Do you have any understanding of how the world works, muscle? How on earth would the record company "lose millions" if Jessica didn't croak out that number through he collagen-damaged platypus lips beneath Blue Man Group tubing while surrounded by bored women wearing Mom Jeans holding strofoam cups and slowly swaying their asses on The View this morning? How?

Jessica Simpson: Disaster of Epic Proportions?

Jessica Simpson may have a rude awakening when sales figures are counted for last week’s CDs today.

Simpson’s "A Public Affair" stood at No. 52 last night on Amazon.com, well below still-unreleased albums by her generational peers Beyonce and Justin Timberlake.

Even worse, most of the reviews written by fans and customers on the Amazon.com page for "A Public Affair" give the album one or two stars and are heavily critical.

It could be that Simpson, like Paris Hilton, has finally oversaturated her market with style (so to speak) over substance. Hilton’s crummy debut album was hovering around No. 95 last night on Amazon.

Of course, Amazon isn’t the only reference point for sales of pop CDs, but it’s a fairly good measure of consumer interest. Right now, Bob Dylan’s "Modern Times" is lodged at No. 1 with no signs of slipping. The great American musical icon has received countless kudos for his latest offering.

If Simpson, like Hilton, actually has tanked with this release, we can expect serious repercussions at her label, Epic, a division of Sony.

In the last week, both the company and Simpson’s people tried to stir up interest in the divorced newlywed by giving both People and Us Weekly “exclusives” on her “romance” with another Sony artist — the actually talented John Mayer.

But the people I spoke to at Sony told me on Friday that they had no idea if such a thing were true, and that no one had ever seen the two together.

“I think a date constitutes being seen in public at dinner or something,” laughed one insider. “So far, that hasn’t happened.”

Simpson has never been a heavyweight as a singer, but made her reputation as the comedic foil to ex-husband Nick Lachey on MTV’s "Newlyweds."

Like many of today’s performers, she seems more interested in generating publicity than in doing anything remotely linked to artistry. Consequently, we’d be hard-pressed to name a Simpson song, let alone hum a few notes. Her new album, "A Public Affair," doesn’t do much to dispel that idea.

One last-ditch effort has been made to save Simpson’s album, however: The next single from the album, called “I Belong to Me,” was originally left off the CD — it was a bonus track for Wal-Mart customers — because Simpson didn’t like it. But in a poll, fans voted it their second favorite track after the title song, so it’s back.

Luckily, Epic won't have to worry if Jessica goes south. Its Shakira/Wyclef Jean record, "Hips Don't Lie," is the biggest hit of the year. And rock group The Fray is about to break through courtesy of exposure on "Grey's Anatomy."

Well, she claimed she is not dating Mayer on The View today. "I Belong To Me" is a silly song, I agree with Simpson about not including that on the CD, but the song is available to anyone who bought the CD throught her website. Her Public Affair is on the 24th spot on Amazon.com right now, and Hilton, although I don't think she is talented and Im not sticking up for her, had a very nice debut on Billboard on the # 6 spot. Not bad for a debut album.

don't think she is talented and Im not sticking up for her, had a very nice debut on Billboard on the # 6 spot. Not bad for a debut album.

- um brand new group Danity Kane managed to debut at #1. They are far less famous than Hilton. So basically Hilton is bombing.

True, but either way I bet her camp (publicists, dad) planted the Mayer story in People and Us to keep the rumor mill going so there's Jessica buzz and maybe put a positive spin on it. John Mayer has the industry respect Jessica doesn't, so they may like the association. Maybe they figure if she's on the cover of magazines she may sell a few more CDs or something. All the Nick and Vanessa Minillo coverage must be upsetting to her.

Her father is such a sleazeball. He gives me the creeps.

Danity Kane had the support of MTV and P. Diddy, so it's not like they were unknowns, anyways, it seems Jessica made the TOP 5 on Billboard, her debut in the #4 spot.

I still can't fathom why she would attempt to sing, not once, but TWICE, (Today Show and The View) with a bruised vocal chord. That's not being a trooper, that's being careless of herself. The more strin she puts on it, the longer it will stay bruised, eventually destroying her voice and her career. Who the hell is her doctor, her dad?

Kidding! But it really bothers me to hear someone's dad practically SALIVATE over their daughter's "DD's!" IMO, Joe Simpson's overinvolvement in Jessica's life has probably caused her a lot of personal distress and at least contributed to her marriage not working out.

It was hilarious when Jessica accidently said "He just likes to control--" on The View.

How exactly did she bruise her vocal chord? None of the songs on her album seem especially vocally taxing to me. Maybe it's just her singing technique (or lack thereof).

Lack of technique, or the wrong kind is probably the case. It seems, that her retractor state is in the belting/bretahy kind of singing. This means she would have a high larynx and stiff vocal folds. I know that trying to belt without a high larynx is what can cause a lot of damage. That's just what I know, maybe that's not the case at all with her.

The bruise on the vocal chord is an old injury she sustained on her honeymoon with Nick.

She most recently reinjured it while doing a spasmodic facial expression while singing the word "I" as if it is made up of six syllables.

Jessica has taken singing over 10 for years, she knows what she does with her voice and certainly has technique, the bruise could have been caused by a sneeze or yelling for any other case, Simpson stated.

I'd just like to point out that an opening week of 100k is downright abysmal given the sales of her previous album and the level of publicity surrounding the new release. It says something that Christina Aguilera's album in its 3rd week in stores outsold Jessica's in its debut week.

In This Skin, her previous album, sold a 60k the week it was released. This is great news for Jessica, Jessica is Jessica and Christina is Christina, why the comparisson. I love them both. They are both different singers, no need to go there every single time.

The album is a huge success for Jessica when measured against her own sales. Jessica openly admits that she has never been as "hot a seller as other artists, including my own sister." She stated on E! that she is more interested in maintaining a loyal, steady fan base than becoming a mega-pop star. I think the sales have fallen in line with her professional interests. Also, she is an international spokeswomen for many products and an aspiring actress. Her record sales are pocket change. Her lucrative promotional contracts really keep her going. She is an entrepeneur at this point, no longer a mere pop star. She is a brand.

Indeed, Jessica really does the recording, because she states that her passion and her 1st love is singing. Plus she says she sings when she is going through hard times. Jessica doesn't release records for monetary reasons, since she probably makes a lot more as an actress or with her make-up line, despite what some haters might say on here, this is a real singer, with talent and passion. A true artist. She doesn't have to sing, write or produce, or release records at all.

Jessica said she loves singing, so that means she doesn't do it for money?

If she wanted to sing and not make money she would join her church choir.

I'm not saying you shouldn't like her - you have no reason not to - but you're acting as if she is your first born and you will defend her to the death.

And I'm sorry, but she's not an artist. She's a "singer."
