I just had a package delivered by a UPS man that seriously made me contemplate offering him more than my heartfelt thanks. But then I worried that it would take too much time out of his obviously busy workday. Does anyone know the protocol on this? And if it's allowable, how much would you recommend as a sign of gratitude for a job well done?
I believe you offer him a cold drink first.
yes. then you pay with nature's credit card...

As far as UPS is concerned, I had heard that the drivers are not supposed to accept tips. They are union employees and I think receiving tips is not encouraged.
DGrant, I know one UPS delivery man who SINCERELY appreciates tips, although mine have been known to be a bit unorthodox ;oP

It depends on how good-looking he is.
heh heh heh...
it's like a bad porno...only on bww.com
catie, you mean it's not right to offer them my "cookies?"

ha. the only time I've ever found a "delivery man" attractive, was the guy that brought our new sofa from Jeromes... it's weird he was close to my age probably only about 24 or 25. he asked to use the restroom... he actually said restroom... he was adorable so I let him... otherwise it's kind of weird for a delivery person to ask to use the bathroom... what the hell...

do not tip, that is his job.unlike waiters who reliy on tips insted of threr salery UPS men are doing there job.i do not see why you would be obligated to tip him.your just a nice guy :)
Depends on the size of the package.

This man was about 6'4" and looked like a rugby player who modeled on the side. I actually think I mentioned something about 'packages' - but I really wasn't thinking too clearly, so god knows WHAT I might have said to him!

Wow, Liam. I never thought I'd say this, but I totally agree. It seems, more and more, that we are expected to tip EVERYONE. Next, McDonalds employess will be expecting a tip from the QP meal they just sold you.
It's getting out of hand, I believe. I agree with tipping those who work for less-than-minimum wages, because tips are expected to make up the difference. But everyone else gets paid to do their job.
BTW, I was a delivery person for 4 years. No one ever tipped me and I never expected anyone to. I got paid a decent salary to do what I was doing.

Thanks to those who have given reasonable responses - although, I can't say that's EXACTLY the question I was asking.
I'm still confused as to what exactly you were asking... you wanted advice on how to bang a delivery boy, no?
so Liam, a waiter isn't just doing his job?
A waiter carries food, orders food, and walks it to tables, and other assorted tasks) more often than not inside a climate controlled environment.
A UPS guy LOADS his truck (I believe), drives the stuff around, then carries it, then puts it down, mostly OUTSIDE, during all times of the year, in all kinds of weather.
So, do tell Liam, who one deserves a tip over the other? Both select their jobs.....no one forces them into it.
And this is NO slight against waitpeople, I totally respect them...I just want Liam, and only Liam to tell me the difference........and why one deserves a tip more than the other.....
*sigh* I want so badly to answer... pick me! pick me!

no a waiter is just doing his job but a waiter relis on tips becouse they are alode to get below minum wage becouse tipping is expected
cats, I tip anyone I get good service from......I'm more interested in watching Liam wriggle out of what he said, as it truly makes no sense.
Elphaba your not makeing sence at all.just stop.
I usually tip my UPS, mailperson, etc during the Holidays...so one big gift instead of little ones through out the year. The UPS guy usually gets more because he carries a bigger, heavier package.
yeah right........meaning, you have no explanation........whatever. And for the record, it's "making sense".

Actually, he did have an explanation. People who have tip-based jobs make less than minimum wage; they need tips do earn a living. People who have jobs with normal salary arrangements don't need tips quite as urgently.
