So many hassles with the heat
No one there can fill your desire
Cops out with the megaphones
Tellin' people stay inside their homes
Man, can't they see the world's on fire?"

I'm so glad someone else appreciates "Safe In My Garden." It seems that one is often overlooked, and it's a truly amazing song.
The melody is just beautiful in it. It is almost a sad song. Just the way it is sung and how Mama Cass sounds. I do not know but I just love the song.

Bumping this because last night my local PBS showed a really terrific special about The Mamas and the Papas, chock full of vintage performance clips. I love their music so much it almost hurts.

I adore The Mamas and The Papas (I can thank my parents for exposing it to their record albums when I was a kid. They were huge fans). Cass is one of my idols.
My top five:
1. Creeque Alley
2. Words of Love
3. Go Where You Wanna Go
4. Twelve-Thirty
5. California Dreamin'
I've heard Carnie Wilson say that Owen Elliot (Cass Elliot's daughter) has one of the best singing voices she's ever heard. She was originally in Wilson Phillips, but her voice was SO powerful it didn't mesh with the other girls' harmonies. Has anyone ever heard her perform live? I'd love to hear what her voice sounds like. I think she tours with Al Jardin from time to time.

When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swathmore
But she changed her mind one day.
I always loved this line. I mean, really, how often do you hear a rhyme involving "Swarthmore"?
Adore them.
I love the 'flower power' anthems of yesteryear...

It's probably safe to assume that that's the only song, unless there's a Swarthmore fight song or something. :)
I've been listening to them all day. I think these week I may have to crack out the dueling Phillips autobiographies, Papa John (by John) and California Dreamin' (by Michelle).

I get somewhat emotional during the '60's specials on PBS, and I was born in the '80's. I always wanted to live in those times ... so much fun; being at the forefront of legendary pioneering artists like The Who, Clapton (anybody else also get emotional while watching that Blind Faith concert on PBS? During the '70's, but still ... Clapton began way earlier), Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Hendrix, Bob Dylan, etc, etc. It is so amazingly awesome seeing those people in their teens and 20's rockin out/dancin in like Golden Gate Park ... it really does bring a tear to my eye. A much simpler time. Society was a lot less harsh and complicated; it was the simple American way of life.
Huge fan of Mamas and the Papas ... one of the greatest musical groups ever, IMO.

I read a semi-recent interview (but pre-Denny Doherty's death) interview with Michelle, in which she mentioned the deal was being finalized to make a movie out of their story. I have no idea if it will actually come to fruition, but I always thought their story would make a great movie.

A few years back, I thought Gwyneth Paltrow might have made a good Michelle, but I think she's probably too old now, as Michelle was so young (and looked so young) during their heyday.
Michelle said in the article that she felt that it would have to be unknowns. I wonder, with her being the last survivor, if she'd have more control over the project. I'm not holding my breath over it, but it's still something I'd love to see.

Chynna is probably too old to play Michelle now, too, though it might add some cachet to have the daughter of a founding member in the film. I don't quite know how they'll capture that spectacular sound again...they'll have to do a search for talented unknowns!

I agree that if the movie would have been made a while back, Chynna would have been eerily perfect, although there's a certain creepiness to the thought of playing your mother cheating on your father.
Should the movie be made, one would think the only way to do it would be to have the actors perform to the Mamas and the Papas original tracks. I can't imagine trying to recreate that sound with others. If you've ever heard "The Mamas and the Papas" circa the early and mid 80s, you'll know what I mean. There was a time when Spanky McFarlane of Spanky and Our Gang (Singer of "Sunday Will Never Be the Same," not to be confused with the little boy from the Little Rascals) was singing Cass's parts and a time when Mackenzie Phillips sang Michelle's. Honestly, they're not bad, but they in no way compare to the magic of the original four.
Denny was such a hottie back in the day. R.I.P.
