Sidenote : should the Oscars go to Best Female Actor instead of "Best Actress"? I know it's the nostalgic term, but it's gotten kinda cringey. Going further, why are the genders spilt at all? Tom Hanks competing against Meryl Streep makes as much sense as Emmanuelle Riva competing against Jennifer Lawrence.



End sidenote.

I adore both Alison Janney and Laurie Metcalf, though I've been rooting for the latter. It looks like Janney is picking up steam at the right time though, so we'll see. Still gunning for Laurie!

Janney's performance is pretty stunning. It's definitely flashy but the moments of subtly and nuance are pitch perfect.

I'm perfectly calm, in fact - simply thinking aloud and floating an idea, but thank you for your concern.

I think that given that the subject of the male/female balance at the moment is rather sensitive, putting men and women up against each other in the acting categories may open a can of worms, especially since they tend to be the categories with the most media coverage and the most built in terms of anticipation.

What happens when one starts to win more than the other? What if a man wins two years in a row? it just seems to be a little bit too delicate.

If that's the kind of performance Janney could conjure in her sleep, just give her all the awards from now until the end of time. I feel she is so criminally underrated. Maybe now, she'll be given the opportunity to be a leading lady instead of constantly being cast in the small, bit parts that have all but made up the bulk of her film career.

She has 7 Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe, 7 SAG Awards and countless other awards and nominations while currently headlining a long-running sitcom. I don't know if that qualifies as underrated.

I think she's brilliant in most things she does, but my preference here is for Metcalf. Perhaps it's simply because of the size/range of their respective roles. But, hey, I won't be upset if Janney adds an Oscar to her shelf of awards.

Personally, I find her to be the best actress working today period. And while she's received her due on television, I find her work on the stage and in film to be largely overlooked. Both in response to her body of work and the opportunities/roles she's given. I know I'm selfish and biased but I want to see a slew of Meryl Streep-esque top billings for her.
