Paula Deen Using N-Word and Making Racial Jokes During Deposition

You're right about the thread title. But I don't believe it is possible for a white person in the US to not be bigoted because it is hard-wired in our DNA. If somebody says they want a bunch of little n*s in suits at a plantation wedding, in the late 20th and early 21st century in the US, I would guess that they have not done ANY introspective work to confront their white privlege. Y'all.

What are you taking about, Namo? Nowhere in that deposition does she say anything about "a bunch of little %&%&(^ in suits at a plantation wedding."

The discussion of the wedding begins on line 4 of page 125.

What about white persons in Canada Namo? We did have slave for a lil bit but most of our African/ population is Caribbean or actual Africa. Nigg*r gets used as an epithet but only within those community.

( 2 b fair our DNA is racially hard wired to hate French if u r English & English if u r French oh and both hate Aboriginal peoples aka Indians.)

I have debated whether or not to post the following. I really didn't want to get into a war of words with anybody. But I am curious. There are people on this thread that have made really nasty comments about Paula Deed for something she said years ago. And that is your choice. I am, really no fan of Paula. What I am curious about is with the word racist being thrown around, then why has not one person, especially the posters who have been on both threads, made a negative comment about TheatreDiva's picture of Kim and Kanye"s baby on the Kim thread. The picture is of a monkey. When I saw it, I am honest to admit that I laughed. But I don't profess to be pure and sainted. If you ask any of my black friends, the comparison to a monkey is far more racist and offensive than using the N word. These comments are not being thrown at Diva. Just some of the posters who have lynched Paula Deen, but seemed to ignore the other. Do you not say anything because it is your friend who made the comment(picture). That is really a double standard. I believe, that everyone, whether they are black, white, latino, etc are a little bit racist. Everybody is a little bit bigoted. If you judged an obese person, you are bigoted. If you ever used the slang "jew em down" you're bigoted. Hell, if you laughed at Diva's picture you're a little bit racist. It doesn't matter if you are from the North, South, East or West, old or young. Jewish or Catholic, at least once (but probably more) you have made a comment to a friend or thought to yourself a racial, religious or judgemental slur. Let's all be honest.

I was waiting for someone to pull the racist card on that picture.

It had nothing to do with the creature being a monkey, it had everything to do with the fact that Kanye is one ugly human and his child is going to be as homely as that little creature.

Besides,I call EVERY kid a monkey.

"When I saw it, I am honest to admit that I laughed."
"Hell, if you laughed at Diva's picture you're a little bit racist."

So, what's your point?

I've used the word 'n*'. I've sung it on a stage, I've written it in a spoken-word piece about race, I've said the word when discussing the movie DJANGO UNCHAINED. I fully believe that if you're discussing the word, adults shouldn't have to use the infantile phrase 'The N Word.'

But I'm not a brand selling down-home, folksy, 'Remember the good ol' Southern days' lifestyle. And that's the problem. This is not about free speech. It's about the free market. If you do something to damage your brand, or worse, another brand with which you're associated, then it's going to have profound repercussions. Personally, I think her brand should have been permanently damaged when she hid her diabetes diagnosis while still encouraging her fans to pour butter down their throats. That was a true revelation of character? This new PR nightmare? I wish I could say I was surprised.

I am starting to feel sorry for her. Had she said what she said in the "apology" on the stand, rather than trying to justify it, this wouldn't be much of an issue.

Tom, the line she is accused of saying is, “Well what I would really like is a bunch of little n***ers to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around. Now, that would be a true Southern wedding, wouldn’t it? But we can’t do that because the media would be on me about that.”
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

Now I want to see this picture.

I feel the same way about this as I do with Romney's "47 percent" comment.

If you don't want to get in trouble for something, then don't do it. She knows it's wrong to say, but she did it anyway.

The bigger part of this story is the lawsuit, which I don't think we've discussed. Her restaurants are not the only restaurants in GA. I find it odd that it took this Johnson woman (I think that's her name) working there five years to come forward with complaints. Why work at a place for that long if you don't like it?

That's just me though.

