So far I am liking it. Yeah, it has the SNL feel but it is live to tap. They can go back and redo things. I want to see how everything develops as they do the next 5 (8?) shows.
The Steve Harvey was funny. I loved Miley. I always like Jiminy Glick. I also thought the Tom Hanks thing was funny.
I missed the Tom Hanks bit, must have been at the top of the show. The Shuffle Along Tap number was pretty awesome. I cannot believe how big that very tiny studio appears!
Yea, the Tom Hanks bit was first thing, so great! Just watched it on Hulu. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It put the happy bubbles in my belly. Not sure what that means, but yea, I loved it. Reminded me of really good classic SNL plus The Carol Burnett Show, but delightfully its own thing too. I really hope it does well.
I really liked the Civil War sketch. The SNL influence is very pronounced, not that that's a bad thing, and it's a given thanks to its pedigree. Looking forward to seeing the show find its own identity-- I've said it before, but I really think the old fashioned variety show is prime for a revival in this multimedia landscape. They just have to stick the landing, and I think Maya and Marty are off to a good start!
I would like s=to see lesser know acts. So many people broke into show biz by being on those variety shows. Yes, they had big stars but they also had up and comers. They also need more dancing. Perhaps along the line of The Solid Gold Dancers.
It does come off a little like SNL "lite"..... which is not a problem for me.
I had quite a few LOL moments as I was watching, and I feel that they are steering the show in the right direction for a what a variety show in 2016 needs to be. It had all the aspects of old variety shows: a little fun, a little zany, great guest spots, and a fantastic performance by Shuffle Along.
I hope the ratings are good for this, because I'm really enjoying it.
Plus, Maya Rudolph has NEVER not been able to make me laugh. Never.
^Maybe they'll get Carmen to sing with Steve Martin backing her up on the banjo next week.
I really loved Maya's pilot episode for the show. When they announced short would co-host I was a bit skeptical and felt NBC would ann curry maya. I know that's a little too far, but I felt like this show was supposed to be Maya's. Though last night short won me over and they seemed to have really great chemistry. I hope it does well!
I think from the original pilot from two years ago, they saw though good, Maya needed some complementary contrast. Martin Short is great in small doses ( he was the only brilliant spark in Mulaney). I thought from the start that they were a brilliant paring.
The show did really solid in the ratings. 1.5 demo, 6.4 million households. It will be interesting to see what next week's episode will bring.
I actually like Martin Short so I'm glad he's the co host. And I love Maya, so I'm right on with this show.
It feels like SNL because the transitions (or lack of there of) between segments, musical numbers and skits are very much the same. I actually feel the show could use a little warmth and it would be fun to see them cultivate a regular supporting cast. Part of what I was sensing might have to do with the fact that some segments were not live.
I agree, the still photo bumpers are exactly the same as SNL's and should go. They do have to open their talent pool up to others then SNL Alumni and regulars. Keenan and Kate showing up on the show didn't help the SNL Lite feel. I think however they are much closer to a Variety Show then that Neil Patick Harris abortion.
I thought the skits were very hit and miss, and hopefully they'll be tightened up more (the Civil War and Tom Hanks sketches were the strongest, since they were the only sketches that had a clear and consistent driving joke that could sustain them).
That being said, the musical performances were great and Maya and Marty are both charismatic entertainers. I hope it can find its footing a bit more and tighten up because the potential is great.
I was at the monologue taping today that aired tonight! I've loved Maya for a long time and this was my first time seeing her live - she is super brilliant!! Just the little stuff she does makes her so much funnier. And that Beyoncé number was hysterical live! She seems really nice to. Her and Marty talked to the audience a lot before after and in between takes. Maya interacted with the audience a lot. I want to try to attend the taping on Thursday when they tape next week's show. I don't have cable here, who are the next guests?
Interesting. They had a different monologue they taped when they taped the rest of the show. It really bombed. Guess this is why they are going live to tape. You can go back and redo things. I find that the show ends uploading some of it's "danger" not being live.
I missed the first episode, but I enjoyed the episode I saw last night. Yes, maybe it's not as "dangerous" as SNL, but the form is looser and a little quirkier. I don't feel the same formalist structure to the show the way I do watching SNL; rather, last night's episode had a few different bits that SNL would have used only as an Opening Monologue- in fact, the Steve Martin and Martin Short duet is a variation on their series of opening monologues in which Steve lords it over Marty on SNL.
I thought last night's episode was terrific. I enjoyed every skit. So glad I'm getting see how enormously talented Maya is. She can do everything!
My favorite last night was the restaurant skit. Hysterical! Especially since I just saw American Psycho.
This proves Maya can do anything at all. How has no-one offered her a FUNNY GIRL revival? She's custom-made for it!
I really enjoyed this episode too. I laughed out loud several times at the skits. Guest stars were great. Maya and Tina and those stools cracked me up. Loving this show, even if I do keep forgetting to watch it on Tuesday nights. Watched again on Hulu yesterday. :)
I loved the medley that Maya did with Tina Fey. Especially the Joni Mitchell part.

Is there anything Maya can't do? She was stellar in last night's opening skit, as the Latina show host. I also saw last night that she outshines Marty in most everything. Except in Jiminy Glick. I LOL each time I see that skit. The construction worker skit was long and not funny at all.
I figured this is a good place to talk about Maya's new commercial for feminine care products, because it's perhaps the greatest commercial ever.

I have really been enjoying this show. Is it doing well enough to get picked up?
I loved Ceciliy Strong there last night too!
Dame, we haven't heard yet. Might be that these six episodes will be it for this summer, we will see if it will be picked up for next summer.
