"I will say that there does seem to be cases where ganging up on a poster is board-sanctioned."
I agree.

See, I agree about the cliques here. Yes they exist, but I certainly don't view them in a Jr.-High way, where they exist to purposely exclude people and are unwelcoming of people, etc. I dunno, even if I am considered part of a certain clique, I by no means limit myself to that clique exclusively. I feel blessed to have gotten the oppertunity to chat with and become friends with so many diverse people here. My friends here range in ages from like 12-mid-50s? maybe, and while most are located in NY, I have ones in different parts of the country, as well as some in Canada, and even one in Hungary.
I've found with some of the threads you may consider cliquey (i. e. the love threads) they are extremely welcoming to anyone new who starts posting. And I'm sure that if there was a thread or even board that tended to be more "adult cliquey" that I decided to post in, I would feel just as welcome and easily like I fit in.
I think anything "exclusive" seems to consist of like 2 people, which I wouldn't call a clique. And as many have shown here, most people don't even really care or have a desire to join that.
Though, Mister Matt *DID* bring up an excellent point. That IS written in the guidelines and I think in general those guidelines are not as enforced as they should be.

Well, I know most people don't like me.
BUT - I suppose I made some friends round here, some of whom I met.
So I think people here need to learn to mind their own business. Yes, one thread DOES affect BWW. But sometimes people think they have a right to go on a rampage after a certain poster, even when said rampage-er has no idea of the facts.
Yea, I know people don't like me, and I know of one person in particular who ALWAYS finds the need to make a nasty comment to me. But if it helps him relieve his stress, more on him. The comments don't really bother me because he is pretty much ALWAYS negative.
But, I think they are some nice observations.
And the ones here who think there aren't any cliques are the very ones at the center of certain cliques.
But, hey! At least BBM didn't win Best Picture. Am I right? Huh? Yeah.

Exactly what I was thinking. Sure I'm in a few "cliques" but I know that they do exist. Maybe some people are completly oblivious?
Just my two cents.

Posted: 3/6/06 at 4:32pmWhat's the difference between a clique and a group of people who all post on a certain thread because the topic is of interest to them?
#80re: Are you one of the BWW Gods, or not?

I'm more referring to the posters on a thread with a topic that is somewhat of an inside joke or something along those lines.
And I avoided this thread for a long time, because I didn't want to get shot down for what I had to say. But since most of you will probably not take me seriously anyways, I figure I might as well contribute.
All and all, this is a very interesting issue.

Please tell me exactly what clique I'm in the center of, because I'd love to know.

i think the difference would be if someone new did come in, and they weren't welcomed. or if they judged the other threads, like "oooh the "x" thread people are so much better than the "y" thread people. the "y" thread people are a bunch of stupid posers." and they wouldn't allow themselves to mix.
i havent seen that here, really, though.

Sorry, that was a general comment.
Shameless - you understand there ARE cliques here, yes?
Well, I said people who don't recognize any cliques...
There are all sorts of cliques, and people are members of various ones.
The biggest is age groups...
There's nothing WRONG with cliques, btw.

Actually, I said I don't think there are cliques here. Just people who made connections and formed friendships. I guess I'm oblivious.

cliques CAN be a problem, if they are hurting people. youk now what i mean? in real life i think cliques can be dangerous, groups of friends and cliques are different things.

Posted: 3/6/06 at 4:44pmI must add to the DC BWW gathering points that were previously raised. It was amazing the balance that was represented there. We were able to get together and through personal experiences with other posters be able to get a much more well rounded view of our fellow posters. Its hard to get the full story and sometimes getting a little explaination of the inside joke or back story makes things a lot clearer and people's actions a lot more understandable.

I agree, Shameless.
A clique implies exclusivity, and what I've found is that 'groups' are formed as we participate more heavily in threads which are on topics of interest to us. They may be defined by age group or by appreciation for an actor or by political or cultural interests. But, I don't believe that the groups are exclusive or that we all couldn't join in on any discussion if we wanted to take the time to read and learn some history of the group dynamic.
It's natural that we would all find ourselves forming bonds with people over shared interests. I think that's different than a 'clique'.
#89re: Are you one of the BWW Gods, or not?
Posted: 3/6/06 at 4:46pmI cliques are formed according to age groups, then I'm in my own clique!

A clique is an exclusive group, and I've never felt excluded from a thread or group here. If you post and have something interesting to say, I think people will respond. But, I admit that there been plenty of times when I've posted without something interesting to say and no one responded. It happens.
Edit: I like what Addy said better!

There are tons of O/T threads that have its usual posters.
Sure, sometime the occasional stray will post there, but the thread still has its usual posters.
The difference is, it IS possible to become part of the thread.

Pronunciation: 'klEk, 'klik
Function: noun
Etymology: French
: a narrow exclusive circle or group of persons; especially : one held together by common interests, views, or purposes
By definition, this ENTIRE board is a clique. We are all here because of a common interest: theater. We are all either performers, techs, or just love to attend. And in the grand scheme of things, we are a pretty narrow and exclusive group of people.
NOW, there are people I 'click' with. There are threads I hang out in more. And yes, I have been guilty of being part of an 'inside joke' with others. BUT I don't think I have EVER been a part of a thread that no one was welcome to join in. Threads automatically become 'cliquey' by the simplicity of the subject; there are threads I don't venture in because I have absolutely no interest... does that make the people that participate in that thread a clique that I should feel excluded from?
And then there are the 'conversation' threads... it's basically the same group of people chatting, but others are always welcome. I joined late into several of those threads, and have felt welcome. All it takes is jumping in if you're interested.

Posted: 3/6/06 at 5:12pmI try to have fun here, and sometimes the topic is serious, but it's still fun to post and to respond. Once it isn't fun anymore, then it's time to leave. That's my motto. I left a board once because it wasn't fun anymore.
