You don't win an Oscar for being black. You win it for writing a bad song in an okay movie that everyone just wants to hear read as a winner by some old white lady -- little did they know, it was Latifah.
If it works in the context of the film, I'm all for it...especially if it's something that's used to tell the story instead of just tacked on to the final credits.
That said, I love me some Dolly and thought 'Pimp' was a bit of a mess...but in a very fun way.
As for LOSE YOURSELF, it's one of the best choices the Academy has made when it comes to original songs.
Ha, touchme! I was just saying this morning how I wished Maggie Smith had been presenting that award.
Maybe that song fits the movie the best of the 3. I thought that song from Crash was awful.
It was probably the Academy's nod to Hustle and Flow. Howard wasn't going to get best actor, so they chose to honor the film (which is about music) with an award.

I hate Eminem and Lose Yourself. However...the other nominated songs sucked so much that Lose Yourself was like angels singing in comparison.

Tell that to Halle Berry.

So, when the awards go to what conventional wisdom says is appropriate the awards are fair, and when they don't, then they aren't?
Just checking.
sh*t (in response to pop's comment)
I've found that over the years, the nominated songs haven't captured my attention at all. I just use it as another commercial break. Sadly, I was relieved that I would only have to sit through three this year.

Awards are never fair. It's the organization's choice to pick whoever they want and people celebrate when they agree with them and they bitch and moan when they don't.
What's so bad about that?

threadjack: can you guys believe "Flashdance...What a Feeling" won over "Over You","Papa, Can You Hear Me?" and "The Way He Makes Me Feel"
look, lord knows i love dolly, but that song was a mess. what was the deal with all her caterwaulin' oh oh oh's? and crash might have won had they just had the balls to blow up the car at the end of the number.

Like I said...it's tradition to pick bad songs. Hustle and Flow was probably the best song because it worked well in context of the film and the film actually utilized it.
However, I still think the song itself sucks.
I loved Parton's song the best, but I haven't seen Transamerica yet and if all they did was just tack it on to the end credits, then I can see why it lost.

Of course it's nice to see hip-hop finally nudging its way into the fogeyish world of the major awards, but I just can't get behind a song that sympathizes with a pimp and actually means it. Oh, pity the guy who has to sell women on the street. Hooray for misogyny!
omg, plum! he's only renting them out for the night, geesh.
Didja people even see THE LIFE on Broadway?
Man was THAT a big stinkin' pile o' hooker poo.
Just pointing out that hip hop doesn't corner the market on tacky pimp/whore relations set to music.

Oh we know that RobbieJ. There are songs in EVERY genre that are just God-awful. Some of them have Grammys and Oscars!
I am going strictly by lyrics and melody. What a peice of garbage. And please don't generalize it by saying I don't like it because it is hip hop or because it is by black people. The song is ridiculously bad and it is pathetic that it was even nominated.

It's the only song that stuck in my head. I couldn't even tell you anything about Dolly's song.
OKay...and I get "Quit Playin' Games With My Heart" stuck in my head every once in a while. Does that make it a great song?
I could. It stuck with me the second I heard it. Voters unfortunately just saw the cute title in the ballot and thats what they went for.
that's because you're a misogynist transsexual prostitute with stockholm syndrome, kringas.
By the way:
"It's hard out here for a pimp" is now going to become some hackneyed catchphrase that we'll know is officially dead when Laura Bush says it at a White House correspondents' dinner or when Grandma Ivy quips it over Thanksgiving dinner.
Kinda like how even the lamest among us knew the Macarena was over when Bob Dole started making jokes about it.

Just like they did with Reese Witherspoon!

Well I can’t tell you where I’m going, I’m not sure of where I’ve been
But I know I must keep travelin’ till my road comes to an end
I’m out here on my journey, trying to make the most of it
I’m a puzzle, I must figure out where all my pieces fit
Like a poor wayfaring stranger that they speak about in song
I’m just a weary pilgrim trying to find what feels like home
Where that is no one can tell me, am I doomed to ever roam
I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ on
Questions I have many, answers but a few
But we’re here to learn, the spirit burns, to know the greater truth
We’ve all been crucified and they nailed Jesus to the tree
And when I’m born again, you’re gonna see a change in me
God made me for a reason and nothing is in vain
Redemption comes in many shapes with many kinds of pain
Oh sweet Jesus if you’re listening, keep me ever close to you
As I’m stumblin’, tumblin’, wonderin’, as I’m travelin’ thru
I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ thru
I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ thru
Oh sometimes the road is rugged, and it’s hard to travel on
But holdin’ to each other, we don’t have to walk alone
When everything is broken, we can mend it if we try
We can make a world of difference, if we want to we can fly
Goodbye little children, goodnight you handsome men
Farewell to all you ladies and to all who knew me when
And I hope I’ll see you down the road, you meant more than I knew
As I was travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, travelin’ thru
I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’
Drifting like a floating boat and roaming like the wind
Oh give me some direction lord, let me lean on you
As I’m travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, thru
I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ thru
I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ thru
Like the poor wayfaring stranger that they speak about in song
I’m just a weary pilgrim trying to find my own way home
Oh sweet Jesus if you’re out there, keep me ever close to you
As I’m travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, as I’m travelin’ thru
I really need to see Transamerica to see if it had a great impact on the movie, but from the lyrics, it seemed to fit the theme of the movie very much.
