When was The Wizard of OZ remade?
I never got that memo.
Although, I love the Return to OZ sequel.
(If you check IMDb.com, you'll find out that there's actually 4 The Wizard of OZ films made prior to the 1939 MGM Musical. Plus a TV show that only made it to 13 episodes, in 1990. That must've been scary.
In total, there are 16 other The Wizard of OZ titles.)
How about Porky's The Musical ?
Here's an article where Zombie talks about the kind of direction he plans to take with the movie.

The 1939 MGM "Wizard of Oz" was a remake, in the sense that this book had been filmed before (as a silent movie in 1925).
Oliver Hardy (of Laurel & Hardy fame) played the Tinman.
I really like Rob Zombie and think 'Devil's Rejects' is just a super movie. If we're going to make a remake of 'Halloween,' I think he's a solid choice.
That being said, in theory, I don't agree with the notion of learning more about Michael and making him the lead character. I like Carpenter's notion that he was essentially a metaphor, The Boogey Man if you will. It made the open-ended ending more artistic and made the movie more ABOUT evil and monsters instead of about a specific evil or monster. The sequels lost that because it turned into finding ways to resolve the story, which made the first story less symbolic.
Not saying it can't be done the way Zombie wants to do it, just that it's taking out one of the things I really like about Carpenter's original by doing it that way.
I just don't want him to turn it into a gore fest.
I wonder who will play Dr. Loomis.
I head Ben Kingsley (is that his name?)
I just don't want him to turn it into a gore fest.
He won't. Reading about the direction he's taking wih it, it's obvious that he has more on his mind than just gore.
I don't agree with the notion of learning more about Michael and making him the lead character.
I agree. However, it'll certainly be interesting.
So what do people here think about Malcolm McDowell being cast as Dr. Loomis?
What?!?! This is supposed to be a prequel to the original, but Malcolm McDowell looks older than Donald Pleasance did in the original.
I don't think it's a prequel.
That is what he said it was going to be. It was going to show the time frame between him stabbing his sister and the original movie.
Eh Prequals and Sequals, blah... Halloween is a terrific film. So far I haven't had the heart to see any of the horror films that have been remade. I love the originals too much to sit and watch remakes. I hear The Birds is getting a remake and I say: "WHY, don't you remember PSYCHO?" I find it dull with the remakes, although it is similar to rehashing something that's been done to death too. Ah well, I suppose we will never see the end of it. A remake of Casablanca...anyone??? We could get Lindsey Lohan to play Elsa.
THE WIZ is definitely a re-make of the WIZARD OF OZ. Nobody is going to remake the MGM musical, but I'm sure there will be other OZ movies - there have been about 10 of them since the silent film days...
CASABLANCA wouldn't be remade. Today's audiences would expect more.
More sex and nudity, probably, but I dunno.
I think Lindsay's a great actor. She could probably pull it off.
She was in the (not at all faithful) remake of HOUSE OF WAX.
I liked the original better, with Vincent Price.
"That is what he said it was going to be. It was going to show the time frame between him stabbing his sister and the original movie."
It seems like he's giving more attention to the part of the film when Michael is still a child than the original, but if it's only a prequel then why is he casting a teenage actress to play Laurie? If it was really a prequel that acknowledges how the events of the original film played out then what is there that happens between him murdering his sister in the early 60s and killing people on Halloween in 1978 thats so exciting? Doesn't seem like ripe material for a successful 2007 horror movie.
Ellen Page was one great suggestion that I saw someone put out there for Laurie somewhere else, by the way.

MB--Ten Oz movies including the silent ones, correct?
Aside from the silent ones, I can think of only three Major studio releases--The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz, and Return to Oz. Of course, there was the Muppet Wizard of Oz as well which was kind of cute. And I don't know if I would actually refer to The Wiz as a remake of The Wizard of Oz. To me that is like saying that Ten Things I Hate about You is a remake of Taming of the Shrew or Kiss Me Kate, etc...the two are so different in scope, song, style. But yes, technically maybe.
Return to Oz is the worst of the bunch in my opinion. It had none of the joy that Oz is suppose to represent, and was not anywhere near the closeness of the books in spirit or in plot (which is actually a widely held misconception, in my opinion).
