I don't mind having fun with stereotypes, but I'm just really tired of the "we're so much hotter" one, because I know that I'm not, and it just irritates me to wield that as some sort of absolute. I'm just still unclear as to what the video was really saying. And yes, I know it's humor.

I mean, I'll marry your girlfriend, but I'm pudgy, hairy and can't think of anything else I'd like to do less than go dancing.

I never really watched those Sassy Friend Videos, so I can't speak for certain. And I can't even put my finger on exactly what I find so bothersome about this one, but I don't think you can say it's playing on stereotypes for fun without undercutting what's supposed to be the theme of the video (that if you don't let us have same-sex marriage we'll take your women because we're more appealing men than straight men are in every way except sexually).

I dunno, though. In the same way I ignore most things that say "men this" and "men that" because 99% of the time they mean straight men, I tend to ignore most things that say "gay men this" and "gay men that" because I find that most of the time that aren't talking about me in any way. But lots of people on my Facebook loved that video, so clearly it was talking to someone.

It's not so bad...but I never seem to be able to watch it to the end. Every time they get to, 'Well...what about sex?' it stops playing for me.

It's humorous without being really funny. Cause a quiche joke might have been funny in 1984...but now? You couldn't even go with clofouti?

It's really a video about gay people for straight people to find funny. I mean...if I were to make a dance comment, I'd go right to a Juliet Prowse reference. Sure, only 7% of viewers would get it. But that's my kind of 7%.

Which is why I find it so weird when my straight friends post it with an "OMG, SO TRUE" OR "SO HILARIOUS" comment. I'm like, who are these other gay friends of yours that make you think this is so true?

Every time someone says to me, 'I have a gay friend just like you!' All I can think to say (but don't) is 'You most assuredly do not!'

And honestly, I've just been vaguely irritated by that video for the however many days it's been out in the world, and I've held my tongue on Facebook because I'm sure I'll cause offense by saying I don't like it or be told I don't have a sense of humor, so I appreciate that BWW is my safe space to release this.

Every time someone says to me, 'I have a gay friend just like you!' All I can think to say (but don't) is 'You most assuredly do not!'

I'm sure this story is pretty universal, but when I was a young gay, in the 18-22ish range, every time I'd meet someone - usually a well -meaning girl - who knew another gay person (I guess it was still something of a novelty then) they would say, "OMG, I just have to introduce you to my friend [blank]!" And they'd have no idea what I'd be looking for or what I'd find attractive or even if we had common interests or anything, but because I was gay and their friend was gay, they would just HAVE to introduce us. And we'd have nothing in common and it would be horrible and awkward and they'd have no interest in me, and even if I had no interest in then, if I was just friendly to him it would be construed as me "liking" him and then I'd have suffer the insult of being rejected by someone I wasn't even entertaining an interest in in the first place!

AMEN Phyllis! I had a dear friend who "fixed me up" when I was probably about 30. The guy she brought could not have been farther from "my type." But we hung out, watched a movie, blah blah blah. Later I found out he was LIVID that she thought a guy like HIM would EVER go for a guy like me. I think it ended their friendship actually.

God the memories come flooding back- a Lesbian friend fixed me up once. When I asked what he was like she said "He's YOU! He is like your twin in every respect!" I was quite skeptical but she brought around a small, slight, wisp of a boy who wanted to do nothing but take drugs and dance dance dance.

I later dated her brother- that was a much better fit.

Once. I allowed myself to be set up once. And the guy was actually nice and interesting...but it just wasn't right. We were both just gay.

It's funny. I know a lot of straight couples who've been set up by their friends. But then they think they can do this for gay guys...and it fails. It's somewhat endearing. But really...don't bother. We have Grindr now.

I was surprised the Marry Your Girlfriends video went viral (at least on my facebook) so quickly. I saw the first post of it on my page, and thought that it wasn't particularly funny and wouldn't go anywhere (although it seems well intentioned), and then a day later it had been posted at least another dozen times.

(That said *ducks* I kinda liked the Sassy Gay Friend videos...)

It's funny--that's the stereotype, and yet among gay guys you constantly hear "why are straight guys hotter". I guess that's a different thing though (wanting what you can't have?)

And yes, now that I'm 32, it seems to have gone away, but when I first came out I always had friends, even very very casual friends insisting I would love *their* gay friend and inviting him to join us. Invariably they seemed to be (to go back to stereotypes) young twinks, who wouldn't give me a second look, and who definitely were not the older guys I was interested in at the time, and it would just be horrible (and then I'd either hear later from said friend that they liked me so much and wanted to know what I thought of them, or that they were so sorry to have to tell me but they weren't interested...)

I liked the Sassy Gay Friend videos cause I found him funny and I enjoyed the literary and/or theatrical references. I just felt that his joke was smarter than the Marry Your Girlfriends video (which could have been a howl if it were sharper).

I can only enjoy the Sassy Gay Friend videos if, while I watch them, I tell myself there's a level of satire involved. But I admit it's not my instinct. My instinct is that the primary joke is the sight/sound gag of an effeminate gay man.

I generally give openly gay artists a lot of leeway when skewering gay culture in some way*. I've also found that I've needed that leeway myself in some of the performances I've given.

*Ryan Murphy is the exception to this, and all other rules.

I mean grindr needs to start looking at its perception to its users with problems and maintainer work lasting long periods as essential as it is.. It's important to remember your brand and the end user who pays for this app. I advise the senior team at grindr to start reviewing its business policy before it looses significant turnover. And I work with Fortune 500 companies.
