Taz, I think it is possible to evolve and gain some positive movement forward, on the issue, without the lines intersecting. Granted, it would be a compromise. But surely it's a step forward?
I did hear this one story about the situation somehow being compared to our President evolving after 50 years, but not sure where it came from.

Headband, the president was against gay marriage his whole 50 year life. then earlier this year he evolved and said he was for it.
Now granted many people think its political and he is a phony. when he needed to get elected and thought it would help his career he was against it, now that hes been elected twice and his years of running for office are over he is for it. Id like to think he did evolve
I must say i am suprised you are not aware of this HEADBAND its not exactly a secret

"They don't believe in evolution."

But what everyone seems to keep ignoring in the hopes that this is some positive step forward, is that he was only talking about priests. Who have to remain celibate. I don't see how this will translate into some kind of doctrinal shift. The only difference is that, yes, compared to Ratzinger, he's a lot less hateful when it comes to gay priests.

And let us not forget about the continued abuse that is promoted within the religion... They just released details on child abuse in Los Angeles dating as far back as the 1950s.

Yeah, I hadn't seen that.
Isn't it astonishing to know that we're still uncovering the extent of this?

Taz,
I think the press has grabbed onto this because is seems somewhat 'positive' in their minds. It doesn't 'sound' as hateful as past popes. They aren't really looking at the statement for what it is, pointless.
But that doesn't make news.

You're welcome, Jordan.
Reg, it's obviously NOT surprising - we all know what goes on behind closed doors in the Catholic church. Not that the two are connected, per se, but maybe if the church actually tried to get control over its repeated sexual abuse (and the proliferation among upper level peeps), it would bring us closer to equality for all... including innocent children.
I doubt it, though.

all the most recent popes have stated that evolution happened. to be fair, most average ppl who criticize the catholic church espouse a watered down version of evolution ("evolution happened, but god set it in motion"--which is false).
obama was for gay marriage when he was a senator in illinois. he subsequently lied about his position after he became president because he feared persecution from the religious right. he only came out in support of gay marriage when it was politically expedient to do so.
and there's a very simple reason why there is no room for compromise between the LGBT and the catholic church. it is because the claims of religion are not testable. straights say god hates gays, gays say that god loves gays. there is no way to test either proposition. all that can be said is that the amount of evidence for either is the same: none. meanwhile, humanism can justify all gay rights on its own. this is the only life you get. you have every right to live it to the fullest in peace so long as you do no harm to another. what more is needed than that?
this is enshrined in the declaration of independence, which states that we are all created equal. which is to say, our intrinsic worth is the same, and it is UNAMERICAN to punish people for accident of birth.

I never have hope for the institution in Rome but I always hold out positive thoughts for the Jesuits because I have somehow managed to meet some cool Jesuits and ex-Jesuits in my life. But if this Jesuit Pope goes down the road a true Jesuit would go down, I figure they'll off him pronto like they did the radically liberal John Paul the First.

but this is the perpetual liberal fallacy. just because you know some nice jesuits, it doesn't make christianity true. the easiest way to demonstrate this is with mormonism. everyone here i bet has friends who are mormon. but just because you know some nice mormons, it doesn't mean that there was really a battle of comura in new york where the beautiful white folks defeated the black folks whose pigmentation was a curse from god. it's just a nasty fairy tale (thank goodness).
because some christians will take the bible to be true, homophobia will ALWAYS be latent within the religion itself, which is why any attempt for the LGBT community to reconcile with it is futile. the best modern society is going to do is encourage people to keep their religious beliefs limited to the private sphere as much as possible.

you just said that if the pope goes down the same road as a "true" jesuit, they would not let him be the pope.
who decides who is a "true" or "false" jesuit?

It sounds like youre judging people by their religion Namo, all while criticizing the Pope for judging. that just says it all.

Bethnor, your last question is very Jesuit.
Okay, so let's go back. I like that the Jesuits have historically asked difficult questions, that they eschew the pomp and circumstance. That they care about the poor. That they realize it's their job to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
I'm not saying that this "makes christianity true." Believe me, I know a lot of the tenets of a lot of religions (including Scientology!), and adherents of many (except Scientology!), it doesn't mean I believe their respective mythologies.
I do know that this new pope must be causing gray hairs in Rome. For logistical reasons like hopping out of the pope mobile and wading into the crowds in the poorest sections of Brazil, etc. I am not saying any of this stuff is remarkable in the real world, but since Jesuits LIKE to be thorns in the side of Rome, there's a part of all this that 1) makes me chuckle and 2) assume that if he goes too far he will meet the same fate as JPI. That is all.

it is a fact that no one has done more for the poor around the world then the Catholic Church. from Africa to South America.
even here in USA, the CC was one of the first and only organizations to care for AIDS patients, even before the USA Govt did

Catholic charities all over America are right now feeding millions of people. To meet such a demand, the Church runs more than 600,000 soup kitchens and stocks more than 2 million food banks and pantries. As for the homeless, the Church provides temporary shelter for children and families, battered women, senior citizens and others. At present, about 110,858 people depend on these shelters for help. The Church’s commitment to the poor also includes social programs to promote human development.

I'm confused as to your point here, Sue. Are you saying that because they do good, that they should be given a pass for doing things we consider bad? Like, I don't know, oppression of gays and women and protecting pedophiles at the expense of children come to mind.
Art has a double face, of expression and illusion.

I'm not a fan of any of the organized religions, Namo, but I have to agree that historically, the Jesuits have asked the difficult questions. Bless 'em, they rock the boat.

I was lucky enough to go to the best high school in the country, a Jesuit high school in Manhattan. The school was progressive and liberal. And my continuing interactions with Jesuits in the decades since have consistently shown them challenging traditional church doctrine and the status quo, and completely disregarding doctrine at times.
