I saw the concert on Sat night in NJ. For those who don't have tickets...don't worry...it sucked. (or buy them at a discount on StubHub which my friend just did for $30 a ticket)
The 8pm show started promptly at 9:30pm (no opening act). It certainly didn't take Rosie that long to make it to the rail in the first row.
The animations from the start were exciting. The way the screens opened up to reveal Madonna were exciting...and then - her face appeared on the screen. OMG I guess she didn't consult with the camera man who shot Lucille Ball in Mame...wet paper bag Madonna...you need to consider shooting thru a wet paper bag once you reach 50. Either something was going on with her right eyelash or something was wrong with her eye because the it seemed to be bothering her all night.
I will give her this much - the woman has energy and kept going for the entire almost 2 hour concert. Way to go Madonna on that point. However, I just could not get over that she needs some food. Her body is SO thin she looks like a starving cow in a field. There is muscular and then there is starved. If you forget what a starving cow in a field looks like - no worries because the visuals on the screen during one song will remind you of what people getting dumped into a mass grave look like, flies crawling on the faces of children in third world countries, etc I understand the need to make a politic point but come on now...we are the choir!
Please, Madonna if you are reading this...put down the guitar. Before the show (while waiting) I was discussing the set list I read online with the person next to me...toward the end of the show that person next to me said "I thought you said she was going to sing Vogue?" I said, "She DID!" So there you go...it was done that bad with her hitting the guitar. I am not even going to go 'there' with the electric violin accompanyment in another classic. sigh
This was my first Madonna concert...probably my last. I did not really like the first half of the show. Once she sang "You must love me" the show got a little better. The best I can say is "I survived the Madonna concert"
Oh and if you are going and plan to buy souviners - bring enough cash: 'wife-beater' $45, regular T $60, Sweatshirt $90, program $30....
BTW...I love Madonna. Was disappointed this is the best she could do.

Sadly, most of your complaints were over how she looked. Ageist and misogynistic tinged.
I've heard the version of "Vogue" you are referring to and I don't get what you are saying here. It's clearly "Vogue" still.
I have a friend who saw the same show and was thrilled. Guess you should just stick to young starlets who reproduce the album versions of their songs?

Ageist AND misogynistic...not really.
Saw Annie Lenox when she was in NYC performing her new album last year. She blended the new and the old with incredible force!
I flew to Las Vegas to see Bette. Love her, love the show but was disappointed it wasn't longer. I wanted MORE.
Saw Dolly a few months ago when she was at Radio City Music Hall. Never saw Dolly and would absolutely go see her again.
Drove to Atlantic City to see Donna Summer on her Crayons tour. WOW...amazing first live experience.
Going to see Tina Turner the night before Thanksgiving.
So I think you are off with your ageist and misogynistic comment...way off. Madonna's new concert is VERY off. The third song into the concert her voice was cracking. She simply did not live up to the hype and expectations. I was not looking for a studio performance live on stage either. I am not one of the 13 yr olds on this board.
Well, sorry, your review read like cliched bitchy comments about an old women's looks. Glad you aren't like that but it still makes one wonder why it's such a big deal to knock her looks.
Anyway, you didn't like her concert. Fine. I don't care about that. I just think your review is off from everything I have seen and heard. I will let you know next weekend.
But I'm curious--you haven't seen any of her other concerts on HBO or DVD? I find it silly to write her off because you felt this one was lackluster. I would think someone who is a fan of hers and knows her track record with concerts wouldn't be so quick to give up on her.

I hear Lourdes lurks around these boards. Maybe you should appeal to her.
Well, I applaud Guitar Madonna. I think it's been a fun addition to her music. I doubt she thinks she's Eddie Van Halen or Prince.

Here's the thing, jrb: He or she who lives by the mirror, dies by the mirror.

With what Madonna charges for tickets, I think it's more than fair to give her exactly one chance to get it right. Perhaps she should offer a satisfaction guarantee to audience members. Or at the very least a reach-around for those who pony up for the $350 tickets. In this economy.

