This is ridiculous. We had pictures and word docs saved on there for YEARS. We figured we'd at LEAST get a warning if something happened - to just LOSE all that is wrong.

I hope none of you are relying on Cloud either.
Get yourselves some nice Terabyte hard drives. They're cheap now, and you can back everything up and have it at your fingertips when needed.

The larger issue is not backing up. The larger issue is the idea of "fair use." For decades--centuries, even--there were rules about what was protected and what was public domain.
That all ended today:
* The Supreme Court gave Congress the ability to take works OUT OF the public domain and put them BACK INTO copyright.
* The president reversed his support for SOPA and PIPA--who knows where he stands now?
* The Justice Department moved in on Megaupload, treating them like the 2012 version of the Mafia.
There no longer is a public domain.
That all ended today:

The hackers of Anonymous have already responded to this, knocking out the websites of the RIAA, Universal Music, US Copyright Office, MPAA, and more.
I don't agree with their methods, but I really do think this is another example of people in power greatly underestimating the power of the internet.

This is definitely a huge blow to the Broadway trading community. But also a wake up call to those people that only kept their files backed up on-line. You have to have back ups of your back ups.

I never keep anything backed up online. I just assume there are hackers or that whatever website company I use will go bankrupt and disappear without warning. I never found that practice to be secure, which is why I think the rush to join the Cloud is sort of odd. The Cloud should be reserved for the most innocuous and dispensable files. My company is migrating ALL their digital files to the Cloud and I can't imagine put that level of trust in off-site digital storage.

There is no way in Hell I would trust Cloud. I recently lost 5 years worth of e-mails which I had stored on AOL's mail app. I sat there and watched as they were deleted block by block and there was nothing I could do about it.

Online backups are great as ONE form of backup. Anybody who puts their trust in only one form of backup is asking for disaster.
