Did everyone see the episode when she was looking for a cleaning lady? Kate listed all of the things she cleans around the house in one day and I was in disbelief. How does she have the time to mop the kitchen floor 3 times a day along with getting the rest of her cleaning list done and watch the kids!? She's obsessed!

Emcee- totally see your point but part of me suspects that a lot of this is put on for the cameras. I know- it's hard to believe that a reality show would do this.... On Oprah- Kate said that she does not run a diner and that when she makes meals, that's what everyone gets- they don't like it- tough- there is no choice- gotta give her props for that.

I'm no scientist (though I like to roleplay), but I wish people would at least start to consider that perhaps this widespread infertility is also due in part to evolution? There are too many goddamned people on this planet.

I believe part of the reason those kids cry so much is because Kate is so uptight and freaks about anything and everything.
Jon needs to take some initiative and tell Kate when she's being too controlling and Kate needs to take it to heart without thinking that he's out to get her.
Marriage counseling maybe?

I've thought that, too. And it's pretty likely. But still irritating.

I have no problem with people undergoing fertility treatments. It's a deeply personal and emotional decision. I wouldn't dream of judging someone for their desires and ability to have (or not have) children.
I think the point of the show is just a peek at a somewhat unique family situation. Entertainment.
I find it endearing. The children are adorable. I find Kate overbearing at times, but I have no idea what it would be like to raise 8 children and deal with the constant presence of an entire production crew...
My favorite episode was when they went to the Zoo. That little Aaden (sp?) was precious!

I love the zoo episode. Kids with animals are funny.
My favorite thing ever from the show, though, is when they go to the beach, and one of the boys yells, "TOO MUCH SAND!"

I loved that, too, Em! They're all standing there crying...

The zoo episode is my favorite too! From Aaden the zoologist and Hannah who loves "aldergators" they're all too darn cute in that episode! I'm so jealous of their "backstage pass" to the penguins!

Oh, and the Christmas episode that just aired, when they have the like, nativity cookies, and one of them runs across the kitchen going, "CAN I HAVE A JESUS?!"

I loved the episode where they went Christmas caroling....that was adorable. And then on Christmas morning...when the one little boy looked at the stockings and said "Which one is mine?"
I have to give them credit for really "raising" their children. The one episode where Jon was cooking and one of the little girls kept getting in his way, and after repeated warnings she still wouldn't move, so he told her to go to time out. She cried and cried, but she listened, and she sat in time out until he came and got her. Such a nice change after so many of these reality shows where the kids are running the families.

I think that's why I am drawn to the show - they do a good job of establishing order and rules, and trying to 'raise' them properly.
I love that they try to give them 'memories' and make life as 'normal' as possible: the 4th of July parade, the Christmas caroling, the 'notes' from Mommy in Maddy and Cara's lunchbox the first day of school...
I think that's why I enjoy it.
(I have to say the show that follows it, with the family and about 17 kids with names all starting with the same letter kind of creeps me out... I don't watch it.)

I love this show. I think the parents are very real - and I like Kate. IMO, two sets of multiples, it's hard to let things roll off your back. She and John seem to be raising very well adjusted kids.
They were adorable on Oprah.

"It also seems like there's always a kid crying every episode."
Uhh I would expect nothing else. With 8 kids one of them is bound to be upset about something each and every day. Of course they are going to cry, they are toddlers, it is what they do. Overall they seem to me to be very happy, well adjusted kids.
And although I do agree that Kate is upright and overbearing, I also do see the point to all of her overzealousness. In order for that family to function, the organization that Kate brings to the table is a necessity. I think Jon's laid back personality complements her nicely.

I think the voice-over during the opening addresses the things we're talking about: I don't remember the exact words, but it says something about it may not bring out the best of them, but it's their family and they do the best they can.

omg, Addy, the Duggars?! I love that they have twins named Jeremiah and Jedediah. Poor kids. There's also this family on Kids By the Dozen where half their kids are named after characters from Fiddler on the Roof. So there's this lot with like, half uber-Jewish names and half common American names.

They're nuts. But their house? Amazing.
Oh, and the family with the Fiddler kids... they like, live in Amish country and they decided they wanted to be Amish, but they can't be legit Amish. So they just live on the outskirts of the community, have lots of animals, and make their own clothes.

I love this show. So so much.
But I do have to butt in. Opening this thread I knew there would be a lot of negativity. Kate and Jon HAVE said, multiple times that they knew of the possibility of having multiples. They said, "We knew going in the second time that there is the possibility of multiples, and that we had to be willing to be okay with that going in." They have never said they didn't know.
Regarding Kate, yes, she's overbearing. But the cameras are showing what they want to show. And cutting in reactions and different stuff together.
I love every one of those kids. Cara, Mady, Alexis, Hannah, Aaden, Collin, Leah, and Joel. They are adorable. Of course there is crying every episode- they're 3 years old. There are ten of them- they do the best they can.

The Duggers- those kids are the most well behaved people I have ever seen. However, I don't think they get out much into the "real" world. I believe the way they were raised and their Christian values have a lot to do with the way their good behavior. The parents seem very calm and down to earth and I like how the older ones have a little one to look after.
How the mother uterus is after all those kids is a wonder...
kind of a threadjack....back to John and Kate plus 8.