Hey jrb_actor I am not a HUGE Madonna fan. I own 2 of her CD and I was 17 when the "Sex" book came out so I bought it (don't strain doing the math - I am 36 now). I like some of her new songs but not all of them. Her opening act was cool as was the song. Just from the hype that hangs over Madonna I guess I expected too much for her. Maybe I should have given her the Sarah Palin "bar". The 90 minute wait for the concert to start was just flat out rediculous. I was warned that she is known for starting 30 to 40 minutes late but this was extreme! On the car ride home we were talking about maybe in a future concert she would do more of the oldies - then I might consider going. I haven't totally written her off. I bought these tickets before the CD was released and before the concert list was known. Doubt I will buy tickets again before I hear what is on the agenda. Unfortunately, there is no getting around her looking tired. She just didn't look fresh and exciting especially since this was the first night of the US leg of her tour.
I have seen one of her tours on DVD and really liked it too! For me - this concert was just off - hope maybe it was just an off night. Even my Madonna crazed friend who is going to see her at the Garden tonight, in Miami and in Chicago did NOT come out of Sat night's concert with a huge Cheshire Cat smile on his face.

Well, you can console yourself that it was probably cooler in the MSG than it would have been had she been there in the summer.

Wow...I already forgot about the heat! It was mental hot. A friend of mine is going tonight and I warned him to wear shorts and a light t-shirt!
I am wondering if it was just an "off" audience too - several times Madonna actually screamed to the audience to get UP. People just weren't feeling her music and most of the audience was sitting down. Really - when she played her old familiar songs - they jumped up and moved like a bowl of jello the way the lights played off them. But she did get the best reaction from Ray of Light.
I did the math and it doesn't add up. The SEX book came out in 1992. If you were 17 then, that would make you 33 now, not 36.

ok StageManager2...I said I like Madonna - not loved her enough to quote the dates her things were released...LOL I just know I was old enough to buy it. I even remember the store in the mall proofing my ID. I was born in 72. The receipt is still with the book so I could check it when I go home.
Oh and jrb_actor....regarding ageist and misogynistic...I forgot - I saw Rufus Wainwright too. Does he count as an aging diva queen too?
The Times did not think too much of it.

I'm confused. You said there was no opening act.

She did that exact same thing when I saw the Confessions tour (THE very last penny I will ever put in her pocket). And at those prices, she had the audacity to complain that she was working her "ass off up here," implying that the audience should be too. No, Madonna, you have the heat turned up to protect your golden vocal chords and *we* are paying *you*. So, to quote RuPaul: YOU better work, bitch.

Wow. People still pay to see Madonna.
I'm going to see her in November at the Oracle Arena in Oakland and am still very excited, despite the negative feedback. It will be my first Madonna concert.
I may be wrong uncaged but I think he might have meant her opening number rather then opening act. Brian said there was no opening act earlier.
I really find ridiculous that some people are willing to give a billionaire those insane amounts of money, I can pay my rent with us$ 350
and I agree with the poster, I saw her Girlie Show Tour back in 1994 and I was so bored, then a few years ago I bought her CD "American Life" and I decided it was going to be the last time I spend a penny on her.
She is very talented, but Im just tired of hearing so many of my friends supporting her and ignoring that there are a lot of other talented singers, who put way better concerts out there.
I paid us$ 150 plus charges (which is a lot!) to see Sarah Brightman and I got floor seats, can't wait!
But honestly I'd rather see Janet, Liza, Tina Turner, etc before I see Madonna ever again.
I'm going to MSG on Sunday night, hoping I'll be out of there before Monday comes, she keeps starting later and later.
I think there's a time and place for the Liza's and the Tina's of the world, but everyone needs a little Madonna in their lives. Especially when she comes wrapped in a big, splashy package.
Ummmm no we don't!
Then why do you keep bothering with this thread?
Clearly some people need Madonna in their lives--to obsess over how much they hate her. Once again, I don't get why some people obsess over the negative--over things they don't like. What a waste of time and energy.

Oh sweetie....I'm not trying to be a smart ass, really, I think you are a dear..and I hate to point out the obvious.. but, dearest, take a second look at your avatar.

On a different note. I'm neither a fan nor do I dislike her.. but my take on Madonna changed after she swooped down to Africa to pick up a stray kid.
She totally seemed to jumped the shark with that move. And I'll tell you why:
Before Madonna was once THE trend setter...the one everyone was trying to catch up with.. but as soon as she tried to out JoliePitt the JoliePitts she started to look like a follower rather than a pop culture leader.
Just my two cents.
Jerby, BFB is kinda right. I mean, you may not like her* and I may not like her*, but Sarah Palin IS the "Madonna of the Republican Party," let's face it!
*SP not BFB. We LOOOOVVVVE HER!
