Her nipple reveal was bloody stupid, the sad thing is the tour is one of her best, she did not need to do that. It's not like she has not got press attention for this tour, she already p****d off the right wing French (which i applaud) and mashed up Express Yourself with Born This Way (if you think that these 2 women dont know exactly what they are doing you are insane). The nipple thing was just not needed.
As for the 'relevant' thing that seems to be Namo's favourite topic in the whole world. She will always be relevant if the world is still talking about her. It's nothing to do with if she is 'relevant', that word is thrown around because she is not performing power ballads in Vegas and is still choosing to do dance music and look great doing it.....something she has done for 30 years, she should she not do that now because she is in her 50s?
If you really want to throw the words 'relevant' and 'age appropriate' around then the truth is the moment she starts singing ballads in Vegas is the moment she becomes irrelevant (Celine Dion.
Madonna has always marched to the beat of her own drum, some love her, some hate her, you can scream and shout and moan and bitch all you want, it won't make any difference, she will do what SHE wants to do, but yes, the nipples need to stay in the bra, no matter how brilliant her body looks. Not because she is too old, just because when she is touring a damn good show then it just is not needed

Why an earth should she retire at 53? especially when so many people are still watching her live and listening to her music?
This is a woman who has the industry in her blood.
Being relevant has nothing to do with whether or not people talk about you. I think that's where a lot of this confusion is coming from.
Of course it does, that is the simplest way of putting it, if she can still get people talking about her, running thousands of articles on her a month and have people debating her every move and her music then that is exactly what it means.
...but if a song from her new album came on the radio or played at a bar, how many people would be able to sing along to it?
Do they even play her new stuff on the radio?
Could anyone besides a die-hard fan of hers even name three songs from her last album?

Maybe Madonna planned that Lady Gaga tour concussion yesterday.
I think both these ladies are in on the joke.
ANd if Madonna wants to keep doing it at 80- so be it.
I mean...people still talk about Charles Manson, too.
I think my disappointment comes from the fact that Madonna is in the unique position to actually address what it means to be a woman in her mid-50's in the world of popular music. But her trying to achieve some sort of youthful glow makes her seem older than she is and it makes me a little sad.
What IF Madonna decided what the world needed was an updated film of Threepenny and she directed it and played Jenny. Wouldn't that be just amazingly unexpected and interesting and, frankly, wonderful. It may be awful, but I'd love the attempt.
She's at a point in her life where she can do whatever she wants. And what she chooses to do is a disappointment...for me.
The Bob Merrill album is still my favorite suggestion.

Just saw the video.
I think she was totally into the song (I'm not sorry, it's human nature. Oops i didn't know I couldn't talk about sex)
she was strutting her clothes off as planned-- but the nipple thing was her lowering her brassiere and giving the people a little tease.
It was flirty and silly and very "in the moment" of the number with the attitude.
whatever- no biggie

I have never brought up relevance, sandm, I respond when other people do, just like in this thread.
Peoples blind faith in this woman (or any person) astounds me.

It's Madonna. She's gonna do whatever the hell she wants to do.
I didn't say I agreed with it. She's being 'madonna', is what I meant.
And with that comes a whole package of Madonna mixed messages.
I sure as hell do not enjoy anything madonna has done on film (except Dangerous Game)- which was her best film role with Harvey Keitel.
I like MDNA- but I feel a lot of it is recycled 'let's celebrate' songs that hark back to other hits and have no lyrical depth.
My fave album of hers is Erotica, American Life and COnfessions.
no blind faith Jordan--- I just see the good in everyone. Even Madonna.

I think maybe what many of us have not articulated specifically enough is that yes, she can do whatever the eff she wants and isn't it disappointing that this latest product is what she wants to do?
Namo you've articulated it so much in the past few months that I don't think there's any other way for you to articulate it.

Hmm- she has a lot of 'yes' people around her, that's for sure.
But hey- I'm happy she dropped Jaime King for her tour.
And her manager seems to keep her busy.
She has an empire to protect.
Many properties, businesses and 4 kids.
She's gotta pay the bills after losing millions to Guy Ritchie last year.
If she flashes a boob- it's no biggie.
Wasn't Josephine Baker still flashing boobs in her 60's?
at the end of the day- i gets written up- it sells tickets.
But agreed--- I wished she did a whole musical change.

I guess Retire was the wrong word. My post also sounded like I'm not a Madonna fan. I should reword my thoughts:
I'm a huge fan. From the start. I became best friends with her brother in the early 80's and my closeness with the whole Madonna "scene" lasted a long time. I admire her to no end.
As for the retire word, I should have typed that I'd like her to retire the much younger persona and entertain the world in a different way. I would rather see her retire though, than be ridiculed and looked at as someone out of place and time.
Madonna came onto the scene when I was but a wee lad. But it was exciting growing up with her, watching her go from dance music to pop music to something bordering on social commentary with Like a Prayer. I adored the I'm Breathless ablum. Didn't much care for Erotica or the Sex book, but loved that she did it. Then there was the maturity of the Evita time. Even the 'sprituality' of Ray of Light felt like she was growing right along side me. Now, I'm slipping into middle age, and the last thing I want to believe is that, in 15 years, I'm going to look back on my 20's and think 'THAT'S THE BEST!' Jesus Christ, I didn't even think that then. And that's what I feel is happening with her right now. I want her to tell me where I should go instead of telling me where I've been.
If only the dead husband knew how much I've been opining about Madonna. He'd either be pleased or tell me to shut the F*CK up.

I'm thinking he would tell you to shut up by putting together a new show!
Madonna's double-edged sword is that her most ardent defenders are always sure to talk about how "she looks great!!!!' as if her 100% natural beauty based on yoga and pilates is, somehow, a reflection of how much better she is than mere mortals. People who are constantly praised for their looks get caught and stuck.
In 20 years I wish she'd just not give an eff and wear a crazy patchwork suit with nutty hair and present on the Tonys. But I think she's not comfortable enough with herself to do that. And her biggest admirers will need to keep saying how "GREAT" she looks. If she insists on the crotch-grabbing, it would be smart to develop a sense of humor about it like Mae West. But Madonna and humor are not particularly close acquaintances.

Grandma, STOP!
"Hey, Lourdes. I saw your Moms tit last night."
"Oh, you were at the concert?"
"What concert?"
We're all entitled to our theories, and mine is the opposite of what FindingNamo says - instead of her current rut stemming from insecurity, I suspect the opposite is the case. She's finally comfortable enough in life to genuinely not give a fck what other people think.
She's stopped trying to impress people, and well, it's worked.
"She's finally comfortable enough in life to genuinely not give a fck what other people think."
Wasn't the SEX book proof of that, years ago?
There's no need for her to be whipping her saggy boob out. Frankly, she needs to be wearing a better bra with more support.
She can work out all she wants but it's not going to stop those titties from swinging all over the place.
Carol Channing did the same thing on the last DOLLY tour though, so let's be fair.
Carol's FELL out.
Huge difference.
I watched that clip of Gaga's accident. Saw a cross in the background and she was brandishing a machine gun. Looks just like a Madonna concert!
