If she was lip syncing, wouldn't her voice have continued during the fall? I just watched the video and I don't understand how anyone would look at that and conclude she was lip syncing.

JessicaFletcher, there's a difference between a backing track that fleshes out a vocal or offers a sort of layered "echo" effect and lip syncing.
Has the full performance been scrubbed? Anyone have a link to it? All I can see are the :15-20 excerpts of the fall.

This is such a silly line of inquiry. Plenty of people go dead silent in a panic. I know I have. A couple of years ago I was THISCLOSE to getting hit by a truck while crossing a street and I went stone cold silent. Anyway, someone please bump when we have a full video. I want to see Madonna triumph after the fall.

Or, perhaps, the wardrobe assistant? I was hoping we might get a new concept than the Grammys one, but I suppose budgets aren't quite what they were. Sure things are shaky, sure the mix is quite muddy at times, but that's still an impressive recovery. Hope she's 100% okay. It can take a few days for injuries to truly make themselves known.

Just watched the video. Of course she was silent while she fell! Who keeps singing as they fall backwards down a bunch of steps? don't be silly! And she had to have been in pain for the rest of the song. Good for her!

Jane - I think Arty's claim was not that she would have continued singing, but that she must've made noise as falling down, but because her mic was turned off we didn't hear any of that. But, as many of us have pointed out, she clearly was singing live (over a faint backing track + background singers) and probably just fell silent in panic during the fall. Or, a quick thinking soundboard operator cut her mic.

The worst part for her was probably after she got up, the cape still on her, thinking "somebody get this ****ing thing off me!" - the rest of the performance woulda been screwed if she didn't get free.

I don't like Madonna at all and I never have. HOWEVER, she comports herself very well there in face of a nasty spill. She was clearly singing live, and she is a trouper for continuing on.

She clearly drops the mic. You can hear it go thump.... She is in great shape, must of us, would be done.. That adrenile just kicked in and she triumphant. Singing live..albeit poorly..but live.

I dunno. The whole thing is kind of sickening to watch. I hate videos of people falling off stages and stuff. And personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with saying, "You know what? I just fell down and hurt myself so please cut to something else and I'll go get it attended to."
Having said all that, seriously, at this point, does she need those ridiculous shoes that were just asking for trouble? The cape? The stupid horns. At least she didn't put an eye out or puncture her spleen on one of those things.

I totes agree, Namo. But it's not in her makeup to ever say that, unfortunately. And while I was watching her strut around in those shoes, doing "toned down" choreography, I thought, now there's a 56 yr. old woman who, in my mind, looks a little old to be doing that. And you know I'm a big fan, but still.

I know, right! And this is the thing, she can talk about ageism and people saying horrible things about how old she is and then she says she refuses to do what others say so as an act of defiance she is still trying to do what her younger body could do much easier.
It's really sad to me that Madonna couldn't find her own way to grow older as a performer that did not necessarily involve ball gowns and the Great American Songbook. But she, MADONNA, of all people, should have been able to forge something different and exciting. Instead, it's deadly shoes and a cape.

Yes, that's the flaw in her professional philosophy IMO. She never matured. She parades around on red carpets with her totes ass hanging out, in defiance. I really wonder how her children feel, deep down, to see their mother like that. I mean, in four years she'll be 60! And far be it from me to look down on 60. But still.
Bottom line - she probably doesn't have to change anything, she still has enough fans. I'm just saying what I think.

yeah, and if you think of it, she was more tasteful and mature in some of her old stuff. Like in Express Yourself and even Vogue. She seems to be getting more risqué as she gets older.
I just thought of one of my very favorite things she's done. I wonder if anyone remembers the section in Papa Don't Preach, when it's only her wearing a black bustier and tights with a belt and short blond hair, during the chorus? I loved that.
