I recently was told by a teacher friend of mine, that a banner had to be put up in the hallways of the Harvey Milk High School (a high school in NYC for gay and lesbian teens) that read, literally:
NO VOGUEING IN THE HALLS
I think that might be not only the gayest, but the FUNNIEST, thing I have ever heard. Apparently, vogueing became a real problem!!!

That's too funny! When a local gym in the predominantly gay neighborhood in my city closed down, a lot of the guys came to the closest one - next block over, but technically in a different city neighborhood. The gym put a sign in the lobby "no public displays of affection in the gym." Evidently, that included air kisses! My friends and I laugh about it.

If you've ever been in front of the Milk School at 3pm when school gets out, you will see the children voguing down the stairs and onto the street. It's FABULOUS!
I'm in Midtown at 3pm, but friends who work in the 'hood say that the Milk students are the SASSIEST!
I was unaware that vogueing is still in vogue.
Shows what I know.
I was thinking the same thing, Kitz...
I see people vogueing all the time on Chistopher Street.
Perhaps there's a revival on?
Madonna's attorneys filed a 'cease & disist' order since she wasn't getting any royalties.... the school had no choice but to put up the sign.
Next week, they'll be outlawing hot pink leotards

Why would she get royalties? She did not create it - she saw Paris is Burning and stole it.

She didn't even do it right. She should have had Willie Ninja give her lessons.
Too true!

You got that right Margo! I just found this great page on the history of the Vogue...
History of Vogueing
Oh, I LOVE Paris is Burning-I just caught the last 15 minutes the other night. I'm dying to see the whole thing again.

I thought this had to do with reading the magazine.
Guess I was wrong.

If you have not seen Paris is Burning - rent it! It's a brilliant documentary. Not that I am biased or anything - I had friends in the House of Dior. To understand that - you have to see the film.
Those Harvey Milk Kids are FIERCE. Literally. Those bitches will cut you and take your money.
It's why I fear and love them in equal measure.

I bought the Paris is Burning DVD the day it was released (after having owned the tape since the mid-90s). One of my all-time favorite documentaries. Check out the audio commentary with Willie Ninja (whom I still see around from time to time and he looks great), Freddie Pendavis (I wanted to cry with joy when I found out he's still around) and Jenny Livingston -- lots of fascinating tidbits and funny anecdotes and updates on who's alive (and what they're doing) and who isn't and some incredibly poignant, perceptive and inciteful discussions about the ball scene, AIDS and being gay and black in America. Truly remarkable stuff. A must own, IMO.
And yes, the Milk children WILL cut you (or at least take your wallet) if given half a chance, but oddly, I still find them endearing.
I just may have to buy that dvd.

Margo - that warms my heart! My friends from Dior are gone now, and to hear that Willie is still around (I had assumed,,,stupid me!) AND AVIS!!! My gosh - you made my day.

No I think they said Avis passed away, but Freddie "See they put cheese on the meat" Pendavis is still here. They mention that Octavia and Junior Labeija (the hysterical -- "if you bring the polyester, god help you, you know how the childen are" -- MC who declined to be interviewed on camera) are still alive as well.

Ah! Thanks for the clarification. Too good to be true, right? I think Bronzi DeMarco is in that as well, I know she is gone too. I must get the DVD, My VHS copy is stretched as taught as Joan Rivers forehead!

i wuld absolutly DIE If those signs were in my school. i am a vogue machine. it's in my blood.
I once saw a homeless man voguing to his reflection in a store window in Seattle. It was oddly fabulous. I wonder if he has since become famous...