I get the whole thing about not wanting to use the expression "the n-word" in discussions, but - at least on Broadwayworld, where I have absolutely no idea who is and isn't making up the audience for the discussion - I still don't feel that great about throwing that word around. Like I said, when you're having a discussion face to face, it may be different, but even so (and this isn't pointed at anyone on here) I still think sometimes that argument is just a justification for people to say a word they know they really have no business using.

As for the monkey picture, I believe Diva had no ill intention with it. It still made me uncomfortable when I saw it, though, not simply because the history of equating African-Americans with monkeys, etc, but because the worst of the right wing nuts STILL do it. There was a picture I happened to see on Facebook just recently of Michelle Obama and one of her daughters recently that was compared to monkeys picking nits out of each other's fur.

I find it odd that it took this Johnson woman (I think that's her name) working there five years to come forward with complaints. Why work at a place for that long if you don't like it?

Back in the early '90s, I was the victim (sure, I'll use that word now) of sexual harassment in the workplace by a married man. The problem with situations like this is that they don't always advertise themselves with a neon sign. My first reaction was, "He's just joking," "He's one of those straight guys who thinks it's funny to 'pretend flirt' with other guys." He also wasn't very good at it. He was clumsy and direct, which made me laugh.

It was only after time went by, and he kept doing it that I realized something wasn't right. Maybe he wasn't kidding. Wait, was this all in my mind? Why would a straight, married guy at work flirt so openly with me?

The guy was a mess. A charming mess, though. I kept thinking, well, maybe it's flattering, I don't know.

Then two years go by, and suddenly nobody's laughing. He has a problem. Or is it me? Do I have a problem? Lots of psychological games go on.

And this is no joke, the day I was ready to report him with documented examples that I had started to keep in a journal, he was fired and escorted out of the office in front of me.

Apparently, I wasn't the only guy he was flirting with. He also showed up to work drunk a few times (I never noticed it, but others who worked in his department sure did).

So that thing, that little problem that was "just in my mind," turned into a very real, very serious emotional ordeal. I also didn't realize how much stress I was actually under because of it until it suddenly lifted the day he was fired. Then it hit me, and I was mad at myself for not doing something about it sooner. For giving him the benefit of the doubt for so long. But it didn't happen overnight. It never does. It's one "odd" or "off color" incident at a time, until finally you realize what's going on. Oh, by the way, you also worry that if you've put up with it before, why are you suddenly objecting to it? Are you a hypocrite? Did you suddenly change your standards? Maybe it's YOU with the problem. Lots of mind games go on.

Call it what you want. I showed that picture to three of my Black friends and they did not equate it with being an ugly baby. They equated it with a monkey baby. Like one said, " You call me a N, I call you a MF cracker. You call me a gorilla and those are fighting words" And my original point was if Paula Deen is a racist for using the N word several years ago, then that picture to those posters should be as equally offensive. Wasn't an attack on you, but an observation on the double standards of this board. But, with the exception of PRS, those who want to say the picture was something else, well so be it. And stating that I laughed at the picture and if someone else laughed at it, is my point that all of us have a little racism, bigotry and judgement inside us. Or maybe, I'm the only honest one to admit it.

Are you kidding me Robbie?? "Adults shouldn't have to use the infantile 'n--word'. Uh, yes they should. Esepcially is they are so ignorant to not understand the hate that word implies. Some words are just not aceptable in pur culture. Or shouldn't be. Perhaps you have become so desensitized by the crass, vulgar, hateful speech the Right wing spews under the guise of rebelling against political correctness. Or, you have just such a sadly narrow view of American and human history.

And, your argument is just so fraudulent. I'm sure you are comfortable with saying n**ger among your friends, but wouldn't on the train to 125th Street. Moron. Sad, smug, deluded moron.

Shame on any of you on this site who feels using such language casually, and who probably flp out tomorrow if DOMA is upheld tomorrow. Phony liberal hypocrites.

Best12bars. Shame on your for supporting such stupid statements by Robbie. You always seemed smarter.

I won't be returning to this thread. I'd rather watch silly gifs.
