame. For 50 she looks phenomenal"

And this is why I wrote back at the beginning of this thread that she who lives by the mirror dies by the mirror. Madonna is regularly praised for her image expertise and her fans are ALWAYS going on about how great she looks. It's totally fine to say how hot and sexy and great she looks (now, "for 50" is tacked on at the end there) but the minute you say she doesn't, it's sexist. Well, ya know, if she were a melancholy lesbian folk singer in flannel in the basement of a coffeehouse writing songs from the depths of her soul and decrying looksims and sexism, FINE. But this is Madonna, and it's not sexist to base so much of your PRAISE on her looks, it's not sexist to criticize them. Even though her looks have always been such a HUGE part of her package.

I am reminded of what Graham Norton recently said of Madonna, "I used to think Madonna was really pretty. Now when I look at her all I see is grim determination."

Which seems to be the last image the Times review from New Jersey called up. And I'm sorry if this is the 1000th thread in which I have posted my "hate" Jerby, but I don't really see how you can have it both ways with the discussion of her looks thing.

Maybe she does look great for 50. But she looks AWFUL for Madonna.

Wow and people wonder why she left the states!

Yes, because the English (especially their press) are known for handling celebs with kid gloves!

She looks weird. She just does. For ANY age.

Look at Bette Midler, another "I've never had surgery" swearer who is clearly lying. She looks pretty good. I wonder if she and Michelle go the same secret doctor.

I really do think that if Madonna fattened up a bit, she wouldn't look so extreme. I mean, the cosmetic procedures are what's at fault here, but a little meat on her face and body would help tremendously, IMO.
