Paula Deen Using N-Word and Making Racial Jokes During Deposition — Page 3

I think it's really bizarre that the media and people all over think she was fired for using the N-word. That's only part of it. This is a law suit deposition. It goes back a year, with all sorts of allegations about racial abuses and intolerances from both Deen and her brother in the workplace.

This isn't "someone who said the N-word once." This is a woman who thought it was a great idea to throw a party with the black waitstaff dressed as "house slaves."

It's a whole lot more than uttering the N-word once or twice on an off-day.

But that's sure what it sounds like in the media today. "Paula Deen fired for using the N-word."

A conservative "friend" was all over the "political correctness" that got Paula Deen "Fired" just for what she said. "I thought LIBRULS were supposed to be so TOLERANT!?"

I said it's about freedom- Paula Deen is free to hold any beliefs and say anything she pleases and Food Network is free to decide they don't want to be in business with her.

I find this Times Talk from 2012 to be even more nauseating than what she said in her deposition. At one point she laments the fate of her poor great grandfather who couldn't figure out how to run his plantation after his slaves were taken away.

This whole thing has been really upsetting to me for the past few days. I've loved her since before most people knew who she was and have such tremendous respect for what she's done and how she's done it. A friend of mine texted me this morning with a picture of her saying some nasty things followed by a lot of "LOL's" and he was really shocked that I asked him not to send me those kinds of things anymore, instead of just laughing with him.

I'll never condone racist behavior (contrary to what racist dipSH*Ts like Blactor say) but I will say (and I'll preface it by saying that this is not an excuse) that as someone who grew up in the south and still consider myself "a southerner", I understand that mentality with people her age. I understand it to the point where I can hear what she said and still know that in someone's mind and the way they were brought up in that area of the country, that there could be no ill will intended. I understand if that doesn't make a lot of sense and I've avoided posting in this thread because I didn't know if I can 100% get across what I'm trying to say without it sounding too defensive of her actions.

This whole thing has really just been upsetting to me. I have a framed picture of Miss Paula & Myself hanging up that I can see right now. That was one of the best days of my life getting to meet and talk with her. She was one of the most genuine and sweet people I'd ever met.

I'm very torn this week.

I think that guy who comes to her aid in the ham video is Hollis Johnson. The same guy she calls on stage in the Times Talk video I posted. The man she says the audience might not be able to see because he's as "dark as a board".

That is SO true. I am so tired of simple-minded drones--from across the political spectrum--declaring with great certainty "why" people acted as they did or said what they said in any situation. What seems like clear causality can tell only a fraction of the story--people's motives are far too complex to have simplistic motives applied to them in any useful way.

ON THE OTHER HAND, we--public figures in particular--must be prepared to stand by the surface meaning of the things we do and say.

We have, collectively, determined that racism is Bad. Paula Deen--about whom I have rarely heard anything but the most complimentary things, especially from people who actually know her--is smart enough to know that the 'N-word' is taboo, and she needs to accept the repercussions of her actions.

Sorry -- I'm 50, and 66 isn't all that old -- certainly not in this kind of debate. Even if "in her mind" is was just a way to SAY it, how does she not know NOT to say it.

And I agree this is WAAAY more than the use of the "n" word. That's the part that is troubling.

I grew up with a racist grandmother who at 85 was truly concerned that she may have gotten a blood transfusion from a shvartze (yiddish -- and I have no idea how to spell it). I was about 20 at the time and mortified. This was THIRTY years ago.
