Paula Deen Using N-Word and Making Racial Jokes During Deposition

Now if we could just get some of the politicians that have said idiotic things to at least try to apologize the way she did. And some of those radio personalities that have said a lot worst to be brought to their knees in such a way. LIMBAUGH , BECK, BACHMAN.

She needs to just go away. She's lost all sense of credibility. Here is a woman who was given a platform to make a difference and she totally loused it up. First by concealing the fact she suffered from diabetes and still hawking her unhealthy recipes and now this.

I'm not sure how I feel about her apology. It doesn't ring true. It doesn't ring from the heart. It smacks of a rushed attempt at damage control.

I hate when these apologies are issued by celebrities and they start using the go-to buzz words of the moment: "We all make mistakes and I hope to learn and grow from this." It doesn't come off as sincere. It smacks of condescension.

Carlos I agree. I never really paid much attention to her . So I have nothing vested in her as a celebrity-personality. Other than she was fun in the talk shows. Especially whenever she was on with her friend Oprah. When do you think the Oprah sit down is happening?

And, it looks like she's been fired...

First people on Food Network's Facebook page were up in arms at the whole Paula Deen uttering racial slurs, now there's a whole other faction who are up in arms that her contract isn't being renewed with them.

Personally, I'm glad the tired-ass phoney skank has been fired.

Oprah already interviewed Paula several months ago on OWN. I don't think Oprah would take on Paula's cooking show. OWN used to feature several cooking shows during their inaugural season with dismal ratings. Don't even get me started on Christina Ferrari's show. Her career and appeal are like spaghetti - throw it against the wall and see what sticks.

The thing about Paula Deen and other hosts on Food Network or HGTV (or any of the many offshoots), they are not just selling us a recipe or a house. They are selling millions of fans an ideal "fantasy lifestyle." It includes everything, from the magnificent yet cozy kitchen the size of a football field, to those hot guys who come to fix your plumbing.

HGTV and Food Network are very careful (and actually very good) about keeping their ideal fantasy programming diverse, accommodating, friendly, and above all else, "no big deal." They don't draw attention to the fact that a lesbian couple is house hunting for their first home. It's a non-issue. But they are well aware that they are selling their national audience this "lifestyle" that includes young and old, rich and "budget-minded," all races, religions, orientations.

There is no place in their programming for a host who throws the N-word around at the office and really likes the idea of black people dressing at slaves for a big party she's throwing.

I think, though, what you have to understand about people whose family has lived generations within the South-- is that our grandparents are racist. They use the "N" word-- not constantly, not regularly, and usually not to a black person's face-- but Southerners hear their elders use that word. And all one can do is tell them not to use it. But you don't call grandma a racist-- even though she is. It's a very complicated feeling. Yes, it's backwoods. Yes, it's terrible. Yes, it's why racial attitudes are only slowly changing here. But it's a part of life in the South.

If Deen were thirty years younger, I think-- I hope, it would be a different story. I think modern Southerners would expect modern Southerners to not harbor racist attitudes-- or at least to not get away with it. But our elders really do come from a different time. I say this not to defend Deen, and I hope I haven't, but to explain why people, white Southerners in particular, will defend her.

I grew up hearing it. My grandparents used it. My immediate family used it. It took one person telling me it was a mean and hurtful word for me to know it should never be a part of my vocabulary. Point blank. Growing up in the south is no excuse.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

The food network facebook page is rampant with people defending her. They're all acting like what she did wasn't a big deal compared to the joy she brings. And they're also saying no one can claim they haven't used the word themselves.
Uh sorry, never used the word myself. Ever!

Racism is alive and well in the South and calling people out on it like this, no matter how sweet and charming they are, is how things will change.

I have a question.

People keep saying that she wanted to dress black people up as slaves at a dinner, but all I've read is her describing a dinner party where the blacks were dressed in white dinner jackets and black bow ties and how nice they looked.

Is that how slaves dressed? In dinner jackets?

Not that I'm defending her!

I'm a fan of the plant hairpiece she's rocking there.

LOL ^^^

Ya'll, if ya don't mind I just wanna bring it down a minute and remind you that it was a different time, back in the 1980s, there wasn't the awareness that you have today. Even in the '90s and 2000s there weren't really the successful educated Condoleeza Rices who are so clean and neat and articulate or your Colon Powells. Ya'll today are so lucky and have it so much better with your rap hop stars and your clean and educated Wanda Sykes types to give you the 911 on the colored experience. Bless.
