Well, at least Aronofsky didn't write it. That's a good thing.
But, to me at least, this looks like it could give BURLESQUE a run for its money in the camp department.
Whadda ya think?
BLACK SWAN
This premiered a couple of months ago at the Venice Film Festival. If anyone can find anything about what the buzz was...please do share.
I think it looks really disturbing. I'm also biased because I absolutely adore Natalie Portman, any movie involving ballet, and thrillers. So this film is perfect for me.
It reminded me a bit of Cronenberg's The Fly, especially when she is discovering 'stuff' around her shoulder blade.
This movie looks like it could go either way.
Damn, Natalie, you a crazy chick.

This looks like fun...even Mila Kunis looks good in this. LOVE Barbara Hershey, but she doesnt look like herself anymore.

It's like they took my beloved Center Stage and made the horror version. I'll probably wait until it's on DVD though, since one of those reviews mentions the hand held camera shakiness that makes me ill when seeing it on the big screens.
It's not shot on handheld like Blair Witch or Paranormal Activity. The reviewer meant it's just not shot with the traditional upright camera. It's a handheld like they use in news segments, just a more refined type. It gives a kind of shakiness, but not the kind you're thinking of.
SO STOKED!!!! I think this looks awesome!

Thanks for the clarification on that, ColorTheHours.
After watching the trailer I thought "This looks like a really twisted version of All About Eve".

The dread words "Directed by Darren Aronofsky" will ensure that I'll never see this.
This looks terrible.
She has feathers growing out of her back? Surely that has to be a delusion like Deneuve in Polanski's "Repulsion," yeah? I didn't expect that twist. Looks like fun!
Its an absolutely extraordinary film. Its this year's MOULIN ROUGE - a total love it or hate it experience that you will be hearing a LOT more about before the end of the year.
The dance sequences are superb as is Portman. The film is shocking, bizarre, unbelievably intense and I think totally exhilarating.
The trailer makes it look magnificent. I cannot wait to see this. Some of those shots look incredibly astonishing (the reviews confirm the cinematography is first rate) and Natalie Portman is getting the best reviews of her career. I imagine she will be a major contender come Oscar time. I absolutely loved THE WRESTLER, so I cannot wait for this newest project by Aronofsky. Barbara Hershey, Vincent Cassel and Mila Kunis all look really good too.

If they just get the word out on the PORTMAN/KUNIS LESBIAN LOVE SCENE, they will have a box office smash.
Aside from Repulsion, the trailer reminds me of the anime thriller Perfect Blue. I believe Aronofsky owns the remake rights for that film.

I think you wanted this link, Borstal.
I'm really looking forward to this movie just on the basis of all the rapturous descriptions I've heard of the dance scenes. I'd love to hear what an actual dancer thinks of them, too.
Aronofsky just does things...big. There's no halfway with him - all his heroes are crazy people, the emotions are huge, the visuals are mind-bending. So yeah, for a lot of people it's a bit much. And heaven knows it presents a big risk of falling flat on your ass. But I like it when movies try big - I hardly ever seem to see it anymore.
Salon Review
I just don't get it, at least from watching this trailer. It looks like "The Crush" with toe shoes. An overdone "shocker" with taboo (are they really still?) girl-on-girl competitions/seductions and crazy eye makeup.
I know, I've only seen this trailer. But that's all I'm getting from what I've seen so far. A rehashed cable movie set in the ballet world.
And even that Salon review hints at the implausibility and plot holes. Still, he went with it. Maybe I will, too. But that trailer didn't make me a believer at all.
No-no Best12 - its not what you describe at all. Its an intense psychological thriller of artist driven to insanity. Is it over the top? Absolutely. Is it shocking? Yes, but not because of the girl on girl action --the film graphically was as disturbing and heart racing to me as Silence of the Lambs the first time I saw it. In the ways that genre films always tread on ground covered before, yes some elements of the film hinted at in the trailer may initially seem old hat -- but there is a lot more than meets the eye and in truth most implausibility has to simply be accepted in a movie in which the main characters grip on reality is the entire exercise of the film at hand.
Its a totally singular experience = and I do think thats the word that best describes seeing it -- I found it incredibly exciting.
