This was posted on another message board site and led to some interesting conversation about our standards of beauty. The women pictured here are the very ones that set the standards for sexual attractiveness and the standards that other women feel they have to live up to. Yet, each them, caught on camera without the srevices of a professional hairdresser and make up artist, are all very average looking women.

So, they are unable to live up to the standards set by the fashion and make up industry and society itself. What does this say about what we consider beautiful and how realistic is the standard being set for women and young girls?

Look and discuss:

I generally agree with your post, but I think you also have to keep in mind that most "celebrities without makeup" photos you see online are pictures of celebs not only with zero makeup, but also usually in very unflattering poses.

And bad breakouts.

I've never seen Renee Zellweger look like she does in the right-hand photo. She always looks like the left-hand photo to me. Like she's sucking on a lemon. Always.

"the point is that what we presented on TV, movies and print is an illusion. "

TV AND MOVIES AREN'T REAL?????????

isn't it supposed to be beauty?

And I agree that those are all very unflattering poses. Lisa Kudrow for instance, she was probably just scrunching her face.

I'm sorry but the notion that people look better on TV and movies because they have make-up and lighting and cameras to make them look better goes in the 'duuuuuuuuhhhhhhhh' category of knowledge.

But this isn't about Photoshop, it's about makeup. I realize the point of this thread and don't need it pointed out to me. I was simply agreeing that they are mostly bad poses and that it looks like many of them are in mid breakout. If a celebrity had the kind of acne shown in some of those photos all of the time, there would be no way to cover it. And the most beautiful people I know look ridiculous when making a weird face. As for the "illusion" of TV, that's a dead horse that has been over beaten. Considering the average size of a woman in the US is 12/14 and most of those women are a size 2, I agree that it should be filed in the "duh" category.

How dare celebrities look normal without makeup on! Because we know that all regular normal people look fine without makeup on.

This thread is ridiculous and pointless. You can take an ugly picture of anyone.

And speak for yourself; these women aren't my standards for personal beauty, makeup or no. Updated On: 8/22/06 at 11:46 PM

I think the point of this thread is that the women who perpetrate the myth of the Hollywood glamour machine can't even live up to it. Yes, they are unflattering pictures and we all get caught in that horrible facial expression from time to time, but even without the scrunched and twisted expressions these women are rather plain and simple looking.
Of course this is nothing new, but in a time when girls starve themselves so they can look pencil thin it's nice to see the other side. They say that Oprah can go shopping on the Mag Mile without getting mobbed by fans because no one recognizes her without all the help of a hair, make-up and lighting crew.

However, when I go to the movies I want to see pretty people.
If I want to see ugly people I will go to a Nascar race.

PEACE.

I think Halle Berry is pretty much gorgeous even in the 'no makeup' picture.

Halle is simply... wow. Even without make up she still looks good. She could go around totting around in a paper bag and still look great.

Is this like one of those semi-identical drawings where you have to find the differences in each?

A lot of those people do look better but, were photographed at bad angles. Halle still looks great without make-up.

I think part of Halle's thing is that she's smiling in her non-makeup picture. I think most of those ladies would still look pretty if they were smiling as well. But yes, Halle Berry is beautiful.

Agree about halle - she's lucky to look so pretty with no makeup on.

However, don't most women look better with makeup on? Is this such a scandal? I mean, I spend the time every morning before work to put make up on. Why? Because I like the way it makes me look. What's wrong with knowing celebrities look better with their hair combed and their make-up on? I think most "average" women also fall into the same boat.
